Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Matriculation Albums of the University of Glasgow: From 1728-1858 William Innes Addison was born in the parish Of Brechin in Forfarshire on 22nd March, 1857. Although he was the eldest son of the family, he did not take to his father's occupation of farming, for, after his school-days were over, led by some dim feeling or presentiment of what was needed for his future work, he became, at the age of fourteen, an articled apprentice to Messrs. Shiress Whitson, solicitors in Brechin, with whom he spent four years engaged in the usual routine Of elementary work in a law Office. The next four years saw him in Edinburgh, gaining fruitful experience in business and in the study of Law at the University. In July, 1875, he joined the staff in the office of Mr. A. Kirk Mackie, who was for many years Solicitor and Secretary to the Edinburgh Merchant Company, with its Schools and Colleges, and Legal Adviser with regard to the Company's Estates. During the first eighteen months he was employed in general work, including conveyancing, accounts and correspondence, and in preparing Abstracts of the Feu Rights contained in many volumes of Chartularies, extending over 150 years, and referring to feuing estates in at least five different counties in Scotland. He was afterwards appointed chief cashier, and in this capacity had from to per annum passing through his hands. This included the collection of the income of the Merchant Company and several of its endowed Schools and Colleges, and the payment of Salaries to Teachers, allowances to Foundationers, and annuities to Widows, besides large capital payments for loans, purchases of property, and banking transactions. In the stress Of these onerous duties he did not allow his attention to be absorbed by the details of business, but showed a desire to obtain a grasp of the principles of his profession. With this view, hard pressed though he was in his daily work, he found time for study, and attended the classes of Scots Law and Conveyancing, gaining Honours in the latter. In 1879 he removed to Glasgow and entered the chambers of Messrs. James Ritchie, Maclean Co. With this firm and their successors he remained eight years, with entire charge of the Cash and Book-keeping departments, besides taking a substantial share in strictly law business and in the administration of numerous and wealthy Trusts. In this period some matters of special interest fall to be noted, viz. (1) his attendance at Arts Classes (humanity, English Literature, and Moral Philosophy) between 1880 and 1884; (2) his admission as a Notary Public in 1881; and (3) his marriage in 1885. Book excerpt: Since it was first published in 1982 British Archives has established itself as the premier reference work to holdings of archives and manuscript collections throughout the UK. The 3rd edition has been extensively revised and enlarged with more than 150 new entries, further widening the range of the book. Entries are structured to show the archives of the organisation as distinct from deposited collections and significant non-manuscript material, and additional details of fax number and conservation provision are included for the first time. All the existing entries have been significantly updated, together with the select bibliography and list of useful addresses of various organisations involved in the care and custody of archives. The introduction provides an invaluable guide to researchers using archives, including a summary of the relevant legislation and a detailed description of the usual holdings of county and other local authority record offices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious undertaking is designed to acquaint students, teachers, and researchers with reference sources in any branch of English studies, which Marcuse defines as "all those subjects and lines of critical and scholarly inquiry presently pursued by members of university departments of English language and literature.'' Within each of 24 major sections, Marcuse lists and annotates bibliographies, guides, reviews of research, encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, and reference histories. The annotations and various indexes are models of clarity and usefulness, and cross references are liberally supplied where appropriate. Although cost-conscious librarians will probably consider the several other excellent literary bibliographies in print, such as James L. Harner's Literary Research Guide (Modern Language Assn. of America, 1989), larger academic libraries will want Marcuse's volume.-- Jack Bales, Mary Washington Coll. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study Professor Sheridan presents a rich and wide-ranging account of the health care of slaves in the British West Indies, from 1680-1834. He demonstrates that while Caribbean island settlements were viewed by mercantile statesmen and economists as ideal colonies, the physical and medical realities were very different. The study is based on wide research in archival materials in Great Britain, the West Indies and the United States. By steeping himself in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century sources, Professor Sheridan is able to recreate the milieu of a past era: he tells us what the slave doctors wrote and how they functioned, and he presents a storehouse of information on how and why the slaves sickened and died. By bringing together these diverse medical demographic and economic sources, Professor Sheridan casts new light on the history of slavery in the Americas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adventuring in Dictionaries: New Studies in the History of Lexicography brings together seventeen papers on the making of dictionaries from the sixteenth century to the present day. The first five treat English and French lexicography in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Heberto Fernandez and Monique Cormier discuss the outside matter of French–English bilingual dictionaries; Kusujiro Miyoshi re-assesses the influence of Robert Cawdrey; John Considine uncovers the biography of Henry Cockeram; Antonella Amatuzzi discusses Pierre Borel’s use of his predecessors; and Fredric Dolezal investigates multi-word units in the dictionary of John Wilkins and William Lloyd. Linda Mitchell’s account of dictionaries as behaviour guides in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries leads on to Giovanni Iamartino’s presentation of words associated with women in the dictionary of Samuel Johnson, and Thora Van Male’s of the ornaments in the Encyclopédie. Nineteenth-century and subsequent topics are treated by Anatoly Liberman on the growth of the English etymological dictionary; Julie Coleman on dictionaries of rhyming slang; Laura Pinnavaia on Richardson’s New Dictionary and the changing vocabulary of English; Peter Gilliver on early editorial decisions and reconsiderations in the making of the Oxford English Dictionary; Anne Dykstra on the use of Latin as the metalanguage in Joost Halbertsma’s Lexicon Frisicum; Laura Santone on the “Dictionnaire critique” serialized in Georges Bataille’s Surrealist review Documents; Sylvia Brown on the stories of missionary lexicography behind the Eskimo–English Dictionary of 1925; and Michael Adams on the legacies of the Early Modern English Dictionary project. The diverse critical perspectives of the leading lexicographers and historians of lexicography who contribute to this volume are united by a shared interest in the close reading of dictionaries, and a shared concern with the making and reading of dictionaries as human activities, which cannot be understood without attention to the lives of the people who undertook them.
