They contain little more than the early history of a controversy once very famous, now nearly forgotten, but almost without a parallel for the permanence of its effects. The eve of a Census is a fit time to remember the roan who first taught us how to judge the results of the Census. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Population; A Study in Malthusianism I first began to work on the question of population at the suggestion of Professor Giddings. I soon found that there was a large amount of statistical material bear ing upon this subject Which had, for the most part, been neglected in the discussions of the growth of population. The effort to make use of some of this material has resulted in this essay. At all stages of my work I have been able to profit by the suggestions and criticisms of a number of the men teaching sociology and economics at Columbia. I am under special obligations, however, to Professors Cooley and Chaddock Who have read the proofs in addition to the other aid they have given me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Malthusian Herald, Vol. 1: Devoted to the Solution of the Great Social Problem No vote would be taken, the sole object of the discussion being the elucidation of the truth. Mr. Hills took as his keynote that perfect chastity, save for the purposes of procreation, was incumbent on all. He said emphatically that people had no right to have more children than they could support. The ideal of perfect purity was not ascetic celibacy, but perfect love on the physical, mental, psychical, and spiritual planes; and he would assert that this entire purity was not only possible but easy. The methods recommended by Bradlaugh and Besant, and others, had led to terrible immorality - a remark which evoked a roar of remonstrance and hisses. On the ground that our bodies were the temples of the Holy Ghost, he urged that men should aim at the ideal of pure and consecrated lives. Dr. T. Allinson said Mr. Hills had conceded so much that it was difficult to reply to him. They agreed that men should not have more children than they could support, but differed as to the mode of restriction. The most ancient literary memorials now extant prove that this subject was examined with a high degree of interest in the very infancy of society; and the inquiry has been pursued ever since without intermission, although with different de grees of zeal and industry, up to the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Medical Address on the Benevolence of Malthus, Contrasted With the Corruptions of Neo-Malthusianism Remembering the obloquy with which my former refe rence to the size of families had been received, I struck out the pages bearing directly on this subject, fearing that they might prejudice the main purpose of my book. It is therefore only after mature consideration that I again take up this population question for I am convinced that the time has arrived when it is the duty of the Christian physician to pronounce a clear judgment on this matter, and state the right views and methods respecting the increase of the population, and the regulation of family life. Malthus The writer in the Encyclopaedia Britannica, from whom these details of Malthus' life are taken, informs us that the book was received with some surprise, and excited considerable atten tion, as being an attempt to overturn the prevalent theory of political Optimism, and to refute, upon philosophical principles, the Speculations then so much in vogue, as to the indefinite perfectibility of human institutions. In this remarkable essay the general principle of population, which Wallace, Hume, and others had very distinctly enunciated before him, though without foreseeing the consequences that might be deduced from it, was clearly expounded; and some of the important conclusions to which it leads in regard to the probable im provement of human society were likewise stated and explained; but his illustrations were not sufficient, and he, therefore, sought in travel further confirmation of his theories. In 1799 he visited Norway, Sweden, and Russia, and, after the peace of Amiens, France; in which countries he busily collected all the data he could bearing upon his researches. In 1815 he was appointed to the professorship of political economy and modern history at Haileybury, near London, which chair he occupied until his death in 1834, at the age of 70. He left behind him one son and one daughter. The son is, we believe, still alive, or was so a few years ago. Mill: Giving the Malthusian Theory of Over-Population Malthus combated the position of those writers in whose eyes the perfectibility of men and of political institutions was without limits, and reduced to a very low figure the influence of bad governments he defended the rights of property, and combated the different socialistic theories which were at that day in the air: he Showed, also, that human societies had at all times had only two obstacles to their increase, namely, Vice and Misery: and he pointed to the too rapid increase of population in proportion to subsistence, as being the prin cipal cause of these obstacles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Malthusian Handbook: Designed to Induce Married People to Limit Their Families Within Their Means It is not as defendant that I plead to you to-day - not simply as defending myself do I stand here - but I speak as counsel for hundreds of the poor, and it is they for whom I defend this case. My clients are scattered up and down through the length and breadth of the land I find them amongst the poor, amongst whom I have been so much; I find my clients amongst the fathers, who see their wage ever reducing, and prices ever rising; I find my clients amongst the mothers worn out with over-frequent child-bearing, and with two or three little ones around too young to guard them selves, while they have no time to guard them. It is enough for a woman at home to have the care, the clothing, the training of a large family of young children to look to; but it is a harder task when oftentimes the mother, who should be at home with her little ones, has to go out and work in the fields for wage to feed them when her presence is needed in the house. I find my clients meme. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pre-Malthusian Doctrines of Population: A Study in the History of Economic Theory In the course of this inquiry, I found that much more had been done than I had been aware of when I first published the Essay. The poverty and misery arising from a too rapid in crease of population had been distinctly seen and the most violent remedies proposed so long ago as the times of Plato and Aristotle. And of late years the subject has been treated in such a manner by some of the French economists, occasion ally by Montesquieu, Sir James Stewart, Mr. Arthur Young and Mr. Townsend, as to create a natural surprise that it had not excited more public attention. Nitti's statement (p. 4) that the phenomena which sug gested to Malthus his terrible law occurred only with the birth of modern industry is true only in a limited sense, as this essay will prove. The doctrines of population that were advanced before the nineteenth century may be grouped according to the characteristics of the general body of thought of which they are part. If arranged chronologically they appear in about the following order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of David Ricardo to Thomas Robert Malthus: 1810 1823 The following Letters are printed for the first time from the original manuscripts, kindly lent for the purpose by Colonel Malthus, gb. The representatives of Ricardo have been good enough to make search for the corresponding letters of Malthus, but without success. The Collection covers the whole period of the friendship of the two men. What is of purely private interest (a very small portion) has, as a rule, been omitted. There is seldom any obscurity in the text; the handwriting of Ricardo is clear and good. The earlier letters have no envelopes. The breaking of the seal has frequently torn a page, and destroyed a word or two. In two cases we have nothing but the fragment of a letter. But fortunately the bulk of the series has reached us in a complete state. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Malthusian Limit a Theory of a Possible Static Condition, for the Human Race This brought me to the theoretical consideration of a static condition, and the generalization of a two-class system, which covers Hansen's three classes in a different perspective, and seems the log ical extreme. This gives a long-needed division of the troublesome question as to whether the family or the individual is the unit of society. Provide recognition for both, in distinct classes necessitated by understood conditions, and the whole social organism seems simplified.
