Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Man With the Iron Hand Let us picture in imagination the history of the Great Valley of the Mississippi as a splendid drama enacted upon a giant stage which reaches from the Alleghanies to the Rockies and from the Great Lakes of the Gulf of Mexico and through which the Father of Waters sweeps majestically. Let us people this stage with real men and women - picturesque red men and no less interesting white men, Indians, Spaniards, Frenchmen, Englishmen, explorers, warriors, priests, voyageurs, coureurs de bois, fur traders, and settlers. Let the scene be set about the lakes, along the rivers, among the hills, on the plains, and in the forests. Then, viewing this pageant of the past, let us write the true tales of the Great Valley as we write romance - with life, action, and color - that the history of our Great Valley may live. Book excerpt: DEATH LIES BEYOND THE RIVER RHINE AD 71, Germania Libera: dark dripping forests, inhabited by bloodthirsty barbarians and legendary wild beasts, a furious prophetess who terrorises Rome, and the ghostly spirits of slaughtered Roman legionaries. Enter Marcus Didius Falco, an Imperial agent on a special mission: to find the absconding commander of a legion whose loyalty is suspect. Easier said than done, thinks Marcus, as he makes his uneasy way down the Rhenus, trying to forget that back in sunny Rome his girlfriend Helena Justina is being hotly pursued by Titus Caesar. His mood is not improved when he discovers his only allies are a woefully inadequate bunch of recruits, their embittered centurion, a rogue dog, and its innocent young master; just the right kind of support for an agent unwillingly trying to tame the Celtic hordes. . . ______________________________ Praise of Lindsey Davis: 'Her most ambitious to date. . . Book excerpt: -When his sword hand was struck off, his legend began- Based on the true life of the Baron Goetz von Berlichingen the Iron Hand, the most infamous Imperial knight of the Holy Roman Empire, who marauded through 16th-century Reformation Germany with a prosthetic iron hand. Schoental Abbey, Franconia, 1562. At the end of his long life, a dying Baron Goetz von Berlichingen the Iron Hand travels to his ancestral tomb to seek absolution for his sins. Before he can be buried in his family crypt, the sins of his life must be confessed. Enlisting the services of a Cistercian monk in order to record a narrative of his life as a robber-knight, and hopeful that his confession will not only prove his piety, but will lead to his soul's redemption- what follows is an epic that spans the entire life of the outlaw knight. The confessional journey they take together may lead to redemption- or condemnation- for both of their souls. -Dr. Prof. Kurt Andermann, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau

Book excerpt: During antebellum wars the Regular Army preserved the peace, suppressed the Indians, and bore the brunt of the fighting. The Civil War, however, brought an influx of volunteers who overwhelmed the number of army Regulars, forcing a clash between traditional military discipline and the expectations of citizens. Baring the Iron Hand provides an extraordinarily in-depth examination of this internal conflict and the issue of discipline in the Union Army. Ramold tells the story of the volunteers, who, unaccustomed to such military necessities as obeying officers, accepting punishment, and suppressing individuality, rebelled at the traditional discipline expected by the standing army. Unwilling to fully surrender their perceived rights as American citizens, soldiers both openly and covertly defied the rules. They challenged the right of their officers to lead them and established their own policies on military offenses, proper conduct, and battlefield behavior. Citizen soldiers also denied the army the right to punish them for offenses like desertion, insubordination, and mutiny that had no counterpart in civilian life. Ramold demonstrates that the clash between Regulars and volunteers caused a reinterpretation of the traditional expectations of discipline. The officers of the Regular Army had to contend with independent-minded soldiers who resisted the spit-and-polish discipline that made the army so efficient, but also alienated the volunteers' sense of individuality and manhood. Unable to prosecute the vast number of soldiers who committed offenses, professional officers reached a form of populist accommodation with their volunteer soldiers. Unable to eradicate or prevent certain offenses, the army tried simply to manage them or to just ignore them. Instead of applying traditionally harsh punishments for specific crimes as they had done in the antebellum period, the army instead mollified its men by extending amnesty, modifying sentences, and granting liberal leniency to many soldiers who otherwise deserved the harshest of penalties. Ramold's fascinating look into the lives of these misbehaving soldiers will interest both Civil War historians and enthusiasts.

Book excerpt: The Rebel Alliance’s elite strike force must double-cross an infamous warlord in the second book of the Wraith Squadron series, the companion to the hit Rogue Squadron series. Against all odds, the controversial Wraith Squadron has survived its first covert mission. But now they are called upon to cheat death twice. This time, Wedge Antilles sends them in to stop the warlord Zsinj and his Super Star Destroyer, Iron Fist. If Zsinj joins the Empire, it could turn the tide of war against the Rebels. The Wraith Squadron’s mission: infiltrate the warlord’s fleet and uncover his carefully guarded plans. To do so, they must pose as ruthless pirates seeking to join Zsinj’s forces. And that means first becoming pirates in space lanes teeming with Imperial navy patrols. If that isn’t enough to get them killed, they’ll have to pass one last test—a suicide mission for Zsinj. Can they survive the test and turn the tables on Zsinj? Or is this the end for Wraith Squadron?

Book excerpt: "A superb case of deep intellectual renewal and the most important book to have been written about [Nietzsche] in the past few years."—Gavin Jacobson, New Statesman Nietzsche's impact on the world of culture, philosophy, and the arts is uncontested, but his political thought remains mired in controversy. By placing Nietzsche back in his late-nineteenth-century German context, Nietzsche's Great Politics moves away from the disputes surrounding Nietzsche's appropriation by the Nazis and challenges the use of the philosopher in postmodern democratic thought. Rather than starting with contemporary democratic theory or continental philosophy, Hugo Drochon argues that Nietzsche's political ideas must first be understood in light of Bismarck's policies, in particular his "Great Politics," which transformed the international politics of the late nineteenth century. Nietzsche's Great Politics shows how Nietzsche made Bismarck's notion his own, enabling him to offer a vision of a unified European political order that was to serve as a counterbalance to both Britain and Russia. This order was to be led by a "good European" cultural elite whose goal would be to encourage the rebirth of Greek high culture. In relocating Nietzsche's politics to their own time, the book offers not only a novel reading of the philosopher but also a more accurate picture of why his political thought remains so relevant today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Man With the Iron Hand: Chevalier Henry De Tonty's Exploits in the Valley of the Mississippi In the geographical nomenclature of the North American continent are perpetuated the names of the adventurous men whose achievements have made the story of the great lakes region the most romantic period of American history. Cities, rivers and islands suggest by their names the adventures of hardy coureur de bois and zealous Jesuit and Sulpitian priests. The names of La Salle, DuLuth, Joliet, Perrot, d'Iberville, Bienville, Marquette and Allouez have been thus associated with the scenes of their adventures. Even Louis Hennepin, the vainglorious Franciscan friar, has had honor done his name by two great commonwealths of the old Northwest. But nowhere on the modern map - from the Gulf of Mexico to Baffin's Bay and from the Vermilion Sea to the Bay of Fundy, appears the name of Chevalier Henry de Tonty. Historians have accorded Tonty a meagerness of mention amounting to neglect. With singular unanimity - for, like the doctors, historians are wont to disagree in their judgments - they have recognized his right to a leading place among the men whose courage and fortitude rendered possible the exploration and settlement of the great Mississippi basin; but a connected narrative of Tonty's life remains to-day unwritten. It can be found only in scattered fragments, incidents that figure in the telling of other men's careers.
