Book excerpt: Jalaloddin Rumi's Masnavi-ye Ma'navi, or 'Spiritual Couplets', composed in the 13th Century, is a monumental work of poetry in the Sufi tradition of Islamic mysticism. For centuries before his love poetry became a literary phenomenon in the West, Rumi's Masnavi had been revered in the Islamic world as its greatest mystical text. Drawing upon a vast array of characters, stories and fables, and deeply versed in spiritual teaching, it takes us on a profound and playful journey of discovery along the path of divine love, toward its ultimate goal of union with the source of all Truth. In Book Two of the Masnavi, the second of six volumes, we travel with Rumi toward an understanding of the deeper truth and reality, beyond the limits of the self. Alan Williams's authoritative new translation is rendered in highly readable blank verse and includes the original Persian text for reference. True to the spirit of Rumi's poem, this new translation establishes the Masnavi as one of the world's great literary achievements for a global readership. Translated with an introduction, notes and analysis by Alan Williams and including the Persian text edited by Mohammad Este'lami.

Book excerpt: Rumi is perhaps the only example in world literature of a devoted prose writer who suddenly burst forth into poetry during middle age to become a truly great mystical poet for all time. This book, a long-overdue reckoning of his life and work, begins with a description and examination of the living conditions in 13th-century Persia. Building on this context, Afzal Iqbal proceeds to fully analyze the formative period of Rumi's life leading up to 1261--when he began the monumental work of writing the Mathnawi. Toward the end of the book, Iqbal more generally investigates Rumi's thought and includes translations of those portions of the Mathnawi that have been hitherto unavailable in English. Combining an unparalleled familiarity with the source material, a total and critical understanding of the subject, and a powerful and readable prose style, this is an extraordinary study of a truly remarkable poet and mystic.

Book Synopsis The Masnavi. Book Four by : Jalal al-Din Rumi
Download or read book The Masnavi. Book Four written by Jalal al-Din Rumi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Joking is teaching, so take care to listen - Don't look at just the joke's form of expression. To jesters every serious thing's hilarious, While to the wise hilarious jokes are serious' Rumi is the greatest mystic poet to have written in Persian, and the Masnavi is his masterpiece. Divided into six books and consisting of some 26,000 verses, the poem was designed to convey a message of divine love and unity to the disciples of Rumi's Sufi order, known today as the Whirling Dervishes. Like the earlier books, Book Four interweaves amusing stories with homilies to instruct pupils in understanding of God's meaning. It has a special focus on the mystical knowledge of the spiritual guide, elaborated through stories such as Solomon's freeiration to the Queen of Sheba, and animal fables. This is the first ever verse translation of Book Four of the Masnavi. It follows the original by presenting Rumi's most mature mystical teachings in simple and attractive rhyming couplets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never in the history of mankind have nations and peoples been so close and yet so far apart. In the age of globalization and digital social media that connect us all, why are nations and races and religions still in conflict? Just fifty miles separate Alaska from Eastern Russia, and yet these great countries are clearly separated by the rift of a cold war. Muslims are slaughtering each other in Syria. Terrorist Shiites that belong to Hezbollah are leaving a tragic scar on the people of Lebanon, a country that has always been a melting pot of different cultures and a beacon of freedom of expression and religious practice. Islamic fundamentalism still cripples many countries, and Africa is mostly a mess, despite its enormous natural resources. Corruption and greed are wreaking havoc on the planet, and the terrible consequences of the stress we are placing on the environment and on wild animals are starting to become undeniably evident. Earth cannot support the exploding human population, yet the global population keeps growing. Relationships between men and women are breaking down, and divorce is at its highest rate ever. What is the common denominator in all this chaos? What is the reason for all this suffering? The answer might be spiritual ignorance. But there’s an antidote to this decadence, and it’s called Rumi. Once you taste Rumi’s passion, you will become a transformed human being, and your soul will be on fire. Rumi’s poetry tries to capture the sweetness and the joy of knowing God, or Allah, or the Truth, or the Infinite Energy. It tries to define and explain the mystery that Life is. And the fire of the Truth burns down all the petty barriers between human beings and their false constructs and idols of pleasure and prestige. Suffering ends when enlightenment begins.
