Book excerpt: This graphic novel is meant to be a portrait of the Nuragic civilization which, at the time the novel is set, in 1222 BC, was the most advanced one in the western Mediterranean. Nuragic people did not leave any writings or, at least, they did not come to us. Nevertheless, they erected towers up to twenty meters tall, with tholos domes and helicoidal staircases inside their cyclopean stone walls. Cyclopean stone walls that just bear a close resemblance to the ones of the Greek cities of Tiryns and Mycenae, the cradle of the Mycenaean civilization, coeval with the Nuragic one. Nuragic architecture had something sensational, and something extraordinary was also its spread in the island of silver veins. But what is the ancient link between Lydia and Sardinia? Let us just think about the name of the Lydian capital, Sardis, and how, in the first volume of “The Histories”, Herodotus already wrote about the famine which struck that region and its grievous consequences during the reign of Atys… In this volume Fish, a Nuragic boy of humble origins, makes his first appearance. Because of a tragic event he witnesses, he is suddenly catapulted into a venture seemingly bigger than him: the search of a mysterious treasure brought to Sardinia by some Lydian settlers. But unexpected qualities will be shown by the boy faced with the inevitable adversities and he will discover that his search is heading towards another treasure that all of us have close at hand, but that often we lose sight of… ourselves!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theft of the numerous archaeological artifacts which comprise the so-called Lydian Hoard (Karun Hazineleri or Karun Treasure, in Turkish) is legendary. So too is its discovery, the lawsuit which embroiled the Republic of Turkey and the all powerful Metropolitan Museum of Art for almost six years, and the surprising problems encountered after the treasure had been repatriated to Turkey. With the possible exception of the exploration of the tomb of Tutankhamon, no other archaeological discovery can compete with the Lydian Hoard for its mystique and intrigue. No other archaeological discovery has influenced and destroyed as many lives as the Lydian Hoard. Chasing The Golden Hoard follows the lives of a Turkish family living on the outskirts of the modern town of Usak in southwestern Turkey as they accidentally discover an unplundered Sixth Century B.C. tomb, dating from the reign of Lydian king Croesus (Karun, in Turkish).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two whole years were needed to accomplish this fresco about the Nuragic civilization which, at the time the novel has been set, 1222 B.C., was the most advanced one throughout the western Mediterranean Sea.Coeval with the Mycenaean civilization, remarkable are their cultural, religious and architectonic points of contact: one for all the Nuraghes' tholos shaped domes equal to Agamemnon's tomb, not mentioning the striking inner passageways which seem to be transported from the cyclopean stone walls of Tiryns in the Peloponnese. The scenario is a Sardinia island quite different from now, which boasted an abundance of wooded lands, wildlife and spring waters. Marvelous land, such as the Phantom's Bangalla or Flash's Mongo, it exists, in our imagination. Like them, it represents a world apart, and it gets real, in our heart. But what's the ancient link between Lydia and Sardinia? Let's just think about the name of the Lydian capital, Sardis, and how Herodotus, in the first volume of his “The Histories”, already wrote about the grievous famine and its consequences during the reign of Atys…Discover the magic adventures of Fish and the many “companions” on his journey, who might possibly be some Nuragic bronze statues which have been infused with the vital sap, in this classic styled graphic novel, which will give you true enjoyment thanks to its wide page drawings.Let yourself get carried away by the turn of events that follow an endless hunting, the search of a treasure that all of us have close at hand, but that often we lose sight of…
Download or read book Loot written by Sharon Waxman and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journey across four continents to the heart of the conflict over who should own the great works of ancient art Why are the Elgin Marbles in London and not on the Acropolis? Why do there seem to be as many mummies in France as there are in Egypt? Why are so many Etruscan masterworks in America? For the past two centuries, the West has been plundering the treasures of the ancient world to fill its great museums, but in recent years, the countries where ancient civilizations originated have begun to push back, taking museums to court, prosecuting curators, and threatening to force the return of these priceless objects. Where do these treasures rightly belong? Sharon Waxman, a former culture reporter for The New York Times and a longtime foreign correspondent, brings us inside this high-stakes conflict, examining the implications for the preservation of the objects themselves and for how we understand our shared cultural heritage. Her journey takes readers from the great cities of Europe and America to Egypt, Turkey, Greece, and Italy, as these countries face down the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum, and the J. Paul Getty Museum. She also introduces a cast of determined and implacable characters whose battles may strip these museums of some of their most cherished treasures. For readers who are fascinated by antiquity, who love to frequent museums, and who believe in the value of cultural exchange, Loot opens a new window on an enduring conflict.

Download or read book The Last King of Lydia written by Tim Leach and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A defeated king stands on top of a pyre. His conqueror, the Persian ruler Cyrus, signals to his guards; they step forward and touch flaming torches to the dry wood. Croesus, once the wealthiest man of the ancient world, is to be burned alive. As he watches the flames catch, Croesus thinks back over his life. He remembers the time he asked the old Athenian philosopher, Solon, who was the happiest man in the world. Croesus used to think it was him. But then all his riches could not remove the spear from his dying elder son's chest; could not bring his mute younger son to speak; could not make him as wise as his own chief slave; could not bring his wife's love back; could not prevent his army from being torn apart and his kingdom lost. As the old philosopher had replied, a man's happiness can only be measured when he is dead. The first coils of smoke wrap around Croesus' neck like a noose...

Book excerpt: The author of Hidden History offers a fascinating tour through centuries of buried riches, stolen artifacts, and other true tales of treasure. The allure of treasure has captivated people for centuries. But is it purely a desire for wealth that draws us to tales of hidden riches, or is it also the romantic appeal of uncovering lost ancient artifacts? The stories behind the loss and recovery of ancient treasures often read like historical suspense fiction. In Ancient Treasures, readers discover the true histories of lost hoards, looted archaeological artifacts, and sunken treasures, including: The Sevso Treasure, a hoard of large silver vessels from the late Roman Empire—estimated to be worth $200 million—looted in the 1970s and sold on the black market. The Amber Room, a chamber decoration of amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors, stolen by the Nazis in 1941 and brought to the castle at Königsberg in Russia, from which it disappeared. The fabulous wealth of Roman and Viking hoards buried in the ground for safekeeping, only to be unearthed centuries later by humble metal detectorists. The wrecks of the Spanish treasure fleets, whose New World plunder has been the target of elaborate salvage attempts by modern treasure hunters

Book Synopsis A Pearl in Peril by : Christina Luke
Download or read book A Pearl in Peril written by Christina Luke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as "the Pearl of the Mediterranean," Izmir invokes a city and countryside blessed with good fortune; it is known to many as the homeland of Ephesus, Bergama, and Sardis. Yet, Turkey's third largest city has an especially vexed past. The Greek pursuit of the Megali Idea leveraged Classical history for 19th century political gains, and in so doing also foreshadowed the "Asia Minor Catastrophe." Princeton University's work at Sardis played into the duplicitous agendas of western archaeologists, learned societies, and diplomats seeking to structure heritage policy and international regulations in their favor, from the 1919 Paris Peace Conference to the League of Nations. A Pearl in Peril reveals the voices of those on the ground. It also explores how Howard Crosby Butler, William Hepburn Buckler, and William Berry penetrated the inner circle of world leaders, including Woodrow Wilson, Lloyd George, and Eleftherios Venizelos. On the smoldering ashes of Anatolia's scorched earth, foreign intervention continued apace with plans for large-scale development. A Pearl in Peril tackles the untold story of Julian Huxley's admiration of the US Tennessee Valley Authority's "principals of persuasion" in the context of the industrial landscapes and pursuit of modernity in the Aegean. The promise of UNESCO, too, brought diplomacy dollars deployed to foster "mutual understanding" through preservation programs at Sardis. Yet, from this same pot of money came support for "open intelligence" at the international fairs held in Izmir's Kültürpark, a turnkey battleground of the Cold War. Ironically, it was UNESCO's colossal Abu Simbel project in Egypt that led the US to abandon their preservation initiatives in Turkey. Five decades on, groves of organic olives, marble quarries and gold mines not only threaten the erasure of sacred landscapes, but also ensure the livelihood of local communities. Ultimately, A Pearl in Peril offers a bold assessment of diplomatic practice, perspectives of contemporary heritage, and the challenges of unprecedented expansion of city and countryside.
