Book excerpt: From the acclaimed filmmaker, artist, and bestselling author of No One Belongs Here More Than You, a spectacular debut novel that is so heartbreaking, so dirty, so tender, so funny--so Miranda July--that readers will be blown away. Here is Cheryl, a tightly-wound, vulnerable woman who lives alone, with a perpetual lump in her throat. She is haunted by a baby boy she met when she was six, who sometimes recurs as other people's babies. Cheryl is also obsessed with Phillip, a philandering board member at the women's self-defense nonprofit where she works. She believes they've been making love for many lifetimes, though they have yet to consummate in this one. When Cheryl's bosses ask if their twenty-one-year-old daughter, Clee, can move into her house for a little while, Cheryl's eccentrically ordered world explodes. And yet it is Clee--the selfish, cruel blond bombshell--who bullies Cheryl into reality and, unexpectedly, provides her the love of a lifetime. Tender, gripping, slyly hilarious, infused with raging sexual obsession and fierce maternal love, Miranda July's first novel confirms her as a spectacularly original, iconic, and important voice today, and a writer for all time. The First Bad Man is dazzling, disorienting, and unforgettable.

Book excerpt: Last Man in the Q is the stand of one man amongst millions, one of those many alone and lost in a world of service, in solidarity against injustice. This book is a narrative by a doctor who, with gratitude for the free government education he received, chose a path of self-sufficiency and of service to his fellow man. Driven by an intense desire to make a livelihood out of his own skills, hard work, dedication and knowledge, the last man in the queue draws from his experiences as he grew his own practice from a dream to fruition, in order to draw attention to inherent failings within the ‘system.’ Considering the needs of his patients and customers to be of the greatest concern, the last man in the Q is offended by any insinuation that his motivations be financial, as he strives and perseveres for the greater good, withstanding unnecessary struggles to provide for all concerned. The last man in the Q is far from alone in these struggles, there are millions alike, and in coming together as one force, a triumphant fight can be waged against a ‘system’ of injustice and exploitation. ?? ?????? ??? ?? ???????? ?? ??? ??? ????? ?? ??? ???? ???? - ???????? ?????? ??????? ????

Book excerpt: The legend of El Q'anil, the "Man of Lightning," stands alongside such classic Maya literary artifacts as Popol Vuh and Chilam Balam but has been preserved only through the oral tradition of the Jakaltek Maya. In this tale, the young man Xhuwan Q'anil brings lightning to his people in order to save them from destruction. He undertakes a journey of adventure, participates in a great war, and is subsequently immortalized. It is a story that all Jakaltek children learn, one that reinforces their identity by showing that their people have a hero who lives in each Jakaltek Maya today. VA-ctor Montejo, who was raised in Maya culture and knows its lore intimately, compiled several versions of the legend in Guatemala during the height of paramilitary operations in that country in the 1980s. His contemporary reconstruction lovingly preserves this legend and reflects concern for the survival of Maya culture in the face of oppression. Just as the Maya people of western Guatemala continue to pray for peace at the sanctuary of Q'anil, the legend of the Man of Lightning affirms a culture's enduring traditions. In this edition, the text is presented in English, Spanish, and Jakaltek Maya to secure its deserved place in world literature.

Book excerpt: The Earth itself is a remarkable place. It flows with life in every direction, and no one appreciates the joys of life more than Dionisio Sedano - a teenage orphan whose greatest passions include his love of learning, his desire to experience every adventure the world has to offer, and the never-ending joys found in the Land of Eternal Spring. But the natural balance of the world is in peril. The beings responsible for the wellness of our planet were forced to follow the selfish desires of a single, powerful leader, who is willing to once again destroy it all in order to restore that which was taken from nature. What stands between success and failure is a resplendent bird, who may be the Earth's final stand in the greatest ever clash between the Alpha and the Omega.

Book excerpt: This memoir tells the remarkable story of how Helene Hanff came to write 84, Charing Cross Road, and how its success changed her. Hanff recalls her serendipitous discovery of a volume of lectures by a Cambridge don, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. She devoured Q’s book, and, wanting to read all the books he recommended, began to order them from a small store in London at 84, Charing Cross Road. Thus began a correspondence that became an enormously popular book, play, television production, and movie, and that finally led to the trip to England -- and a visit to Q’s study -- that she recounts in this exuberant memoir. Hanff pays her debt to her mentor and shares her joyous adventures with her many fans. "Reading Helene Hanff’s book is like making a new friend -- a charming, wise, and funny one." -- Betty Rollin "A potpourri . . . easy and assured . . . A delightful companion for the odd hour." -- San Francisco Chronicle "Hanff’s charm is such that when she exults . . . we exult right along with her." -- Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: Armageddon! What's In It For You? In real life, in this universe, the "Turner Diaries" inspired numerous hate crimes and acts of terrorism around the world, including the 1984 assassination of liberal radio host Alan Berg, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, and the 1999 London nail bombings. The Anti-Defamation League identified the "Turner Diaries" as, "probably the most widely-read book among far-right extremists; many [of them] have cited it as the inspiration behind their terrorist organizing and activities." The Policy on the Classification of Hate Propaganda, Sedition, and Treason of the Canada Border Services Agency has classified "The Turner Diaries" as hate-propaganda literature. A fun-house mirror analogue of the "Turner Diaries," "World War Q" is the record of Duke Turner's journey through pro-freedom, counter-culture rebellion against the ultranationalist demagogue President of the United States (known as "The Man") and his overlords, the Illuminati, a secretly emerging totalitarian government working to rule the world through force and propaganda. When new brash tyrannies are imposed against the American people, police arrest Duke for being an, "Unmutual." He is sent to one of the nouveau petit concentration camps sprouting up across the American landscape, where he is beaten and tortured. Suffering and dazed with pain, Duke enters the mythic Sacred Grove. He meets Code Name Mad Honey, his first contact with the ancient foes of the Illuminati-the fun-loving and free-spirited Discordians, who actively work to thwart the Illuminati and The Man. They show Duke a vision of a world of freedom, joy, and equality promised by the Discordian plan, "Operation Fuckup." It is simply a call no moral man could refuse. Duke attends his first meeting with other active Discordians, including hacker-collective "Errorist" Hoshi; practical boots-and-saddles soldier Jamal; and the mysterious, mystical Plural Danne. Duke himself is key to the Discordian revolution for his expertise in making LSD, which is the "chemical Bifrost" that leads to capital E-enlightenment. The four are directed to procure enough chemicals, materials, and working space for Duke to start work. On completion, Operation Fuckup will break the back of The Man and usher in the Age of Aquarius. But the agents of the Illuminati are legion, and regular military and white supremacist civilian militia keep the four on the run. Then Discordian command gives the strangest directive of all: the team is to install life-size bronze statues of The Man across the country and fill them with LSD. But with a spy in their midst and neutron-warhead cruise missiles flying, time is running out for the team and world. Absurd and ironic, "World War Q" humorously weaves interviews and media references (even fair use warnings are in on the joke) with contemporary malignancies such as Q, the Proud Boys, and White Supremacy. "World War Q" also uses footnotes to provide information beyond the narrator's point of view, add meta-commentary (especially between the "Editor" and "Author"), add invective and introspection against various "real life" villains and politics, and simple humor. "World War Q" describes Duke' moves and counter-moves to thwart The Man and Illuminati as they attempt an apocalyptic overthrow of the world through terror and nuclear brinksmanship. It is up to Duke and his team to subvert, subdue, and survive in an increasingly hostile America.
