Book excerpt: A person wants to believe that a moral, upright, respected family will remain that way forever, but this story shows the dark side after the death of a beloved mother. It's the love of the mother that holds most families together. What happens to her precious children when she dies suddenly and suspiciously? The next in line to lead the family will be her oldest son, but he may not be the best choice, even though in the past he has been her sweetest angel. He may have changed into a fallen angel, which she suspected, but she refused to believe it. The new leader of the family won't necessarily be accepted, until he proves himself worthy. In fact, her angel may have changed into someone she wouldn't recognize. He may betray all of her trust, and his moral decline would make her roll over in her grave. Her angel may also drag down her other children with him. So, the tragedy is doubled.

Book excerpt: A love letter to Paris and a meditation on how it has changed in two decades, evolving from the twentieth century into the twenty-first, from analog to digital. Your telephone is precious. It may be envied. We recommend vigilance when using it in public. --Paris bus public notice In fall 2014 Lauren Elkin began keeping a diary of her bus commutes in the Notes app on her iPhone 5c, writing down the interesting things and people she saw in a Perecquian homage to Bus Lines 91 and 92, which she took from her apartment in the 5th Arrondissement to her teaching job in the 7th. Reading the notice, she decided to be vigilant when using her phone: she would carry out a public transport vigil, using it to take in the world around her and notice all the things she would miss if she continued using it the way she had been, the way everyone does--to surf the web, check social media, maintain her daily sense of self through digital interaction. Her goal became to observe the world through the screen of her phone, rather than using her phone to distract from the world. During the course of that academic year, the Charlie Hebdo attacks occurred and Elkin had an ectopic pregnancy, requiring emergency surgery. At that point, her diary of dailiness became a study of the counterpoint between the everyday and the Event, mediated through early twenty-first century technology, and observed from the height of a bus seat. No. 91/92 is a love letter to Paris, and a meditation on how it has changed in the two decades the author has lived there, evolving from the twentieth century into the twenty-first, from analog to digital.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of the marriage equality debate in the United States, praised by Library Journal as "beautifully and accessibly written. . . . An essential work.” As a legal scholar who first argued in the early 1990s for a right to gay marriage, William N. Eskridge Jr. has been on the front lines of the debate over same‑sex marriage for decades. In this book, Eskridge and his coauthor, Christopher R. Riano, offer a panoramic and definitive history of America’s marriage equality debate. The authors explore the deeply religious, rabidly political, frequently administrative, and pervasively constitutional features of the debate and consider all angles of its dramatic history. While giving a full account of the legal and political issues, the authors never lose sight of the personal stories of the people involved, or of the central place the right to marry holds in a person’s ability to enjoy the dignity of full citizenship. This is not a triumphalist or one‑sided book but a thoughtful history of how the nation wrestled with an important question of moral and legal equality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to polls, from the early noughties to now, public support for same-sex marriage has increased dramatically. Same-Sex Marriage and Social Media asks how such a rate of attitude change came about and, more specifically, what role social media played. Digital platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have proved to be useful outlets for political expression, and Rhonda Gibson explores how this came to benefit the marriage equality movement. Drawing on a wealth of movement-related discourse, the book looks at: how marriage equality was framed by news companies online and in print; the digital strategies deployed by LGBT+ rights organizations and their opponents to gain support; the corporate response to the same-sex marriage debate; the effect of perceived public opinion and the concept of social identity on how the debate evolved online. This book seeks to demonstrate how the unique ability of social networks to share personal stories on a mass scale, connect like-minded individuals regardless of geography, and leverage the bandwagon effect of viral content contributed to a seismic shift in visibility and public opinion around the issue of marriage equality. Students and researchers will find this a timely and accessible introduction to the impact of online networks on LGBTQ rights.

As their love crumbles, Zaidou’s path crosses with that of Zakiyyah, the thirty-year-old daughter of a wealthy and powerful diplomat. Zakiyyah has just returned to their West African country, Hasoumiya, after spending her life abroad and studying at a university in the Netherlands. Zakiyyah recognizes Zaidou’s talents as a tailor and helps him to export his unique fashions beyond Masara to Europe. In return, she asks him to teach her how to sew. Zaidou’s wealth and position increase with the increased demand for his garments, and his relationship with Zakiyyah waxes stronger. He proposes marriage to her and envisages a happy life with her, only to have his dreams dashed by the imposition of a five-year ban on all marriages by his country’s brutal dictator. Failure to adhere to the ban risks imprisonment and even execution, so Zaidou and Zakiyyah make plans to leave Hasoumiya and go into exile in Nigeria to marry. However, before they can flee, Zaidou is imprisoned on a false allegation that he attempted to assassinate a powerful politician. After spending two years in prison, Zaidou is released. He finds his country engulfed in an insurgency that aims to end the marriage ban. He also learns that Zakiyyah has been snatched by the dictator. He joins the insurgency in the hope of winning back his heartthrob. In this thrilling novel of action, intrigue and mystery, a young man searches for love in a country riddled with tyranny and insurgency.
