Book excerpt: A new edition of the bestselling classic – published with a special introduction to mark its 10th anniversary This pioneering account sets out to understand the structure of the human brain – the place where mind meets matter. Until recently, the left hemisphere of our brain has been seen as the ‘rational’ side, the superior partner to the right. But is this distinction true? Drawing on a vast body of experimental research, Iain McGilchrist argues while our left brain makes for a wonderful servant, it is a very poor master. As he shows, it is the right side which is the more reliable and insightful. Without it, our world would be mechanistic – stripped of depth, colour and value.

Book excerpt: Qiang is the son of Chao, a peasant farmer whose wife is Nuan. When Qiang was very young Nuan gave birth to a little girl, Lan. Qiang and Lan become inseparable. But Nuan notices that when Qiang goes off to school, after a time he comes home late. Finally Nuan goes off to find what is detaining her son and she finds that he has been receiving tuition from a Buddhist master on meditation. Nuan soon notices that Qiang has some extraordinary talents. But after many seasons of plenty, a long drought sets in and Chao is no longer able to provide for his family. Unable to pay the Emperor’s taxes, Chao realises he must relocate. Chao faced with the shame of not being able to care for his family commits suicide. The family is taken in by the provincial governor, Xian Riu. The governor is an austere man, who although generous to Qiang’s sister and mother, is determined to test Qiang in the most arduous of ways. In his final test the governor sends Qiang off to deliver a gift to another provincial governor. Unfortunately to meet his obligations Qiang has to traverse areas where bandits now prevail. The story relates how Qiang endures his hardships in meeting his obligations to Xian Riu. Along the way he is captured by bandits and escapes. He encounters new masters who help him learn the basic tenets of Buddhism which enable him to maintain a sense of equanimity despite his trials. There is a final confrontation with the bandits which Qiang must endure before returning to Xian Riu’s palace meeting all his obligations where he is finally confirmed as a Buddhist master and endowed with the title Takygulpa Rinpoche.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, point and shoot.? These words from his father propelled Buz Fawcett?s shooting success as a child, gaining him a number of High Gun awards at local trap clubs by the time he was fourteen. Because of his success, his father awarded him his grandfather?s Model 1912 Winchester, which he mastered, even though it ?kicked the whey? out of him. However, his amazing shooting abilities as a kid didn?t follow him into adulthood. Fawcett entered into what he calls his ?Dark Ages? of shooting after accepting an associate editor position at Sports Afield in New York City, where he had to read and edit what other gunmen were writing about shooting techniques. Eventually, he took a position as editor of Guns & Ammo magazine, located in California. He soon found himself in a position where he could shoot as much as he liked. After a number of years and extensive research into shooting methods, Fawcett rediscovered his talents through a technique called ?Instinctive Shooting.? This research and a lot of practice finally led to teaching a workshop on instinctive shooting to help others become adept at this miraculous ?point and shoot? method. Instinctive Shooting is Fawcett?s guide for other gunmen, describing exactly how and what needs to be done to achieve the ultimate shooting instincts. Practical and hands-on, the book covers such topics as determining your dominant eye, achieving proper shotgun fit, how to correct point and shoot, selecting equipment, practice regimens, mounting, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Suhas Tambe was initiated into the study and life of a yogi through his Indian spiritual master, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali―an age-old system of guidance―were integral to his training. Tambe is now a scholar and longterm practitioner of this esoteric wisdom. He is also the first Westerner to reveal the hidden sequence of these sutras, which he received from his teacher. From the time of Patanjali onward (~300 BCE), the scrambling of the sequence of sutras was a respected tradition. Such deliberate confusion was done with a view to preserving the sanctity of these precious teachings. Since interpretation of any sutra must bear reference to and consistency with the previous and the following sutra, proper sequence becomes a critical factor, fundamental to the use of this time-honored scripture. The key to the real sequence of Yoga-SÅ©tra was handed down verbally by the guru only to the eligible disciple. The Making of a Yoga Master reveals this original sequence, which has been hidden for so long. Far more than an instruction manual, this book is also about one seeker’s progression. The author, who began his search entrenched in materialism (he was an accountant with an MBA working in IT), was “transformed” into a devoted Yoga practitioner. This path thoroughly changed his life’s priorities, evolved his purpose and dissolved old habits in a way that will be inspiring to many. “Yoga not just entered my life,” he writes, “but now, it is my life.” The clear and sequential stages of transformation through yoga are documented here as perhaps nowhere else in contemporary literature. This new sequence unfolds a practical road-map for knowing and practicing the elevation of the seeker’s awareness―from the physical to more subtle and refined levels―and designates observable milestones to determine one’s progress on the path. The Making of a Yoga Master marries the philosophy of Yoga with clear “how-to” instructions.
