Book excerpt: Summary about this story: Tommy was a young boy who was active and creative. He lived in the beautiful and quiet town of Pumpkin Hollow, which was surrounded by hills and forests that looked beautiful in the fall. Pumpkin Hollow was known for its beautiful scenery, especially during Halloween, when the line between the real world and the magical was thinner and amazing things could happen. Tommy has always loved Halloween, so he was looking forward to the night when the ordinary becomes extraordinary. The people in the town had a great time celebrating Halloween. They decorated their homes with scary decorations, put happy pumpkins on their doorsteps, and baked pumpkin pies that filled the air with their smell. As October got closer, the joy was clear, and Tommy's heart was full of eagerness. While looking through his grandparents' attic one sunny afternoon, Tommy found an old, dusty box hidden among things that had been forgotten. He found a ghostly white dress with silvery threads that sparkled in the dim light. The dress was made of many layers of fabric and thought. When he put it on, the fabric seemed to fit him perfectly, making him look almost like a ghost. Tommy liked how mysterious the outfit made him feel, so he kept it for himself. He had no idea that this choice would make Halloween night the scariest one of his lives. As the sun went down on Halloween night, Tommy wore the great outfit and walked into a changed Pumpkin Hollow. Children dressed as everything from evil ghouls to friendly witches marched through the streets, which were lit up with lanterns and filled with scary music. Tommy, who was now a real ghost, walked around town. People were amazed by what they saw and couldn't believe what they were seeing. On his way, he stopped in the town square, where he saw ghostly creatures dancing in the moonlight. He joined their airy dance and felt like he had never felt before. As word spread about the mystery ghost, kids and adults gathered to hear Tommy talk about his trips to the spirit world. His words made amazing pictures come to mind, taking the listener on a trip to where he had been. While it was still early in the night, Tommy's spirit friends took him on a thrilling trip through Pumpkin Hollow. They went into the scary forest, where the bent trees cast strange shadows and ghostly animals hid in the dark. The woods seemed full of magic and secrets that were just ready to be found out. They found the famous Whispering Willow, a tree that people say makes dreams come true on Halloween night. Tommy told the tree his most sincere Halloween wish, and the tree gave him lots of sweets and treats in return. That night, they had more adventures, like when they found a secret cave full of sparkling crystals, met a friendly black cat who led them through pumpkin patches, and danced with the spirits. Tommy was sad when the clock struck midnight, which meant Halloween was over, because he knew it was the end of his time as a real ghost. With tears in his eyes, he went back to his grandparents' attic, where the miraculous outfit was carefully kept. Tommy was sure it would be there for him the next time he went out for Halloween. In the years that followed, people loved to tell stories about what Tommy did on Halloween in Pumpkin Hollow. He kept wearing the magical shirt, which had become a sign of his connection to the magical world of the town. Tommy became known as the Pumpkin Hollow Halloween legend, and kids came from all over to hear his stories. This kept the magic alive. Every year, the costume gave him another night of wonder and reminded everyone that Halloween was a time when the world was full of secrets for those with open minds and a spirit of adventure. As the years went by, Tommy was still a respected figure in Pumpkin Hollow. He was a living legend who embodied the spirit of the holiday. The town kept having fun on Halloween, and Tommy's stories made new generations think that the holiday could be magical. So, the story of Tommy, the boy who once turned into a real ghost on Halloween night, shone as brightly as the lights that lined the streets. The magic of Halloween and the spirit of the costume lived on, making new generations wonder and come up with new ideas. Here's how the story starts: Once upon a time, a young boy named Tommy lived in the beautiful and quiet town of Pumpkin Hollow, which was surrounded by red, orange, and gold-colored hills and forests. Pumpkin Hollow was a magical place where each season had its own special charm, but the town really came to life during Halloween. Pumpkin Hollow seemed to have a special connection to the mysterious and supernatural. This connection grew stronger as October got closer, making the air full of excitement. Tommy was a boy who was always interested and full of wonder. His family had lived in Pumpkin Hollow for many generations, and ever since he could walk, he was interested in the stories about Halloweens past. Pumpkin-carving events, hayrides through the woods at night, and the famous Pumpkin Hollow Parade have been around for many years. Every year, he was excited for October to come because he knew it would bring him new activities and the chance to live in a town that was known for its Halloween parties. As September turned into October, Pumpkin Hollow changed. The cold autumn air smelled like dropping leaves, apples, and a little pumpkin spice. Trees that used to be green now wore red and gold robes, and the wind made the leaves rustle like whispers. Pumpkins of different sizes, each turned into a happy jack-o'-lantern with a burning light inside, were left on people's doorsteps. But Pumpkin Hollow wasn't just different because it changed on the outside. It was the atmosphere, the feeling that the air itself was magical. Tommy could feel it, and he and his friends spent their afternoons looking for buried treasures and secrets in the town's nooks and crannies that seemed just out of reach. Tommy's family lived in a nice house that was hidden in an old oak wood on the edge of town. His bedroom window looked out on a forest that was right next to Pumpkin Hollow. He would often spend hours staring out the window and thinking about what was beyond the tree line. It was a beautiful place with fireflies that danced at night and owls that hooted at the moon. While looking through his grandparents' attic one sunny afternoon, Tommy found an old, dusty trunk hidden under a pile of lost treasures. He carefully opened the trunk and showed off a collection of old outfits with a gleam in his eye. There were ragged pirate hats, beautiful dresses with lace and silk, and superhero capes in bright colors. In all the layers of fabric and ideas, one outfit stood out: a ghostly white dress with silvery lines that seemed to shine in the dim attic light. Tommy's heart skipped a beat as he reached out to touch it. He liked the way the fabric felt, and when he put it on, it seemed to fit his small frame exactly. When he looked in the broken mirror in the attic, he saw himself as a real ghost. He was almost clear and had a wispy, ghostly look. Tommy was curious and confused, so he decided to keep the suit for himself. It seemed to invite him into a world full of magic and exciting things to do. He didn't know that what he did would lead to the scariest Halloween night of his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful costume design requires a solid foundation in general artistic principles and specific knowledge of how to apply those principles. Cunningham presents readers with just such a foundation and develops it to expose beginning costume designers to the myriad skills they need to develop in order to costume successful stage productions. She begins at the most basic conceptual level—reading plays from a costume designer's perspective. She then follows through with the practical considerations that must be considered at every stage of the costuming process—research, development, sketching, and costume construction. Cunningham has built on the long-standing success of the outstanding first edition with new figures and updates throughout the text, including 24 pages in full color. Examples have been selected from a wide range of stage productions representing a variety of designers, styles, and approaches. Interviews with award-winning designers from stage, film, and other media show the practical importance of the book's concepts. Every chapter incorporates material reflecting the ever-increasing impact of technology, especially computers, on costuming. New to this edition is an ancillary download package (available here), giving students a selection of basic figure drawings to serve as the base layer for digital renderings, ready-made forms and checklists for assembling and organizing costumes for shows, and a list of research and reference websites with easily clickable links.

Book excerpt: A revealing look at how and why we dress up for events from historical reenactments to Halloween, with an “engaging writing style and rich illustrations” (Choice). What does it mean to people around the world to put on costumes to celebrate their heritage, reenact historic events, assume a role on stage, or participate in Halloween or Carnival? Self-consciously set apart from everyday dress, costume marks the divide between ordinary and extraordinary settings and enables the wearer to project a different self or special identity. In this fascinating book, Pravina Shukla offers richly detailed case studies from the United States, Brazil, and Sweden to show how individuals use costumes for social communication and to express facets of their personalities. “Revelatory . . . a wide-ranging book bringing attention to clothing as part of festivals and folk heritage events, pop culture conventions and dramatic performances.” —Nuvo

Book excerpt: A Whimsical array of ghosts and goblins, spooks and skeletons, animals and nursery-room characters parade through this unparalleled collection of more than one hundred years of American Halloween costumes and masquerade. Photographer Phyllis Galembo approaches her subjects with the delight and wonder of one who has discovered an entire cast of characters backstage in an abandoned theater. Through her lens, the costumes rise from the dead to once again dance, play, and amuse. Ranging from handmade to store-bought, satin to polyester, the masks, wigs, and costumes, whether recognizable figures or obscure, pique our childhood memories. In her celebration of Halloween revelry, Galembo never settles for the ordinary; instead she creates evocative scenes of dressed-to-scare young trick-or-treaters "modeling" their disguises and of undead spirits haunting their surroundings. The costumes, which span over a century, take on magical qualities through fanciful sets and specialized lighting effects. Accompanying the costumes is a history of this always-popular holiday and essays discussing Galembo's inspirations and techniques. Through her art, Galembo allows us to act out our youthful fantasies of transformation -- to become, or at least observe, what we most want to be: free of inhibitions, of fixed notions of identity. Her images make us laugh and dream and maybe even believe in ghosts. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: "In the Land of the Dinosaurs: The Mammoth's Halloween Costume" is a fun book for kids that takes place in a world full of huge mountains and old forests. Max is a young, curious giant with a heart exactly the size of his body. The story follows him as he goes on an amazing Halloween journey. Max's loving parents, Manny and Martha, live in a beautiful cave between two huge rocks. With Halloween coming up, Max becomes more interested in the parties and celebrations going on all around him in the dinosaur world. Oscar the pterodactyl and Tina the triceratops tell him about fun costumes, pumpkin lanterns, and tasty treats. Max, who is excited and interested, asks to spend Halloween with his folks. Even though mammoths don't celebrate Halloween, Manny and Martha look at each other with a sly grin and decide to get Max involved. Max then says that he wants to dress up as a scary dinosaur for Halloween, drawing ideas from the animals that like to hang out where he is. Because they love and support him no matter what, Max's folks decide to help him make the dinosaur costume of his dreams. To make the scales on his back and tail, they get vines, twigs, and leaves from the bush. Max is so excited as they work on the outfit together that he can't hold it in. He can't wait to put it on and feel like a real dinosaur. Max gets his finished outfit on Halloween. His parents make a few small changes, and then he is ready to go trick-or-treating with his friends Tina and Oscar. As they leave on their Halloween adventure, they are shocked by the decorations and pumpkin lanterns that have been set up around the old forest. Creatures dressed up in scary costumes are making everyone laugh. After some time, the three of them reach an open area with a Halloween costume contest. Max, Tina, and Oscar are excited to take part, and the judges give them prizes for their creative outfits. Max is thrilled to have won the prize for the scariest outfit. As the night goes on, Max and his friends enjoy Halloween in ways they never thought possible. They play games, dance, and eat a huge meal. As the night comes to a close, Max goes back to his cozy cave, takes off his dinosaur costume, and thinks about what a great Halloween trip it was. Max loves his family and friends very much because they helped him reach his goal and showed him that with their help, anything is possible, even a baby giant dressed as a dinosaur for Halloween. The story shows how important friendship, dreams, and all the wonderful things in the world are. This is how the story starts: Max was a baby mammoth that lived in a world full of old woods and high peaks a long time ago. This friendly and curious giant had a huge heart, and his kindness was just as big as his size. His cave was safe because it was tucked between two huge, solid rocks. It was always a treat and an honor to be Max. He would go into the vast desert every day at dawn because he was very curious and wanted to see everything there was to see. With every step he took on the beautiful ground, his huge body left a mark on this old area. Max wasn't the only one in the middle of this magical land. His parents, Manny and Martha, are very careful, so they made his basement home a close-knit family. They worked together to make a safe place where they could live through the hard times of ancient times—a warm and loving place in the middle of a harsh environment. Max could feel the excitement building in the air as the seasons changed and the land went through its normal changes. He became interested in the idea of a party. On its way, Halloween, a one-of-a-kind event, was coming up. Max was interested because his friends and people on the air had been talking about this wonderful event. He had never been to a Halloween party or done anything scary on Halloween before. Max was interested in the accounts of beautiful costumes, glowing pumpkin lanterns, and tasty snacks that filled the room. Max was getting more and more excited about Halloween every day. His friends, Oscar the pterodactyl and Tina the triceratops, told him about the things they did on Halloween. Max was mesmerized by their creative descriptions, which made him think of magical parties and magical disguises. Max chose to make the most of the nice afternoon. He went to his parents, Manny and Martha, with a strong will and told them the truth. Max said, "Mom and Dad, I want to celebrate Halloween this year. I want to dress up and have fun with my friends." Manny and Martha smiled along with Max because they could see how happy he was. He asked in a somber voice, "Halloween, you say?" "It is not a custom amongst mammoths, but if it stirs your heart, dear Max, we shall stand by you." Martha agreed and nodded, her eyes shining with love. Max's mind was racing as he imagined his dream costume. "We will help you make a wonderful costume, my child. Tell me, what does your heart desire?" "I just picture myself as a mean dinosaur!" he cried with joy. He was thrilled at the thought of spending the night as one of the beautiful animals he had seen for a long time wandering their ancestral lands. Max's folks were happy and supportive of his choice. They set out to make the best outfit possible. They worked very hard to make scales for his back and tail by weaving together leaves, twigs, and plants from the lush forest.
