Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magistrate a Farce in Three Acts The magistrate is, after Sweet Lavender, perhaps, the most popular of Mr. Pinero's plays, and it is particularly interesting as being the first of his works in which his own individuality found ah solutely independent expression, and emphatically and triumphantly asserted itself. In fact this farce marks an epoch in the dramatist's career, and shows him creating a really new and original order of English comic play, the further development of which may be traced in the successive plays which, together with The Magistrate, formed the famous Court series of farces, namely, The Schoolmis tress, Dandy Dick, and The Cabinet Min iste'r. About Arthur Wing Pinero, the Author: Following the sinking of the RMS Lusitania by German U-boat on 7 May 1915, Pinero wrote to The Times calling on naturalised British citizens of German origin to make public statements of their loyalty to the King and reject Germany's methods of warfare: ...We are in the tenth month on a war which has from the beginning been carried on by Germany with almost unspeakable treachery and vileness; but up to the present time not a single one of the distinguished Germans in our midst has thought fit to make a public avowal of his disagreement with the deliberate policy of barbarism pursued by the German Powers or to utter a word of indignation and disclaimer.

Book excerpt: Arthur Wing Pinero's 'The Magistrate: A Farce in Three Acts' is a satirical play that delves into societal norms and expectations through clever wit and humor. Set in Victorian London, the play follows the misadventures of a well-respected magistrate who gets entangled in a series of comedic misunderstandings and mistaken identities. Pinero's writing style is characterized by sharp dialogue and farcical situations, making 'The Magistrate' a classic example of late 19th-century British comedy. The play explores themes of social order and hypocrisy, while also providing a light-hearted and entertaining experience for the audience.

Book excerpt: This book is a humorous take on Henrik Ibsen's famous works, featuring simplified adaptations of titles such as 'Rosmersholm', 'Hedda Gabler', and 'The Wild Duck'. As a parody, the book uses comedy to highlight the absurdities and ironies in Ibsen's serious dramas. The reader is taken on a hilarious journey through some of Ibsen's most popular plays, with witty commentary and exaggerated characters. This book is a great read for those who enjoy a good laugh and want to see Ibsen's works from a different perspective.

Book excerpt: When, during the season of 1885, the exceptional success of "The Magistrate" had revived the fortunes of the Court Theatre and included that house once again among the popular places of entertainment, the future policy of Messrs. John Clayton and Arthur Cecil's management was practically determined. The essentially comic play, the farce of character and manners, was henceforth to compose the programme, and Mr. Pinero, who had suggested the new policy, and so happily inaugurated it, was naturally commissioned to provide the next play. "The Schoolmistress" was accordingly forthcoming in due time, and in the composition of this piece the author further developed his ideas as to the scope and meaning of modern farce, ideas which will be found briefly expounded in my introductory note to "The Cabinet Minister," published in the present series of Mr. Pinero's plays. "The Schoolmistress" has a very simple stage-history. It was produced at the old Court Theatre on March 27, 1886, and it immediately caught the laughter and applause of the town, the success being so decided that the play retained its place in the programme until January 22, 1887, the total number of performances in the interval having amounted to 290.
