Book Synopsis Magic Carpet Ride by : Philip Harris
Download or read book Magic Carpet Ride written by Philip Harris and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From humble beginnings in wartime Peckham, where his first memories are of being carried down into the air-raid shelter by his mother, Phil Harris would go on to transform his father's market stall into Britain's biggest carpet retail chain, himself becoming one of the richest people in the country, a member of the House of Lords and a passionate supporter of charitable causes. An extraordinary retailer, largely instinctive with an exceptional feel for what the customer wanted, Harris and his astonishing business career, with its ups and downs, are the central themes to the book. Today he is as well-known for his charitable work. Severely dyslexic himself, with Tony Blair's personal support Lord Harris created the first academy school in London. There are now thirty-five Harris Academy schools, and it was David Cameron's relationship with Lord Harris that persuaded the former PM to espouse the academy school so enthusiastically. These, then, are the fascinating memoirs of one of the country's greatest entrepreneurs and philanthropists.

Book excerpt: A Magic Carpet Ride is more than just a travel memoir. It is a story within a story about personal journeys as well as travel journeys. Of the many themes, the strongest is the author's rediscovery of her mother's spirit while traveling "Mother Earth." A cosmic theme unfolds, as well as a theme of preparing for the empty nest. The first generation Greek American author describes what it is like to take her own children back to her ancestral homeland to discover the essence of their roots, much like the author did in her childhood trips to Greece. Over 20 countries are described in A Magic Carpet Ride, as well as an educational unit that the author and her three sons designed to build their own trip itineraries and research components. This book is about travel, history, love, pain, goals, fears, risk, adventure, humor, understanding, letting go and faith. Come take a magic carpet ride!

Book excerpt: The Silk Road conjures images of the exotic and the unknown. Most travellers simply pass along it. Brit Chris Alexander chose to live there. Ostensibly writing a guidebook, Alexander found life at the heart of the glittering madrassahs, mosques and minarets of the walled city of Khiva - a remote desert oasis in Uzbekistan - immensely alluring, and stayed. Immersing himself in the language and rich cultural traditions Alexander discovers a world torn between Marx and Mohammed - a place where veils and vodka, pork and polygamy freely mingle - against a backdrop of forgotten carpet designs, crumbling but magnificent Islamic architecture and scenes drawn straight from "The Arabian Nights". Accompanied by a large green parrot, a ginger cat and his adoptive Uzbek family, Alexander recounts his efforts to rediscover the lost art of traditional weaving and dyeing, and the process establishing a self-sufficient carpet workshop, employing local women and disabled people to train as apprentices. A Carpet Ride to Khiva sees Alexander being stripped naked at a former Soviet youth camp, crawling through silkworm droppings in an attempt to record their life-cycle, holed up in the British Museum discovering carpet designs dormant for half a millennia, tackling a carpet-thieving mayor, distinguishing natural dyes from sacks of opium in Northern Afghanistan, bluffing his way through an impromptu version of "My Heart Will Go On" for national Uzbek TV and seeking sanctuary as an anti-Western riot consumed the Kabul carpet bazaar. It is an unforgettable true travel story of a journey to the heart of the unknown and the unexpected friendship one man found there.

Book Synopsis My Magic Carpet of Films by : Dennis "Micky" Moore
Download or read book My Magic Carpet of Films written by Dennis "Micky" Moore and published by . This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his introduction: A ride on a magic carpet is a wonderful thing. It allows you to see the past, the present and takes you into the future. It can give you new perspectives, offer up lessons and provide you with wild adventures. A magic carpet can give you a passport to almost anywhere and so it is with my magic carpet of films. My journey started when I was eighteen months old, in 1916, and continues right up into the 21st Century. It has made it possible for me to meet and work with people from all walks of the motion picture industry. It has taken me to many wonderful places around the globe. It has provided me with a career that extends from the silent days of films, called flicks, to the present era of blockbusters and high tech special effects movies. During this time, I have seen the silent films become talkies and talkies give way to surround-sound. I have seen picture shows go from black and white to color, from ten minute one-reelers to three-hour epics. I have seen film change from celluloid to digital and cameras go from hand-cranked to computerized. I have seen movies presented on a single screen enhanced by organ music give way to multiplexes and home theaters with THX. I have seen movies stars' careers rise and fall and the emphasis on celebrities in our culture. I have seen directors become as famous as their leading actors. I have seen the cost of a movie ticket go from 5 cents to over $10 and box office grosses now reported in the news along with the weather report. A lot has changed in the motion picture industry during my lifetime-good and bad-but one thing remained constant, my love of what I have done. Perhaps it was my destiny, a combination of fate and timing, an early start in the business and my adventurous attitude, that gave me an opportunity to work with some of the most talented individuals in the business and kept me an active part of the industry for so many years. But how do I share with you my story that spans nine decades? Perhaps, to keep things in perspective, let's go back in time on my magic carpet to the beginning.
