Book Synopsis I Love You Too Much by : Alicia Drake
Download or read book I Love You Too Much written by Alicia Drake and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I knew I was in Paris, I knew that was the Seine beneath me, the sky above, but when I looked around for help, the grand apartment buildings of the Quai Voltaire stared back at me, indifferent. Alicia Drake, author of the critically acclaimed biography The Beautiful Fall, evokes contemporary life in the City of Lights lavishness of Edward St. Aubyn and the sophistication of Julia Pierpont's Among Ten Thousand Things. I Love You Too Much is a novel of extraordinary intelligence and heart, a devastating coming of age story told from the sidelines of Parisian perfection. In the sixth arrondissement everything is perfect and everyone is lonely. This is the Paris of thirteen-year-old Paul. Shy and unloved, he quietly observes the lives of the self-involved grown-ups around him: his glamorous Maman, Séverine, her younger musician lover, Gabriel, and his fitness-obsessed Papa, Philippe. Always overlooked, it's only a matter of time before Paul witnesses something that he's not supposed to see... Seeking solace in an unlikely friendship with rebellious classmate Scarlett and succumbing to the temptation of the numerous patisseries in his elegant neighborhood, Paul searches for unconditional love. But what will he do if he can't find it?

Download or read book Ah-Ha to Zig-Zag written by Maira Kalman and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maira Kalman’s exuberant illustrations and humorous commentary bring design history to life in this inspired ABC book that celebrates thirty-one objects from the Cooper Hewitt, in time for its long-awaited reopening. "A. Ah-ha! There you Are." begins Maira Kalman’s joyfully illustrated romp through the treasures of Cooper Hewitt’s design collection. With her signature wit and warm humor, Kalman’s ABC book introduces children and adults to the myriad ways design touches our lives. Posing the question "If you were starting a museum, what would you put in your collection?", Kalman encourages the reader to put pen to paper and send in personal letters—an intimate, interactive gesture to top off her unique tour of the world of design. Objects ranging from a thirteenth-century silk thinking cap to 1889 tin slippers with bows, all the way to Gerrit Rietveld’s Zig-Zag chair are brought to colorful life. Kalman’s hand-lettered text is whimsical and universal in turns, drawing lessons as easily from a worn old boot as a masterpiece of midcentury modernism. Irresistibly, we are led to agree, "Everything is design."

Download or read book Concrete written by Peter Collins and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collins provides a thorough history of the new nineteenth century material and goes on to examine the theories on its architectural expression, focussing on determining role of the reinforced concrete frame. He argues that Perret provides the first rational and effective expression of classical principles in modern construction. Published in 1959 and out of print since 1975, this new edition of Concrete includes a foreword by Kenneth Frampton, a scholarly introduction by Réjean Legault, and several additional essays on Perret by Peter Collins. From the Foreword by Kenneth Frampton: "Concrete remains a valuable historical text that in many respects has never been given its due. It is an unmatched pioneering history of the development of reinforced concrete up to 1914. It records and analyses the densely articulated, if provincial, English debate with respect to the aesthetic challenge posed by the increasing popularity of concrete from around 1870 onwards. Finally, until very recently it was the only readily available monograph on Auguste Perret in English. In this regard it is particularly valuable as a thorough and perceptive assessment of Perret's life and career, one that still stands as a point of departure for all current attempts to situate this seminal architect within the wider trajectory of twentieth-century culture."
Download or read book Paris to the Moon written by Adam Gopnik and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1995, Adam Gopnik and his wife, and their infant son left the familiar comforts and hassles of New York for the urbane glamour of Paris. Charmed by the beauties of the city, Gopnik set out to experience for himself the spirit and romance that has so captivated American writers throughout the Twentieth century. In the grand tradition of Stein and Hemingway, Gopnik planned to walk the paths of the Tuilleries, to enjoy philosophical discussion in cafes in short, to lead the fabled life of an American in Paris. Of course, as readers of Gopnik's beloved 'Paris Journals' in the New Yorker know, there was also the matter of raising a child and carrying on with everyday, not so fabled life. Evenings with French intellectuals precede middle-of-the night baby feedings; afternoons are filled with trips to the Musee d'Orsay and pinball games; weekday leftovers are eaten while three star chefs debate a 'culinary crisis'. With singular wit and insight, Gopnik manages to weave the magical with the mundane in a wholly delightful book.

Book Synopsis Paris in the Year 2000 by : Tony Moilin
Download or read book Paris in the Year 2000 written by Tony Moilin and published by Hollywood Comics. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paris in the Year 2000 by Doctor Tony Moilin was published in 1869. A year later, Moilin was charged with involvement in a plot to assassinate Napoleon III and sentenced to prison for five years. He was liberated during the Prussians' siege of Paris, and enlisted in the National Guard as a surgeon. When the Commune took control of Paris, Moilin agreed to accept the position of Mayor of the 6th arrondissement. He was taken prisoner when the Commune fell, court-martialed, ostensibly for having accepted the administrative post, and summarily executed by firing-squad. He was thirty-nine years old. The publication of Paris in the Year 2000 was likely a factorin prompting the French authorities to trump up a charge and then execute Moilin, for scrupulous accounts of ideal socialist societies such as the one described in this book often horrify and terrify readers opposed to them, sometimes arousing an uncommonly violent indignation.
