Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1855, Vol. 21 In giving a brief summary of the progress of Horticulture in the United States, from year to year, we do not expect to bring forward a great deal that is new. There is, indeed, very little yearly added to our stock of knowledge which may be considered new; and if we confined ourselves to this, we should not have much to say. Our object is rather to bring together, in one view, the general progress of Horticultural science and Rural art, during the year; to show what have been the subjects that have attracted the attention of the horticultural world; to recapitulate some of the more important results which have been accomplished; and to suggest to cultivators such things as to us appear deserving of their especial attention. Viewed in this light, we believe our annual summaries will be found as interesting as anything we could offer to our readers. The year 1854 will long be remembered for the severity of the winter and the drought of the summer; both unusual even in our variable seasons, and only of rare occurrence to an equal extent. The disastrous effects of the cold were not perceived till late in the season, when in some parts of the country, particularly in Western N. Y., pears on the quince died in considerable numbers. In Massachusetts, however we have not heard of any such ill effects from the cold; but in Maine much damage was experienced, which it will take a long time to make good. The drought was so severe that many trees were excessively injured, and some quite destroyed; even large pines, on some of our light, sandy soils, were literally dried up, root and branch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1859, Vol. 25 The year just passed has not been signalized by that general enthusiasm in regard to horticultural progress which had marked those which preceded it. The depression of trade and manufactures throughout the country has had a sensible effect upon the cultivation of the arts and sciences, and more especially upon that science which contributes in so great a degree to the luxuries, rather than the necessities, of life. Not only do such derangements in the commercial world affect the pecuniary means of the people, and compel them to cut off the expenditure of their resources in the completion of beautiful gardens and grounds, but they absorb so much of their attention that, for a time, all the pleasures arising from their possession are neglected or forgotten, and the latent taste, just being developed, is lost, perhaps, not again to be renewed. Such, to a certain extent, has been the case the past year; but few beautiful suburban dwellings have been erected, few fine gardens laid out, few greenhouses and graperies constructed, and few grounds richly ornamented and planted, compared with preceding years; and though the year closed with more interest in horticulture than it opened, there has not been that zeal and real interest prevalent which the ardent lover of rural improvement could wish to record. All this, however, we trust is but transient, to be followed with a revival of business everywhere, with a deeper interest in horticultural advancement than our country has yet witnessed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1857, Vol. 23 The horticultural progress of the year, though not pre senting any prominent or marked improvements, has, not withstanding, been such as to gratify all who are the least interested in a science so eminently conducive to the luxu ries, the enjoyment, and even the comfort of so large a class of the community. Our pages have chronicled everything worthy of especial note, and to them we must refer our readers for a detail of what has been accomplished. Some general hints and incidental information, as well as random suggestions in regard to the future, we now embrace the opportunity to present in our brief summary of the year. First, in regard to the season, we give a condensed ao count, which, as compared with previous ones, may not be without its value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1850, Vol. 16: Vol. Vi, New Series It is somewhat remarkable that the failure of the fruit crop, the last year, should have been so general. We con versed with gentlemen from almost every State in the Union, at the Pomological Conventions, last autumn, and they all complained of the scarcity of fruit, - particularly of apples and pears. It is the more remarkable, from the fact that the failure was not produced by the same causes. In the south and west, late spring frosts destroyed the blossoms. The principal supply of apples has been obtained from northern New York, and Maine, where the crop was nearly an average one. Peaches were abundant in high and ex posed localities, throughout the State. The crop of grapes was large and excellent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1839, Vol. 5 In the Fifth Volume of the Magazine, will be found a greater amount of original information than has yet appeared in any of the previous volumes. One principal object of the Magazine was to offer a medium through which amateurs and practical gardeners might communicate their ideas to each other; and the excellent articles which have appeared in this volume, show how far this purpose has been accomplished. The Fifth Volume contains a larger number of engravings than any of the preceding; one or more having appeared in nearly every number; embracing also a variety of subjects. Our own article, entitled a Retrospective View of Horticulture for the last year, has been continued, and contains a full record of the principal improvements for 1838. Several of our subsequent articles we have devoted to the subject of Ornamental Gardening, which is now, we arc happy to state, attracting more attention. Our Notices of New Fruits and Vegetables have been continued, and we have enumerated nearly every tiling new, of importance. The Floricultural Notices, though not so lengthy as in some of our previous volumes, have embraced all the interesting plants introduced or grown in this country. The Miscellaneous Intelligence - of a more varied character than heretofore - has been collected with considerable labor, and much of it will be found important to the practical, as well as the amateur, Horticulturalist. Notwithstanding such an amount of valuable matter has appeared in the five volumes now completed, it is our intention to render the sixth as replete with useful information, in each and every department, as either of those which have preceded it. The subject is by no means exhausted. The objects of the garden are too numerous to be so quickly passed over. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1837, Vol. 3 With the Third Volume we have been induced to change the title of the Magazine: this has been done for several reasons; but principally on account of the various agricultural and horticultural periodicals in the country which have, either for their titles or sub titles, that which we had adopted, - the consequence of which was a tendency to mislead the public in regard to its character, and the true object for which it was established. The alteration, we are highly pleased to learn, has given very general satisfaction to our correspondents and readers. In this Third Volume the principal improvements are the intro duction of the papers upon the new varieties of fruits and vegeta bles, under the heads of Pomological Notices, and Notices of new Culinary Vegetables. In the preparation of the former we have had the valuable assistance of Mr. Manning, of Salem, the well known pomologist, who will continue to give us information re specting all the new kinds of fruits which come under his observa tion; we have had, also, the assistance of other gentlemen and amateurs. For the latter we have relied mainly upon our own re sources, h0ping, however, in future, to have the aid of those of our friends who feel interested in this important branch of garden ing. Our Floricultural Notices in this volume have been given with considerable care, and they will be found to embrace many new and pleasing subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1851, Vol. 30 A Mild and variable winter, a cool and wet summer, and a warm and pleasant autumn, have been the prevailing characteristics of the weather for the year. After the mild December of 1849, (excepting the last week,) January commenced with the temperature at zero. Mild weather, however, soon followed, and on the 8th and 9th, snow fell to the depth of seven inches: this was succeeded by a cold easterly rain on the 11th, with fine weather up to 18th, when more rain fell, succeeded with the light snow: the 22d and 25th were also rainy. They were followed with fine, mild weather until the 31st, when the thermometer again sunk to zero. February was much more variable, as well as colder. Rain fell on the 2d, carrying off nearly all the snow. The 4th and 5th were cold, and on the 6th the mercury reached 8° below zero, the lowest point during the winter. The 7th was squally, with snow. Very mild weather followed, with the thermometer 56° at noon on the 11th, - every vestige of snow gone. A heavy easterly rain set in on the 14th, and the 16th was again cool. Mild and mostly pleasant weather ended the month. More snow fell in March in either of the previous months. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1846, Vol. 11 The present Volume completes the Second of the New Series, and the Twelfth of the entire work. In this volume, having brought to a close our series of articles upon European Gardens and Gardening, we have found more room to devote to our correspondents, and also to our pomological articles. Some excellent papers have been contributed, on Pomology, by our correspondent, Mr. Humrickhouse, particularly in relation to an uniform nomenclature for fruits, (p. 47.) We have brought up our Notices of New Fruits, and have also given the descriptions and drawings of eighteen varieties of peal's, embracing some new, very little known, and choice kinds. Our Flori-cultural articles have not been quite so numerous and varied as in some of the preceding volumes, but we shall devote more attention to this department in the next volume. The cultivation of fruit seems to be the absorbing interest, and we have endeavored to offer as much information upon the subject as possible. Our first article on Ornamental Trees will be found in the present volume, (p. 58,) and it may he taken as an example of what we intend to accomplish hereafter. One of the most valuable papers is that upon the Cultivation of the Grape in what arc termed Cold-houses, by Mr. Russell; in connection with the descriptions and engravings of Mr. Gray's Graperies, we may view it as one of the most important we have ever published. The curvilinear plan of building is admirably adapted to graperies, and we are gratified to find so many gentlemen have already adopted it. If to this plan, the Polmaise mode of heating can be applied successfully in our climate, grapes may be produced from June to December, in the greatest perfection. The Reviews, and the Miscellaneous Intelligence, aflord a variety of useful information. A new feature has been introduced, by which questions upon every department of Horticulture will be fully answered; and this we hope to make highly instructive to every reader. And now, again, we appeal to all lovers of the science, especially in New England, to give us their aid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1852, Vol. 18 March continued cool and backward, and was accompanied by more rains and snows, at least in number, than either of the preceding months. No less than fourteen of the thirty one days were cloudy, with rain or snow. On the 14th, the thermometer was at and the weather fine the next fine day was on the 22d; the light snows which had fallen then began to thaw rapidly, and on the 27th all traces of them were gone, with but an inch or two of frost. Up to the close of the month it continued favorable. April commenced with fine weather, with but one rainy day up to the 15th. A northeast storm of great severity then set in, and continued up to the 22d. After which it was fine again, with cool northerly and easterly winds to the close of the month. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, and All Useful Discoveries and Improvements in Rural Affairs, 1864, Vol. 30 The year may be characterized as an open and variable winter, a cool spring, a warm and wet summer, and a fine warm autumn. Strawberries, and the smaller fruits, were very abundant, except that the former suffered during a fort night of dry weather just at the critical season. Grapes were fine, and ripened everywhere; the frosts of September not being severe enough to do any injury.
