Book excerpt: Herschel Baker left his life as a rancher to become the first sheriff of Horse Creek, Montana. Only weeks into the job, he’s about to find out what it means to bring the law to a lawless land. It’s up to Hershel to stop all forms of criminality—including the old vigilante justice that once ran the town. When the cowboy Billy Hanks is found hanging from a tree with the label Hoss Steeler pinned to his chest, the culprits must be caught whether or not the accusation is true. With nothing to go on but a dead body, a misspelled note, and a wounded horse, Herschel refuses to look the other way. Someone’s going to pay for this dirty deed—found guilty by the right and proper letter of the law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the Rankins, a family that embodied the risk and ambition that transformed America. John Rankin arrived in the West chasing the adventure of gold mining but soon turned to ranching and building in the new town of Missoula. There he met Olive Pickering, who had left New Hampshire in 1878 to become a teacher and seek a husband on the American frontier. John and Olive's children continued to demonstrate their parent's ambition and nerve. Their son became one of the biggest landowners in the country, one of the first personal injury lawyers, and a crusader against railroads and mining. Jeannette became the first woman in a national legislature, voted against two world wars and led marches protesting the Vietnam War. As a dean, Harriet helped develop the modern co-educational university. Edna traveled the world advocating for birth control. The Rankins faced both national adulation and condemnation for the choices they made. Their family story concerns independence and education, activism, the boundaries created by gender, religious choices, and the changing meaning of the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Coming Man from Canton Christopher W. Merritt mines the historical and archaeological record of the Chinese immigrant experience in Montana to explore new questions and perspectives. During the 1860s Chinese immigrants arrived by the thousands, moving into the Rocky Mountain West and tenaciously searching for prosperity in the face of resistance, restriction, racism, and armed hostility from virtually every ethnic group in American society. As second-class citizens, Chinese immigrants remained largely insular and formed their own internal governments as well as labor and trade networks, typically establishing communities apart from the main towns. Chinese miners, launderers, restaurant keepers, gardeners, railroad laborers, and other workers became a separate but integral part of the American experience in the Intermountain West. Although Chinese immigrants constituted more than 10 percent of the Montana Territory’s total population by 1870, the historical records provide a biased and narrow perspective, as they were generally written by European American community members. Merritt uses the statewide Montana context to show the diversity of Chinese settlements that has often been neglected by archival studies. His research highlights how the legacy of the Chinese in Montana is, or is not, reflected in modern Montana identity and how scholars, educators, professionals, and the public can alter the existing perception of this population as the “other” and perceive it instead an integral part of Montana’s past.

Book excerpt: "The day his bride threw a temper tantrum and refused to walk down the aisle was the happiest day of Sam Garrison's life. To free himself forever from the spoiled brat's clutches, the cynical Montana rancher needed a new fiancée--just until he could get out of New York and back home where he belonged. Julianne Montgomery, the beautiful cousin of the bride, seemed the perfect choice; she was practical enough to treat the whole matter as a business proposition. If only she weren't also so dangerously tempting. Her smooth ivory skin begged for his caress, her full red lips nearly cried out for his kiss...and soon their business relationship was the last thing on his mind!" -Back cover.
