Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rigorous survey offers a comprehensive rethinking of the assessment and treatment of sexual offenders for a bold challenge to practitioners. It critiques what we understand about offenders and the mechanisms of offending behaviors, and examines how this knowledge can best be used to reduce offending and relapses. To this end, experts weigh the efficacy of common assessment methods and interventions, the value of prevention programs, and the validity of the DSM’s classifications of paraphilias. This strengths/weaknesses approach gives professional readers a guide to the current state as well as the future of research, practice, and policy affecting this complex and controversial field. Included in the coverage: Strengths of actuarial risk assessment. Risk formulation: the new frontier in risk assessment and management. Dynamic risk factors and offender rehabilitation: a comparison of the Good Lives Model and the Risk-Need-Responsivity Model. The best intentions: flaws in sexually violent predator laws. Desistance from crime: toward an integrated conceptualization for intervention. From a victim/offender duality to a public health perspective. A call to clear thought and accurate action, Treatment of Sex Offenders will generate discussion and interest among forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and social workers.

Book excerpt: Over the past several decades the seeming escalation of crimes involving sexually deviant, coercive, and aggressive behavior has become an increasingly serious problem, manifested in costs to both victims and society at large. The long-term psychological impact of sexual assault on adult and child victims has been documented numerous times. The costs incurred by society include a network of medical and psychological services provided to aid victim recovery, the investigation, trial, and incarceration of offenders-often in segregated units or special facilities-and the invisible but tangible blanket of fear that forces potential victims to schedule normal daily activities around issues of safety. Despite the gravity of the problem, there has been a paucity of empirical research directed at the etiology, course, remediation, and management of sexually deviant and coercive behavior. In treating these disorders and in making crucial decisions about how to manage these offenders, clinicians have been forced to rely on their personal experience. Such experience by its nature is unsystematic and lacks the validation that empirical research provides. The lack of sound empirical data addressing the problem is certainly noteworthy, though not surprising. The paucity of research in this area may well be attributable to historical scientific timidity about most aspects of sexual behavior. In 1922 Dr. Robert L.

Book excerpt: Examine the major advances in sexual offender treatment over the last decade and promising new concepts in treatment, supervision, and research Sex Offender Treatment: Accomplishments, Challenges, and Future Directions points the way toward humane, dignified, effective treatment regimes for sexual offenders. In addition to providing an essential overview of the current state of sex offender treatment, this book examines vital areas of service provision and research and points to future directions for the field. On the medical/psychological front, this volume explores the importance of recognizing comorbid psychiatric factors in treatment and of exploring central nervous system function's role as a cause of sexually inappropriate behavior. In the legislative/justice arena it illustrates a “Circles of Support” proposal that mobilizes community resources to aid the adjustment of released offenders rather than branding them as dangerous to the community. And in the area of service provision, this book presents a treatment approach for residential programs that is inspired by research on childhood behavioral problems and special education. This book will increase your effectiveness with: a model of multisystemic treatment for juvenile sex offenders a restorative justice approach for reintegrating adult offenders into the community a study of the physical/mental correlates of organic brain dysfunction a case report on the use of a pharmaceutical treatment (leuprolide acetate) for pedophiles

This new and expanded edition reflects the considerable developments in research and empirical data and captures the increasing breadth of risk assessment approaches, the wider range of empirically based therapies, and the more creative means of considering management. The second edition captures key developments in this area, with new chapters drawing on a range of pressing contemporary issues, such as female offenders, Internet offenders, terrorists, young people involved in harmful sexual behaviour, and protective factors for aggression. There is also extended coverage of the management of offenders within secure settings and in the community, referring to a wider variety of approaches and the incorporation of technology. This book will be of considerable interest to academics, practitioners, and students engaged with understanding and/or treating violence and aggression, sex crime, forensic psychology, and the assessment, treatment, and management of offenders.
