Book excerpt: THE LULL-A-BABY SLEEP GUIDE Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems: Helping Your Child Develop Good Sleep Practices (Part 3) Baby sleep training is pretty much simple— it’s about getting your baby to sleep. But it does not, and will not, end there. After your baby has gone to dreamland, there are instances when he’ll wake up in the middle of the night, and then won’t go to sleep, no matter how much you beg for him to do it. Baby sleep training is getting your baby to sleep, and helping him stay asleep through the night. Whether you are pregnant, a young parent or an experienced one who wants to resemble all the peculiarities of early motherhood, anyone will benefit and find something useful for him/herself. Some babies will be able to develop a regular sleeping habit with little help. Others will have a difficult time. During those difficult times, you’ll need help. And this book will be your guidance. Don’t worry, once your baby gets used to a certain routine, he’ll be able to stick to it. It is just a matter of starting it right, When can you incorporate baby sleep training? Newborn will typically have no problems getting sleep. All they will be doing day in and day out is sleep because they are still trying to adjust to the outside world. During these times, when the baby cries, be sure to be immediately at his side. This will help him develop trust, knowing that whenever something is wrong, someone will be there to tend to him. You will find there more information about rituals, sleeping techniques, before sleeping games and a great deal of other useful secrets for young parents. The answers will be composed by me as a psychologist, not a mom, this time.

Book excerpt: THE LULL-A-BABY SLEEP GUIDE: AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO IMPROVING A CHILD’S SLEEP QUALITY FOR BETTER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT Sleep troubles come in many forms, but the four-month sleep regression of a baby can be easily distinguished from other issues if parents know what to look for. Newborns wake only when they are done sleeping or when they have a competing need, such as hunger, discomfort, or needing a diaper change. Around the third or fourth month, everything changes, and parents may find that their babies who once spent six to nine hours asleep at night are now waking every one to two! Those deep, dark hours of the night can be very painful. However, parents should also understand how magical, beautiful, and joyful this time of their life can be, too. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Bryan of Mt. Lebanon, Louisiana was the consummate idealist. He had a forward-looking outlook. Slavery was an anachronism. In 1856, five years before the war, he offered emancipation to all 97 on his plantation, hired a teacher, deeded land, shared profits, and encouraged entrepreneurs. The Civil War devastated the South, but the war never reached his home. When Union occupiers arrived in Mt. Lebanon a decade later, they were astounded to find Bryan's experiment fully implemented. Former slaves could not only “read, write, and cipher,” they were landowners engaged in a trade, and some were even bilingual. Bryan's objective was to facilitate the “conveyance” of his peaceful society from pre-war to post-war America. He saw no reason why he could not achieve this goal. Union occupiers envisioned a plethora of beneficial propaganda, but Bryan declined to be used by aggressive new politicians who demanded his cooperation to further their agenda. After the Confederate surrender, Richard Bryan, his family, their hired hands, the people, and a wounded Yankee deserter his young sons had stumbled upon in the woods and brought home with them, found themselves at the mercy of a corrupt Governor, political hacks, petty tyrants, and remorseless convicts in military uniform. Not just rustlers but occupying troops would frequently raid farms. Often, they’d steal entire harvests. If you resisted the men in uniform, they might hang you and burn your place down out of spite. There was no legal recourse against the government. Food became scarce, hard money even more so. “Injun Grass” as it was known to those who smoked it, grew wild on their land. It was good quality, so they’d periodically harvest it and offer little poke bags of cannabis sativa for sale to visitors who were passing through on the stagecoach. Occasionally they’d even sell some to soldiers. Every penny counted. They tightened their belts, quietly bartered for weapons, secretly manufactured ammunition, and killed in self-defense when they were faced with no other choice. Their joint goal was survival. Some of them would make it. What transpired across the South might today be equated to legal, as well as militarized police brutality by occupying forces. The experience of all, regardless of color, who lived through this traumatic and tumultuous time in history, burned itself deeply into America’s collective psyche.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The award-winning author of The Yellow Birds returns with an extraordinary debut poetry collection. National Book Award finalist, Iraq war veteran, novelist and poet Kevin Powers creates a deeply affecting portrait of a life shaped by war. Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting captures the many moments that comprise a soldier's life: driving down the Texas highway; waiting for the unknown in the dry Iraq heat; writing a love letter; listening to a mother recount her dreams. Written with evocative language and discernment, Powers's poetry strives to make sense of the war and its echoes through human experience. Just as The Yellow Birds was hailed as the "first literary masterpiece produced by the Iraq war," this collection will make its mark as a powerful, enduring work (Los Angeles Times).

Book excerpt: Only the lull I like. A diary of the common is a story, fictional or real—or both—that takes place in the Barcelona of the 1920’s, where the Barrio Chino was known as a neighbourhood for the immigrant and rejected. But in it, there was a whorehouse named Madame Petit that was a sort of melting pot where all layers of society met, the poor, the rich, the queers and the thieves. When trespassing the moral threshold of this place, a new world would emerge.

Book excerpt: ‘The Lull and the Whirlwind’ is a debut poetry collection that features 116 poems written by the author over a span of three years, covering two different decades. The earliest few poems were written in the 1980s, while the majority of the collection was written in the current decade of the 21st century, marking a distinct separation of four decades. The book provides an intimate look at the world through the poet’s eyes, offering a personal account of his experiences and encounters. The poet draws inspiration from his own thoughts and emotions, and the collection encompasses a wide range of themes, including childhood, adolescence, nature, introspection, romance, fun and frolic, and even antics. The poems are meant to be a transparent portrayal of the poet’s feelings, conveying the bright sunshine, dark and dismal nights, upheavals, and everything he has gone through. The sincerity of the portrayal is evident in the poet’s quest to convey the interplay between the mind and matter, and the element of magic pervades throughout the collection. For readers to fully appreciate the collection, it is recommended that they read the poems at their leisure and take in the printed matter at ease. They can immerse themselves in the plethora of emotions conveyed by the poems, and be swept off their feet by the sheer depth and intensity of the writing.

There's "splash-a- bye" time in the bathtub with rubber-duck squeaks and bubble-beard cheeks; "rock-a-bye" time where the whole family sings silly songs together; "hush-a-bye" time with Dad reading and the moon watching from high above; and finally, "Lull-a-bye" time again, as the child gently eases into sleep. With its lilting read-aloud rhythm and Hideko Takahashi's warm, comforting illustrations, Lull-a-Bye, Little Oneis a celebration of the love a family shares at bedtime. Young readers will want to hear this book every night as they drift into slumbers.

Book excerpt: Khmer Concrete' investigates what remains of Cambodia?s post-independence architectural heritage and how it still retains its poetic power in contemporary Cambodia. The development of an independent intellectual and cultural elite was seen as crucial to maintaining Cambodia?s international status and independence in the years after 1953. In addition to architecture, a vibrant art and culture scene developed which sought to express itself on the international stage. All this came to an end, however, when the Khmer Rouge seized power and laid waste to the countryside and cities of Cambodia between 1975 and 1980. Khmer Concrete explores the forgotten legacy of these buildings and their place in modern Cambodia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Count the number of times you’ve said “no” to an idea. Whether you inadvertently put out a spark of brilliance or nixed a nonstarter, your response took away someone else’s opportunity to feel heard. And that’s an innovation killer. No one knows this truth better than improv expert Karen Hough. Go With It: Embrace the Unexpected to Drive Change brings you Hough’s discoveries from the front lines of innovation. She has seen how business innovators deal with dichotomy by preparing, playing, and thinking upside down. Improv troupes succeed on stage because they apply the “Yes, and” principle. Whatever the first person says, the next person affirms and adds to it. But this practice isn’t limited to onstage brilliance—corporate teams caught up in old patterns of thought and action can learn to improvise and innovate, too. Pharmaceutical scientists who know how to improvise can accelerate their fuzzy front-end work on new drugs. Technologists who are masters of going with it know how to successfully bring their breakthroughs to market. Executives who use improv techniques get their teams working and innovating together. Their stories fill this book. And they emphasize that it’s the process of listening, agreeing, and discussing an idea that’s monumentally important. Hough shows you that anyone can learn to be more creative and innovative. It just takes flexibility, humor, and focus—that’s improv.
