Book excerpt: Meet the members of the Smithson Group—five alpha males whose best work is done undercover. Unimaginably skilled, they’re the spies you want on your side…of the bed. Eli McKenzie’s tough exterior has been cracked. His latest mission had him in Mexico, deep inside a Spectra IT sex slavery ring gathering intel. Holding back when he wanted to blow the joint sky-high was bad enough, but turns out someone in the camp was poisoning him, too. The torture of being unable to act, along with the physical toll of his illness, sent him to Hank Smithson’s headquarters to put himself back together. Eli’s sudden departure caused trouble for a Texas PI, Stella Banks, whose movements put her on Spectra’s radar. Now Eli’s back in camp, just as Spectra’s henchmen are debating how best to do away with her. The only way to save her life is to get her to trust that he’s there to help. That means revealing his true identity. And Stella needs to trust him because without him, she has no way of freeing the girls Spectra is holding hostage. Watching Stella sacrifice to take care of the girls gets to Eli in a big way, and soon they find that spending time in each other’s arms is the only way to survive the brutal assignment. But survive they must if they expect to save the innocent young lives in their care. Besides, Eli is not about to let Spectra get away with what they’ve done to him, to the girls, or to the woman who’s salvaged his very broken heart.

This book was released on 2023-04-29 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Japanese diaspora from the historical archaeology perspective—drawing from archaeological data, archival research, and often oral history—and explores current trends in archaeological scholarship while also looking at new methodological and theoretical directions. The chapters include research on pre-War rural labor camps or villages in the US, as well as research on western Canada (British Columbia), Peru, and the Pacific Islands (Hawai‘i and Tinian), incorporating work on understudied urban and cemetery sites. One of the main themes explored in the book is patterns of cultural persistence and change, whether couched in terms of maintenance of tradition, “Americanization,” or the formation of dual identities. Other themes emerging from these chapters include consumption, agency, stylistic analysis, community lifecycles, social networks, diaspora and transnationalism, gender, and sexuality. Also included are discussions of trauma, racialization, displacement, labor, heritage, and community engagement. Some are presented as fully formed interpretive frameworks with substantial supporting data, while others are works in progress or tentative attempts to push the boundaries of our field into innovative new territory. This book is of interest to students and researchers in historical archaeology, anthropology, sociology of migration, diaspora studies and historiography. Previously published in International Journal of Historical Archaeology Volume 25, issue 3, September 2021

Book excerpt: Meet the members of the Smithson Group—five alpha males whose best work is done undercover. Unimaginably skilled, they’re the spies you want on your side…of the bed. Kelly John Beach takes the covert nature of his work to heart. He is never seen. He is never heard. Until he is. Somehow, the man who is the ultimate spy was caught on video surveillance inside a Spectra IT office. Now the SG-5 team has to replace the original capture with one proving K.J. was elsewhere at the time. Enter Emma Webster, Hank Smithson’s personal assistant. Posing as Kelly John’s lover, Emma will accompany him to several strategic locations with SG-5 cameras positioned to record their encounters: in elevators and restaurants and strictly off-limits back hallways. Intimate encounters. Erotic encounters. Getting his hands on the very woman who’s starred in his dirtiest fantasies would make this the best assignment ever for K.J. if not for the fact that it puts Emma in the crosshairs of Spectra IT. And when the criminal organization realizes they can get to K.J. through Emma, he’s left to face how far he’ll go to protect the woman he loves.

But it’s Glory Brighton, the owner of his favorite sandwich shop, who gets him hot and bothered. Their ongoing back-and-forth has been leading to a kiss to end all kisses in her supply room. And that’s where they are when all hell breaks loose. Glory’s history includes some men connected to Spectra IT. They’re convinced she’s hiding vital intel in her place. With the shop under siege, and the customers held at gunpoint, Tripp’s hand is forced. Breaking the Smithson Group’s rules, he reveals that he’s no simple engineer, but a hardcore covert operative, whose easy-going veneer is about to be stripped away.

Book excerpt: First in a series of archaeological mysteries featuring Faye Longchamp, who uncovers more than artifacts from the past. "A haunting, atmospheric story." —P.J. Parrish, New York Times bestselling author Faye Longchamp has lost nearly everything except her determination to hang onto Joyeuse, a moldering plantation hidden along the Florida coast. No one knows how Faye's great-great-grandmother Cally, a newly freed slave barely out of her teens, came to own Joyeuse in the aftermath of the Civil War or how her descendants hung onto it through Reconstruction, world wars, the Depression, and Jim Crow. But Faye has inherited the family tenacity. When the property taxes rise beyond her means, she sets out to save Joyeuse by digging for artifacts on her property and selling them on the black market. But instead of pot shards and arrowheads, she uncovers a woman's shattered skull. If Faye reports the 40-year-old murder, she'll reveal her illegal livelihood, risk jail...and Joyeuse. So she probes into the dead woman's history, unaware that the past is rushing toward her like a hurricane across deceptively calm Gulf waters.... Winner of the 2004 Benjamin Franklin award in Mystery/Suspense

The headstrong beauty knows she's falling in love, but is too proud to admit the truth until Quinn is ready to speak the words as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books do not just contain texts: books themselves are cultural artefacts, which convey many meanings in their own right, meanings which interact with the texts they contain. Awareness of the many significances of books as cultural and textual objects reshapes the traditional disciplines of textual theory, analytic bibliography, codicology and palaeography, while the advent of electronic books, and digital methods for representing print books, is introducing a new dimension to our understanding. Seven essays in this volume, ranging over medieval Portuguese and Swedish manuscripts, eighteenth-century Icelandic editions, Australian playtexts, Thackeray and Anita Brookner, and Stefan George, consider these questions from the broad perspective of textual scholarship. Texts may exist on the borderland of word and not-word; or they may spring from borderlands of nation or culture; or they may be considered from the margins of neighbouring disciplines. So readers must set the texts within contexts, to see the play of text against border. Essays in this volume explore different texts against varying backgrounds -- Pound's Cantos, Joyce's Ulysses, Trollope's An Eye for an Eye, Woolf's The Waves -- while essays by McGann and Lernout argue the dimensionality of text on the intersection of print and digital media. Implicit in all these essays is the contention, that textual scholarship must influence literary interpretation. Two final essays focus directly on this, in the cases of Melville's Moby-Dick and Emily Dickinson's late fragments. An extensive reviews section completes this volume.
