Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They say the Bible is true, but does it ring true? Does it resonate? In this journey through the Gospel of Matthew, Matt Woodley considers the audacious idea of a God with us--confronting us in the midst of all we've invested ourselves in and dedicated ourselves to, and encouraging us with the promise that the God who made us has a better life in mind for us. The Resonate series recovers the ancient wisdom of Scripture for a complex world. The stories and insights of each book of the Bible are brought into conversation with contemporary voices of hope and lament--the cultural messages we interact with on a daily basis. The Scriptures become a meeting ground where God is confronted with the pressing concerns of our day, and we are confronted in turn with a fresh experience of God's truth.

Book excerpt: Contrary to the prevailing view that βασιλεία is a verbal noun signifying God’s rule, this study demonstrates how the term’s pragmatic range in Matthew’s Gospel covers both five distinct types of use and their integration into a coherent concept. The study, which is the first to examine all occurrences of βασιλεία in the First Gospel from the perspective of semantic monosemy, extends and enhances our appreciation of the Matthean Zentralbegriff, and engenders a more accurate apprehension of the nature and aims of the Matthean narrative and the theological views it conveys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Joshua Leim attempts to bring greater clarity to the articulation of Jesus' identity in Matthew by attending more precisely to two linguistic patterns woven deeply into the entire narrative's presentation of Jesus: Matthew's christological use of "worship/obeisance" language (proskyneo) and his paternal-filial idiom. Along with exploring the role these linguistic patterns play in the narrative, the author attempts to hear such language in relation to early Judaism and its articulation of the identity of the God of Israel. The study of these various elements yields the conclusion that the identity of God and Jesus Christ are inseparably related in Matthew's Gospel. Matthew articulates the identity of Israel's God around the Father-Son relation.

Book excerpt: With the existence of over two billion Christians throughout the world, there is much reverence for the Holy Bible, especially the four canonical gospels of the New Testament. There are standard interpretations many are familiar with. However, for those seeking greater meaning and deeper understanding, there are few, if any, sources of spiritual or esoteric interpretation in the public domain. This book is the first in a series meant to address that. The esoteric interpretation applied herein takes the literal into account and also perceives the deeper symbology within the texts which give them much more meaning. This provides the ability to go beyond an intellectual understanding of God and God's messages, and when interpreted this way, the Gospels contain important lessons that are especially relevant to our lives today. What makes this book unique is the application of the Tree of Life to the meaning and messages of the Gospel of Matthew. Trees are mentioned throughout the Bible, from the first chapter in Genesis to the last chapter in Revelation. That is how important this image is. The Tree of Life is a powerful archetype, brought forward through the ages, that is a symbolic representation of consciousness. Using the Tree to interpret the Gospel of Matthew, this book is about consciousness, and the ways in which we can rise to a whole new level of awareness.

This treatment combines linguistic insights with a detailed examination of Matthew's use of kai, de and similar conjunctions in narrative passages, culminating in a verse by verse commentary on the structure of Matthew's ;miracle chapters', Matthew 8-9. Black breaks new ground in linguistic theory by modelling the interplay between features such as sentence conjunction, word order, and verb tense in the portrayal of continuity and discontinuity in Greek narrative. A volume of interest to New Testament scholars, classicists, discourse analysts and linguists alike.

Book excerpt: This fresh look at the Gospel of Matthew highlights the unique contribution that Matthew's rich and multilayered portrait of Jesus makes to understanding the connection between the Old and New Testaments. Patrick Schreiner argues that Matthew obeyed the Great Commission by acting as scribe to his teacher Jesus in order to share Jesus's life and work with the world, thereby making disciples of future generations. The First Gospel presents Jesus's life as the fulfillment of the Old Testament story of Israel and shows how Jesus brings new life in the New Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Christian Church the Gospel of Matthew has been considered the most important portrait of Jesus' life and message. Containing Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and a uniquely rich collection of parables, among many other things, Matthew has made a major contribution to the church throughout the centuries, and it still has much to say to the church today. This superb commentary in the Pillar series explores the meaning and relevance of Matthew in an eminently straightforward fashion. Leon Morris writes for readers who use commentaries to discover further what the Bible means. Throughout, he makes clear what he considers to be the meaning of the Greek text that Matthew has bequeathed to the church. A perceptive introduction precedes Morris's warmhearted verse-by-verse exposition of Matthew, an exposition based on his own literal translation of the text. Now a standard reference work on the Gospel of Matthew, this mature, evangelically oriented commentary will continue to meet the needs of students, pastor, and general readers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of Matthew is pivotal in scholarly discussion on the hermeneutical use of the Old Testament in the New. In this publication Bitrus Sarma proposes that Matthew utilizes the Old Testament as a book of promise of God’s salvific plan and that Jesus is the fulfillment of that promise. For Matthew, God’s purpose to save fallen humanity is the grand narrative of the Bible. Using promise-fulfillment as the interpretative framework for mission theology, Sarma explores redemptive events and institutions, geography, prophetic ministry, and intertextual typology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of John’s relationship to the Synoptic Gospels is a perennial question. For centuries, the Gospel of Matthew has been considered the least likely of possible written sources of the Fourth Gospel. In an ambitious reappraisal, James Barker demonstrates John’s use of the redacted Gospel of Matthew. After reviewing the history of interpretation on the question, Barker develops three case studies. Concerning ecclesial authority, Barker contends that John’s saying concerning forgiving and retaining sins derives from Matthew’s binding and loosing logion. Regarding proof from prophecy, he argues that John relies on Matthew for Zechariah’s oracle about Israel’s king entering Jerusalem on a donkey. Finally, he argues that John’s inclusion of Samaritans contrasts sharply with Matthew’s exclusion of Samaritans from the early church. Although John’s engagement with Matthew was by no means uncritical, Barker at last concludes that John intended his Gospel to be read alongside, not instead of, Matthew.
