Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manners of the Aristocracy The hostess receives among her morning letters one 'that fills her with apprehension about an absent son or daughter: a sudden illness, perhaps, or a serious accident. The guests meet, unknow ing, at the breakfast-table. Will she put them in the disagreeable position of offering her their con soling platitudes -for what else can they do under the circumstances No, she plays the hypocrite; makes her morning greetings as usual, is as care fully attentive to each guest as she was yesterday morning; and only she herself knows what the effort costs her. If she finds herself unable for it, she deputes some one to fill her place; but she is far too well bred to cause discomfort to her guests, even though her own sufferings exceed a thousand times aught that so mild a term may convey. When the Roman Empire sank to the depths before the deluge of Christianity, it was not long ere what was left of the firm Roman rocks was swept away in the dun floods. When the German Revolution, euphemistically baptized the Reformation, gave the Renascence of Italy its death-blow, not one man arose capable of stemming the unlocked waters. It was only at the third and last plague of this description, namely, the breaking of the French Revolution over Europe, that Nature was kind, and created - after the manner of some of her bacilli - the remedy to counter the disease, a Napoleon to baffle anarchy. Again, the Borneos have no proper names; individuals are called after their height, thickness, or other acci dental quality, and have nicknames merely. But the salt, the dates, the ivory', and the gold, for which these horrible regions are Visited, find their way into countries where the purchaser and con sumer can hardly be ranked in one race with these cannibals and man-stealers countries where man serves himself with metals, wood, stone, glass, gum, cotton, silk, and wool; honors himself with architecture; writes laws, and contrives to exe cute his will through the hands of many nations; and, especially, establishes a select society, run ning through all the countries of intelligent men, a self-constituted aristocracy, or fraternity of the best, which, without written law or exact usage of any kind, perpetuates itself, colonizes every new planted island, and adopts and makes its own Whatever personal beauty or extraordinary native endowment anywhere appears. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Good Manners: Etiquette for All Occasions An American traveller, when once rallied upon the fact that there was no aristocracy in his country, replied: "Pardon me, you forget our women!" It was gallantly said, and characteristic of the chivalry that has always been so marked a trait of American manhood. It is the stock reproach among Europeans towards us - this lack of aristocracy - which politely but thinly veils their conviction that we are a nation of rich and prosperous parvenus. We resent the reflection because it seems to imply the lack of qualities which, to our minds, the word stands for. Now we believe the outward and visible signs of aristocracy are shown in perfect breeding, charm of manner, and unfailing courtesy, of which the inward grace is an instinctive refinement that is not merely a decorative attribute. True aristocracy derives nothing from the possession of money - wealth but makes ill-breeding more conspicuous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristocracy: A Novel While she thus sits let us have a look at her and see what she is like. Fat, red-faced, and waddling - that doom of nine tenths of British highborn matronhood, the other tenth being thin, bony, and pinched - she yet shows in her arched eyebrows, thin nostrils, short, curled upper lip, white, smooth forehead, small ears, and delicately poised head on a neck which refuses to grow short and fat with the rest of her body, those indices of noble birth which are supposed to belong exclusively and of natural right to the nobility, but which as a matter of obstinate fact are found quite as often, if not indeed oftener, among the so-called middle classes. Did you have a real, personal knowledge of all classes in England you would say she had the body of a peeress and the face and head of a had-been pretty woman of no class in particular. Did you depend upon Bulwer Lytton, Disraeli, Oui da, The Duchess, and Miss Braddon for the formation of your ideal you would think her face a model of British high-born femininity, while her body you would regard as a painful exception to the gen eral rule. However, though she may not satisfactorily look it, the Marchioness of Oaktorrington is a repre sentative of the English aristocracy, and a pretty fair one at that. Not only is she the wife of the Marquis of Oaktorrington (which any costermonger's daughter might be), and therefore an aristocrat by marriage and position; but she is the daughter of the Duke of Tallyforward, * one of England's most ancient ducts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Renaissance Courtesy-Book: Galateo of Manners Behaviours One day, in Rome, about the middle of the sixteenth century, the Bishop of Sessa suggested to the Archbishop of Benevento that he write a treatise on good manners. Many books had touched the subject on one or more of its sides, but no single book had attempted to formulate the whole code of refined conduct for their time and indeed for all time. And who could deal with the subject more exquisitely than the Archbishop of Benevento? As a scion of two distinguished Florentine families (his mother was a Tornabuoni), as an eminent prelate and diplomatist, an accomplished poet and orator, a master of Tuscan prose, a frequenter of all the fashionable circles of his day, the author of licentious capitoli, and more especially as one whose morals were distinctly not above reproach, he seemed eminently fitted for the office of arbiter elegantiarum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. You can never be rude if you bear the rule always in mind, for what lady likes to be treated rudely? True Christian politeness will always be the result of an unselfish regard for the feelings of others, and though you may err in the ceremonious points of etiquette, you will never be im polite. Politeness, founded upon such a rule, becomes the expression, in graceful manner, of social virtues. The spirit of politeness consists in a certain attention to forms and ceremonies, which are meant both to please others and ourselves, and to make others pleased with us ;a still clearer definition may be given by saying that politeness is goodness of heart put into daily practice; the.re can be no true, politeness without kindness, purity, singleness of heart, and sensibility. Many believe that politeness is but a mask worn in the world to conceal bad passions and impulses, and to make a show of possessing virtues not really existing in the heart; thus, that politeness is merely hypocrisy and dissimulation. Do not believe this; be certain that those who profess such a doctrine are practising themselves the deceit they condemn so much.
