Book excerpt: For both ancient Egypt and Iran, as a cultural feature, incestuous relationships are usually dismissed on the grounds that they are only found as the exception, being allowed for royalty as representatives for the divine on earth, or that the evidence for such relationships are unreliable. Neither view, from the perspective of this study, is tenable. This work examines the evidence for marriage and sexual relations between siblings, and between a parent and child, in ancient Egypt and pre-Islamic Iran. The book restricts its examination to incestuous relationships between members of non-royal nuclear families and puts forth arguments against the generally held axiom that the prohibition of incest is a universal phenomenon.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marriage of Near Kin: Considered With Respect to the Law of Nations, the Results of Experience, and the Teachings of Biology 0f the many shortcomings of the work the author is fully aware; but he does not pretend to have attempted exhaustive inquiry, for which, in the present state of our knowledge, a lifetime would be too short. He will be satis fed if he has only succeeded in showing how rotten is the foundation of what many people accept as demonstrated truths, leaving to others the task of building a worthier edifice. For every statement the author has given a refer ence to his authority, which with the index to Authors quoted is amply suficient for verification he hopes, therefore, that if his work does not help to decide the question as to the advisability of marriage between near hin, it will at least serve as a hand-book to the literature of the subject, and prevent certain authors from assuming as demonstrated, a question whose investigation is as yet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marriage of Near Kin: Considered With Respect to the Laws of Nations, the Results of Biology Though many writers have treated on the subject of consanguineous marriage, from many points of view, no one has hitherto come forward with a generalization of their work, which lies scattered and buried in a mass of pamphlets and periodical literature, difficult to hear of, difficult to find, and requiring considerable time and thought to digest. The consequence has been that people have been unable to judge of the relative value of the various observations they may read or make, and from a want of the necessary perspective are liable to draw wholly wrong and sometimes ridiculous conclusions. In this work the author has endeavoured to gather together everything of importance that has been written upon the subject; to arrange and classify it, to weigh the evidence on either side, to reject what is worthless, and point out the value of what remains. In this investigation he has attempted to divest himself of all prejudice, whether of tradition or custom, which might tend to warp his judgment, and has, therefore, often found himself obliged to treat as debatable, assumptions which inveterate association has rightly made shameful to doubt, but which, undisturbed, would make the discovery of truth impossible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Marriage of First Cousins The question of kinship in marriage, within what degrees it should be permitted, and whether near of kin should be allowed and even encouraged to marry has attracted attention and provoked discussion from very early times. Reasoned Objection to marriages Of near kin on the grounds Of harm to the Offspring, however, seems to be Of relatively late growth. Plato, in the Laws, says that the reason why such marriages are forbidden (he is re ferring to the marriage Of brother and sister) is simply habit and custom, as were such marriages allowed people would marry those most like themselves, which would prevent the proper mixture of character and property. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Right Spouse is an engaging investigation into Tamil (South Indian) preferential close kin marriages, so-called Dravidian Kinship. This book offers a description and an interpretation of preferential marriages with close kin in South India, as they used to be arranged and experienced in the recent past and as they are increasingly discontinued in the present. Clark-Decès presents readers with a focused anthropology of this waning marriage system: its past, present, and dwindling future. The book takes on the main pillars of Tamil social organization, considers the ways in which Tamil intermarriage establishes kinship and social rank, and argues that past scholars have improperly defined "Dravidian" kinship. Within her critique of past scholarship, Clark-Decès recasts a powerful and vivid image of preferential marriage in Tamil Nadu and how those preferences and marital rules play out in lived reality. What Clark-Decès discovers in her fieldwork are endogamous patterns and familial connections that sometimes result in flawed relationships, contradictory statuses, and confused roles. The book includes a fascinating narration of the complex terrain that Tamil youth currently navigate as they experience the complexities and changing nature of marriage practices and seek to reconcile their established kinship networks to more individually driven marriages and careers.
