Book excerpt: Codex Sinaiticus is one of the world's most remarkable books. Written in Greek in the fourth century, it is the oldest surviving complete New Testament, and one of the two oldest manuscripts of the whole Bible. No other early manuscript of the Christian Bible has been so extensively corrected, and the significance of Codex Sinaiticus for the reconstruction of the Christian Bible's original text, the history of the Bible and the history of western book making is immense. Since 2002, a major international project has been creating an electronic version of the manuscript. This magnificent printed facsimile reunites the text, now divided between the British Library, the National Library of Russia, St Catherine's Monastery, Mt Sinai and Leipzig University Library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "But the Bible says" is a common enough refrain in many conversations about Christianity. The written verses of the four canonical Gospels are sometimes volleyed back and forth and taken as fact while the apocryphal and oral accounts of the life of Jesus are taken as mere oddities. Early thinkers inside and outside the community of Jesus-followers similarly described a contentious relationship between the oral and the written, though they often focused on the challenges of trusting the written word over the spoken-Socrates described the written word an illegitimate "bastard" compared to the spoken word of a teacher. Nevertheless, the written accounts of the Jesus tradition in the Gospels have taken a far superior position in the Christian faith to any oral tradition. In The Gospel as Manuscript, Chris Keith offers a new material history of the Jesus tradition's journey from voice to page, showing that the introduction of manuscripts played an underappreciated, but crucial, role in the reception history of the gospel. From the textualization of Mark in the first century CE until the eventual usage of liturgical readings as a marker of authoritative status in the second and third centuries, early followers of Jesus placed the gospel-as-manuscript on display by drawing attention to the written nature of their tradition. Many authors of Gospels saw themselves in competition with other evangelists, working to establish their texts as the quintessential Gospel. Reading the texts aloud in liturgical settings and further establishedthe literary tradition in material culture. Revealing a vibrant period of competitive development of the Jesus tradition, wherein the material status of the tradition frequently played as important a role as the ideas that it contained, Keith offers a thorough consideratios of the competitive textualization and public reading of the Gospels.

Book excerpt: All men were born pure but it is the laws and concepts that they are made to live by that make them vile. The book Blind Vision discusses the relationship that exists between religion, society and the state. It analyses the common beliefs, concepts and the laws that govern and shape societal and individual ideas; it looks into why people have varying widespread beliefs and how these beliefs affect them in the short and long run. With so much uncertainty about the origin of the Bible and its authenticity in our present day, it is difficult for some people to give Biblical perspectives any recognition. Blind Vision intends to restore the Bible's credit. It discusses the points to be taken into consideration when studying the Bible. The origin of the confusion and the glitches in various translations are also pointed out. Scientists teach evolution in schools and sometimes, both the scientists and their students go to school and church. The controversy resulting from the contradictory ideas between science and the Bible gives inquisitive members of society a latent chaotic mind. Without adequate answers provided, inquiring individuals exist in a state of order in disorder. In the confusion, they come up with, or accept concepts predominantly based on their logical thought and what they can prove. With respect to the fact that the world is made up of numerous communities, each having either similar or different beliefs about life and the supernatural forces of nature, an analysis is made on some of the common claims. There are an uncountable number of theories about the beginning of life on earth, the origin of the world, man, the law of God and those of man. Blind Vision scrutinizes these speculations explaining why they should or should not be given any credit. The similarities between the account of the creation as written in the Bible and those postulated by the discoveries of scientists are evaluated, and a conclusion is drawn indicating the most realistic perspective. This is strictly the Biblical and scientific perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cross-cultural, comparative view on the transition from a predominant 'culture of handwriting' to a predominant 'culture of print' in the late medieval and early modern periods is provided here, combining research on Christian and Jewish European book culture with findings on East Asian manuscript and print culture. This approach highlights interactions and interdependencies instead of retracing a linear process from the manuscript book to its printed successor. While each chapter is written as a disciplinary study focused on one specific case from the respective field, the volume as a whole allows for transcultural perspectives. It thereby not only focusses on change, but also on simultaneities of manuscript and printing practices as well as on shifts in the perception of media, writing surfaces, and materials: Which values did writers, printers, and readers attribute to the handwritten and printed materials? For which types of texts was handwriting preferred or perceived as suitable? How and under which circumstances could handwritten and printed texts coexist, even within the same document, and which epistemic dynamics emerged from such textual assemblages?
