Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Vol. 32: Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs; 1866 Comparing this summary of the season with the last and previous years, we find that the winter of 1864 - 5 was above the average for temperature, with no extremes of cold, the lowest being 2 below zero; the uniformity of temperature was very remarkable. Though but very little snow fell, - at no time we think exceeding four inches, - yet the ground was well covered from December 8th till spring. The month of March, usually accompanied with keen cutting winds, and sometimes a very low temperature, was mild and favorable. There were fewer extremes of temperature than often occur during our winters. The general characteristics of the year might be classed as a mild winter, a warm and favorable spring, a dry and hot summer, and a mild autumn - somewhat similar to that of 1864; indeed, it is rare to find two seasons so much alike to follow in succession. The summer was as dry as that of 1864, but the drought commenced earlier that year than in 1865, and owing probably to the liberal rains of April and May, vegetation suffered less the last year than in 1864.
