A Retrospective View of the Progress of Horticulture in the United States during the year 1847. By the editor. After four successive years of unusual drought in the Eastern States, that of 1847 was one of more than the average of moisture; vegetation of all kinds has been vigorous, rapid and healthy: crops have been abundant and good, and, with the exception of the still-continued potato rot, no season could yield a richer harvest. Fruit trees of all kinds have made a remarkably fine growth, and, though the fall was protracted and mild unusually late, the wood ripened well, and the promise of fruit another season is excellent. January last was a rather mild and favorable month, with but little unpleasant weather, and with scarcely any snow. February was ushered in with snow, continued variable with more snow, and the last week of the month was severely cold. March was a rather cold month; the first week was pleasant and mild, but, up to the 22d, it continued steadily cold, and the last week was unusually severe for the season. April opened more severe than we have known it for several years; on the 1st, the thermometer stood at only 10°. It continued quite cold and unpleasant up to the middle of the month, at which time the frost was not out of the ground sufficiently to plough: it remained unusually cool to the end of the month. The first week in May was exceedingly cool, but warm weather succeeded, and, on the 10th, peaches were in bloom in warm situations; on the 15th, pears were in bloom, and, on the 26th, the apples were in full flower. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1859, Vol. 25 The year just passed has not been signalized by that gen eral enthusiasm in regard to horticultural progress which had marked those which preceded it. The depression of trade and manufactures throughout the country has had a sensible effect upon the cultivation of the arts and sciences, and more especially upon that science which contributes in so great a degree to the luxuries, rather than the necessities, of life. Not only do such derangements in the commercial world affect the pecuniary means of the people, and compel them to cut off the expenditure of their resources in the completion of beautiful gardens and grounds, but they absorb so much of their' attention that, for a time, all the pleasures arising from their possession are neglected or forgotten, and the latent taste, just being developed, is lost, perhaps, not again to be renewed. Such, to a certain extent, has been the case the past year; but few beautiful suburban dwellings have been erected, few fine gardens laid out, few greenhouses and graperies constructed, and few grounds richly ornamented and planted, compared with preceding years; and though the year closed with more interest in horticulture than it opened, there has not been that zeal and real interest prevalent which the ardent lover of rural improvement could wish to record. All this, however, we trust is but transient, to be followed with a revival of business everywhere, with a deeper interest in horticultural advancement than our country has yet witnessed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1855, Vol. 21 In giving a brief summary of the progress of Horticulture in the United States, from year to year, we do not expect to bring forward a great deal that is new. There is, indeed, very little yearly added to our stock of knowledge which may be considered new; and if we confined ourselves to this, we should not have much to say. Our object is rather to bring together, in one view, the general progress of Horticultural science and Rural art, during the year; to show what have been the subjects that have attracted the attention of the horticultural world; to recapitulate some of the more important results which have been accomplished; and to suggest to cultivators such things as to us appear deserving of their especial attention. Viewed in this light, we believe our annual summaries will be found as interesting as anything we could offer to our readers. The year 1854 will long be remembered for the severity of the winter and the drought of the summer; both unusual even in our variable seasons, and only of rare occurrence to an equal extent. The disastrous effects of the cold were not perceived till late in the season, when in some parts of the country, particularly in Western N. Y., pears on the quince died in considerable numbers. In Massachusetts, however we have not heard of any such ill effects from the cold; but in Maine much damage was experienced, which it will take a long time to make good. The drought was so severe that many trees were excessively injured, and some quite destroyed; even large pines, on some of our light, sandy soils, were literally dried up, root and branch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Vol. 32: Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs; 1866 Comparing this summary of the season with the last and previous years, we find that the winter of 1864 - 5 was above the average for temperature, with no extremes of cold, the lowest being 2 below zero; the uniformity of temperature was very remarkable. Though but very little snow fell, - at no time we think exceeding four inches, - yet the ground was well covered from December 8th till spring. The month of March, usually accompanied with keen cutting winds, and sometimes a very low temperature, was mild and favorable. There were fewer extremes of temperature than often occur during our winters. The general characteristics of the year might be classed as a mild winter, a warm and favorable spring, a dry and hot summer, and a mild autumn - somewhat similar to that of 1864; indeed, it is rare to find two seasons so much alike to follow in succession. The summer was as dry as that of 1864, but the drought commenced earlier that year than in 1865, and owing probably to the liberal rains of April and May, vegetation suffered less the last year than in 1864. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paxton's Magazine of Botany, and Register of Flowering Plants, 1848, Vol. 14 In the present volume scientific subjects occupy a prominent position. Amongst these may be mentioned articles on Temperature, Meteorology, Characteristics of the Seasons, Winter Repose of Plants, and Functions of Foliage. The practical directions also are liberally interspersed, especially relative to such plants as are considered difficult to cultivate; indeed, it has been our aim to blend Science and Art so intimately together that reasons for every direction will be apparent to all our readers. And as it is our earnest wish to maintain inviolable that good feeling and mutual understanding which has for so many years been established, we shall always feel the greatest pleasure in availing ourselves of every facility for rendering the Magazine of Botany still more extensively useful: and thus relying upon a continuation of the kindness which has hitherto been so liberally bestowed, we again commence our labours with renew ed energy and delight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1850, Vol. 16: Vol. Vi, New Series It is somewhat remarkable that the failure of the fruit crop, the last year, should have been so general. We con versed with gentlemen from almost every State in the Union, at the Pomological Conventions, last autumn, and they all complained of the scarcity of fruit, - particularly of apples and pears. It is the more remarkable, from the fact that the failure was not produced by the same causes. In the south and west, late spring frosts destroyed the blossoms. The principal supply of apples has been obtained from northern New York, and Maine, where the crop was nearly an average one. Peaches were abundant in high and ex posed localities, throughout the State. The crop of grapes was large and excellent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, Vol. 8: And All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1842 The taste for horticulture continues to increase throughout the country with much rapidity, and new gardens, villa residences, and commercial establishments for the sale of nursery productions, are every where increasing. From the great extent of territory over which the gardening operations of this country are spread, the rapidity with which improvement has taken place cannot be so easily perceived: if they were all reduced to an extent of surface within the compass of that of England, what is accomplished every year would astonish the most accurate observer. But scattered over twenty-six States, and comprising an area of two millions of square miles, it is scarcely possible to form an accurate opinion of the advancement of horticulture in this country. After the detailed notices which have appeared in our last volume, upon the gardens and state of gardening in New York and Philadelphia, and with the continuation of the same article, which will appear in the succeeding numbers of the Magazine, giving the results of our tour in Baltimore and Washington, there will be less for us to say at this time, without in some degree repeating what we have already advanced. We shall therefore, as briefly as possible, note down the more important improvements which have marked the progress of horticulture for 1841, referring, as occasion may require, to the various articles and papers which have appeared in the past volume. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
