Book Synopsis Magnetic Resonance Scanning and Epilepsy by : Simon D. Shorvon
Download or read book Magnetic Resonance Scanning and Epilepsy written by Simon D. Shorvon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was only in 1980 that the first recognisable magnetic resonance images of the human brain were published, by Moore and Holland from Nottingham University in England. There then followed a number of clinical trials of brain imaging, the most notable from the Hammersmith Hospital in London using a system designed by EMI, the original manufacturers of the first CT machines. A true revolution in medicine has ensued; in only a few years there are thousands of scanning units, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has assumed a central importance in medical investigation. It is an extraordinary fact that within a few years of development, the esoteric physics of nuclear spin, angular momentum, and magnetic vector precession were harnessed to provide exquisite images of living anatomy; modem science has no greater tribute. That indisputable king of neurology and the oldest of recorded conditions, epilepsy, has not been untouched by the new technology; indeed, it is our view that the introduction of MRI of electroencephalography (EEG) in the late has been as important to epilepsy as was that 1930s. Now, for the first time, the structural and aetiological basis of the condition is susceptible to thorough investigation, and MRI can provide structural detail to parallel the functional detail of EEG. MRI has the same potential as had EEG over 50 years ago, to provide a new level of understanding of the basic mechanisms, the clinical features and the treatment of epilepsy.
Book Synopsis Magnetic Resonance in Epilepsy by : Ruben Kuzniecky
Download or read book Magnetic Resonance in Epilepsy written by Ruben Kuzniecky and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2004-12-16 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkable advances in imaging have increased the importance of MRI for diagnostic, treatment and management of epilepsy. Neuroimaging of patients with epilepsy no longer simply deals with the technology and interpretation of images but also with issues of brain metabolism, energetics, cognition and brain dysfunction. The first edition of Magnetic Resonance in Epilepsy came into clinical practice in 1995 with a revolutionary idea; that is, MR is as important as EEG in the clinical management of patients with epilepsy. The second edition of Magnetic Resonance in Epilepsy, the only comprehensive text in the field of epilepsy neuroimaging, reviews fundamental concepts and new advances in MR technology, computerized analysis, MR spectroscopy, DWI and other neuroimaging techniques such as PET, SPECT and MEG application to the study of patients with epileptic disorders. *Provides a crucial update of recent advances in imaging techniques *Timely publication as subject of neuroimaging is a very "hot" area in both clinical epilepsy and basic neuroscience research *Editors are well-respected in this field

Book Synopsis Diffusion-Weighted MR Imaging of the Brain, Head and Neck, and Spine by : Toshio Moritani
Download or read book Diffusion-Weighted MR Imaging of the Brain, Head and Neck, and Spine written by Toshio Moritani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book, now in an updated and extended third edition, systematically covers the use of diffusion-weighted (DW) MR imaging in all major areas of neuroradiology, including imaging of the head and neck and the spine as well as the brain. The authors guide the reader from the basic principles of DW imaging through to the use of cutting-edge diffusion sequences such as diffusion tensor (DTI) and kurtosis (DKI), fiber tractography, high b value, intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM), neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), and oscillating gradient spin echo (OGSE). Pathology, pathophysiology, and patient management and treatment are all thoroughly discussed. Since the early descriptions by LeBihan and colleagues of the ability to image and measure the micromovement of water molecules in the brain, diffusion imaging and its derivatives have contributed ever more significantly to the evaluation of multiple disease processes. In comprehensively describing the state of the art in the field, this book will be of high value not only for those who deal routinely with neuro-MR imaging but also for readers who wish to establish a sound basis for understanding diffusion images in the hope of extending these principles into more exotic areas of neuroimaging.

Book Synopsis Brain Repair After Stroke by : Steven C. Cramer
Download or read book Brain Repair After Stroke written by Steven C. Cramer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing evidence identifies the possibility of restoring function to the damaged brain via exogenous therapies. One major target for these advances is stroke, where most patients can be left with significant disability. Treatments have the potential to improve the victim's quality of life significantly and reduce the time and expense of rehabilitation. Brain Repair After Stroke reviews the biology of spontaneous brain repair after stroke in animal models and in humans. Detailed chapters cover the many forms of therapy being explored to promote brain repair and consider clinical trial issues in this context. This book provides a summary of the neurobiology of innate and treatment-induced repair mechanisms after hypoxia and reviews the state of the art for human therapeutics in relation to promoting behavioral recovery after stroke. Essential reading for stroke physicians, neurologists, rehabilitation physicians and neuropsychologists.
