Book excerpt: Excalibur has been discovered in the hands of a deadly terrorist organization, the Souls of Death. Recovered by Lincoln Thaw and his best friend, Thomas, who almost killed the organization's leader in the process, the legendary sword falls under close scrutiny, and an incredible discovery is unearthed: a gateway to a new plane of existence containing multiple, concurrent realities. When Raheem, the heir apparent of the Souls of Death, infiltrates the lab, he also finds more than he expected in an encounter with the goddess of life, known only as "the Aura." Given the ability to teleport, Raheem begins killing at random, and the president calls upon Lincoln Thaw to combat this enraged foe. With the help of an elusive scientist, Lincoln undertakes a supernatural battle for victory-in which wills will be tested and fears will be confronted in a clash of technology versus divinity.

Book excerpt: Two short novels from a master of hard-boiled storytelling Simon Crane is an ex-cop with a bad leg, a small pension, and a former lover, Joanne, who works for Sal Aiello, undisputed crime boss of a dusty southwestern city. When Aiello and his millions disappear, the city’s underworld whips into a frenzy that could get Joanne killed. To save her life, Crane must find the dead mobster’s cash before anyone else does. Somebody put a hit out on Aiello, and if Crane can’t find out who, he will be taking the bullet himself. In this special edition ebook, The Hit is paired with The Marksman, a tense novella about a combat veteran caught up in criminal dealings far more violent than anything he saw in the Middle East. Garfield’s prose is spare and his storytelling is electric from page one. Both novellas overflow with grim, relentless action.

Book excerpt: Cigar Box Lithographs Vol. 5 is a collection of stories from Canada’s past, which the author tells past using century-old cigar box lithographs as his guideposts. His collection of books, of which this is fifth in a series, pay homage to the heritage and culture of this country that have been largely neglected in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven society. Similar to its precursors, in Volume V readers are once again treated to Humber’s chatty, erudite writing style; reading it no doubt makes Cigar Box Lithographs fans feel like they’re sitting down with a treasured friend enjoying a long and fascinating conversation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War wounds the soul. It is not only the violence that warfighters suffer against them that harms, but also the violence that they do. These soul wounds have come to be known as moral injuries: psychic traumas that occur from having done or condoned that which goes against deeply held moral principles. It is not surprising that the committing of atrocities or the accidental killing of the innocent would hurt the soul of warfighters. The problem is that many warfighters at least tacitly follow the commonplace belief that killing another human being is always wrong--it's just that sometimes, as in war, it is necessary. This paradoxical commitment makes the very business of warfighting morally injurious. This problem is also a crisis. Clinical research among combat veterans has established a link between killing in combat and moral injury and between moral injury and suicide. Our warfighters, even those who have served honorably and with the right intentions, are dying by their own hands at devastating rates--casualties not of the physical threats of war, but of the moral ones. It does not have to be this way. The just war tradition, a moral framework for thinking about war that flows out of our Greco-Roman and Hebraic intellectual traditions, is grounded in the basic truth that killing comes in different kinds. While some kinds of killing, like murder, are always wrong, there are other kinds of killing that are morally neutral, such as unavoidable accidents, and still other kinds that are morally permitted--even, sometimes, obligatory. The Good Kill embraces this tradition to argue for the morality of killing in justified wars. Marc LiVecche does not deny the morally bruising realities of combat, but offers potential remedies to help our warfighters manage the bruising without becoming irreparably morally injured.
