The main aim of the essay is to show how ekphrasis and its specific features serve as a space in which gender conflicts are debated in the realm of aesthetics and how the emergence of a “distinctive female ekphrastic mode” (Kennedy 2012: 90) led to a shift from masculine dominance towards female power in the genre. In a first step, a definition of ekphrasis will be given and we will argue the case for why certain characteristics make ekphrasis particularly suitable for exhibiting the male gaze. Subsequently, in a second step, we will demonstrate to what extent female writers have modified the conventions of ekphrasis and challenged its traditional gender relations to suit their own need for self-determination. Carol Ann Duffy’s poem Standing Female Nude (1985) will serve as an example for feminist ekphrasis.

That identification can take on different levels starting with admiration because of looks, talent or taking them as role models which will furthermore end in consumption; may it be fashion, cosmetics or hairstyles.

In paragraphe 3 I try to explain with Battersby how and why women accepted this exclusion sometimes and how they tried to resist and to fight back this kind of misogyny. Paragraphe 4 should answer the question why Battersby's new concept of genius is called a female genius, while paragraphe 5 wants to bring in some arguments against the separation and categorization into female/feminine and male/masculine concept. The last paragraphe contains also a very short conclusion and my own point of view.

Yet her playful, but at the same time not immediately understandable way of writing is considered as hermetic, being pretty difficult to read. Ridiculed on the one hand she is acclaimed on the other as the creator of a literary style that has set its mark in twentiethcentury prose and poetry..." (xiii). This style has largely been influenced by cubist painting and her friendship with Pablo Picasso. Tender Buttons is thus of course an homage to him, and there are many similarities between cubism and Stein's writing. However, it is the aim of this essay to point out both in what way the art movement contributed to her work, and how she is at the same time able to overcome this male tradition by stepping away and changing it.

Or so one is made to believe in retrospection. Of course women were not absent from history but they certainly are to a great extent from historical representations. Patriarchy dominated Western culture for more than two thousand years and supplied the framework for what is to be known and how, i.e. in which contexts, it is to be known. Historical material has always been scarce but in regard to women it is almost non-existent. So women rightfully started to ask where their part in history was or why they have been consequently written out of history instead of being included. A necessity arose to deconstruct certain historical "truths" and to make women visible in and show their relevance to our past to build up strength and to obtain a voice or rather voices in order to question the present and the past systems. In this paper I examine Carol Ann Duffy's The World's Wife, whose poetry runs very much in above line. I will concentrate on the gender constructions established within The World's Wife. Even though Duffy questions traditional conceptions of men and women and their relationships with each other, she maintains a binary gender structure. The first chapter therefore deals with a general overview of gender conceptions constructed in and through the poems. The second and third chapter will take a closer look at certain poems. I think the poems weave their own web of femininity. In a circular movement they refer to past and future thus describing a female/feminist tradition. Accordingly the first and the last poem, Little Red Cap and Demeter, form the outline of the circle, not only in regard to their position but also by implicitly refering to each other. My third chapter will extend the
