Book Synopsis Martin P4M-1/1Q Mercator by : Steve Ginter
Download or read book Martin P4M-1/1Q Mercator written by Steve Ginter and published by Ginter Books. This book was released on 1996-12-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to delineate the history of the Martin P4M Mercator. It is not by any means a complete narrative, due to the secret nature of the Mercator's career and its importance to the Cold War. Through mishaps and shoot-downs, the nineteen ship production run flew clandestine electronic intelligence missions against China, North Korea, Russia, and Vietnam until 1960. Many of the documents, drawings and photos used in this book were declassified for this publication as late as 6-17-96. Even so, I trust that all that acquires this book will thrill at the beauty and gracefulness of the big Martin.

In January 1945, the proposal was amended to include anti-shipping, anti-submarine, and air-search and rescue. Ultimately, the project was cancelled when the submitted designs were deemed marginally superior to existing aircraft. Book Synopsis Flying Boats & Seaplanes by : Stéphane Nicolaou
Download or read book Flying Boats & Seaplanes written by Stéphane Nicolaou and published by Zenith Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with races that were staged at elegant French resorts in the early part of the century, flying boats and seaplanes have played an integral part in aviation history. World War I spurred the development of these machines, and by the 1930s, flying boats and seaplanes had become pioneers in transcontinental flight. This photo-filled history recalls the role of flying boats and seaplanes in civil and military aviation history, and the enthusiasm of the engineers and pilots who are associated with their development. In addition to the golden years of hydraviation prior to World War II, author Nicolaou examines the decline of the seaplane, and its subsequent renaissance in nations that are today considered seaplane paradises. The saga is illustrated by more than 200 rare photographs uncovered in archives around the globe.

Book Synopsis Consolidated PB2Y Coronado by : Richard Hoffman
Download or read book Consolidated PB2Y Coronado written by Richard Hoffman and published by Naval Fighters. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PB2Y Coronado was a large flying boat patrol bomber designed by Consolidated Aircraft. After deliveries of the PBY Catalina, also a Consolidated aircraft, began in 1935, the United States Navy began planning for the next generation of patrol bombers. Orders for two prototypes, the XPB2Y-1 and the Sikorsky XPBS-1, were placed in 1936; the prototype Coronado first flew in December 1937. After trials with the XPB2Y-1 prototype revealed some stability issues, the design was finalized as the PB2Y-2, with a large cantilever wing, twin tail, and four Pratt & Whitney R-1830 radial engines. The two inner engines were fitted with four-bladed reversible pitch propellers; the outer engines had standard three-bladed feathering props. Like the PBY Catalina before it, the PB2Y's wingtip floats retracted to reduce drag and increase range.
