Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ...self, he requires assistance that he may pass out from the Great Illusion. After the Soul of man becomes encased in the form of the physical, or natural world, and vibrating in that vibration, he having lost his way, requires guidance and assistance that he may find his way out from this state; the Ancients have called it the, "Forest of Illusion," or, "Maya"; and some call it the, "Mist." We read in Genesis of the Hebrews Scriptures, "that a mist arose." The Soul of man, as it vibrates in low enough vibration to touch the mist, becomes lost in it; and when he is quickened so the desire becomes evident within him, to escape from it, he knows not the way that will bring him to the open. Here is where man prays; it may at first be the prayer of blind faith to a vague and far away God; but remembering St. Paul, a high Initiate, said "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Man in prayer is setting in operation a law which will bring to him his desired guidance, and assistance. God ever heareth the call of His children, even though it may be a feeble one; if it is unselfish and sincere. The innocent child can utter its prayer in childlike trust and faith, not knowing anything about, if God is far, or near; and it will be answered; the child has met the requirements, --belief; it believes in God and His ability and willingness to hear and answer its prayer, when it expresses its desire. Herein lieth a secret; prayer must be expressed, it matters not if it is silent or audible, although there are times when it is wise, and best, to voice the request or prayer aloud. And at other times it is wise to silently commune with the Father-Mother-God. It is well when...

Book excerpt: The practice of Buddhism is about changing our lives deep at the core. Buddhism calls on us to examine the causes of our suffering in brutal honesty. After making this self-assessment we then take the next step and make the necessary changes so we can free ourselves from the cycle of suffering in ignorance. The essays in the book are short; usually only several hundred words. It is possible to read them quite quickly. That however, is not what I intended and so I have concluded each essay with either some questions for you to consider or suggestions for actions you might decide would be beneficial. You will get the most value out of this book if you take your time and use the essays and the follow-up comments as tools. Use the book sparingly, sampling each essay as if it were a most delicious candy. This book will be of the most value to you if you actually try to use it as a tool for making changes in your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I woke, in the nude, surrounded by empty beer bottles and five naked men, with no idea how I got there". After a childhood accident left her permanently disabled, Tara Gardiner spent decades searching for happiness. For 20 years, she backpacked through North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia, on a fruitless hunt for meaning. The life and soul of every party, ready for any adventure her damaged knee would permit, she lived life to the full. So why were her fleeting moments of joy marred by illness, hangovers, memory gaps, physical and sexual assault - and shame? Finally, in a desperate attempt to avoid the knee replacement her doctors said was essential, Tara tried a new path. Returning to India after 18 years, she swapped drink, drugs and anonymous sex for yoga, study and Tibetan Buddhism. And as she began to find, inside herself, the contentment she sought, a chance encounter in India's poorest state directed her to her life's purpose. Populated with a cast of colourful characters, A Lotus Trail is the story of one woman's quest for self-discovery. It will take you on an inspiring journey from desperation to transformation, and show you that anything is possible.

Book excerpt: This volume deals with the underlying structure of occult teaching for the present era and with those vast cosmic processes reproduced through all areas of life from universe to atom. A large section of the book gives a detailed exposition of Solar Fire, the Fire of Mind, since this is the dominant energy to be understood and controlled during this second solar system. A Treatise on Cosmic Fire provides a compact outline of a scheme of cosmology, philosophy and psychology, and serves as a basic reference and text book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a religion concerned with universal liberation, Zen grew out of a Buddhist worldview very different from the currently prevalent scientific materialism. Indeed, says Taigen Dan Leighton, Zen cannot be fully understood outside of a worldview that sees reality itself as a vital, dynamic agent of awareness and healing. In this book, Leighton explicates that worldview through the writings of the Zen master Eihei D?gen (1200-1253), considered the founder of the Japanese S?t? Zen tradition, which currently enjoys increasing popularity in the West. The Lotus Sutra, arguably the most important Buddhist scripture in East Asia, contains a famous story about bodhisattvas (enlightening beings) who emerge from under the earth to preserve and expound the Lotus teaching in the distant future. The story reveals that the Buddha only appears to pass away, but actually has been practicing, and will continue to do so, over an inconceivably long life span. Leighton traces commentaries on the Lotus Sutra from a range of key East Asian Buddhist thinkers, including Daosheng, Zhiyi, Zhanran, Saigyo, My?e, Nichiren, Hakuin, and Ry?kan. But his main focus is Eihei D?gen, the 13th century Japanese S?t? Zen founder who imported Zen from China, and whose profuse, provocative, and poetic writings are important to the modern expansion of Buddhism to the West. D?gen's use of this sutra expresses the critical role of Mahayana vision and imagination as the context of Zen teaching, and his interpretations of this story furthermore reveal his dynamic worldview of the earth, space, and time themselves as vital agents of spiritual awakening. Leighton argues that D?gen uses the images and metaphors in this story to express his own religious worldview, in which earth, space, and time are lively agents in the bodhisattva project. Broader awareness of D?gen's worldview and its implications, says Leighton, can illuminate the possibilities for contemporary approaches to primary Mahayana concepts and practices.

Book excerpt: Matthieu Ricard trained as a molecular biologist, working in the lab of a Nobel prize—winning scientist, but when he read some Buddhist philosophy, he became drawn to Buddhism. Eventually he left his life in science to study with Tibetan teachers, and he is now a Buddhist monk and translator for the Dalai Lama, living in the Shechen monastery near Kathmandu in Nepal. Trinh Thuan was born into a Buddhist family in Vietnam but became intrigued by the explosion of discoveries in astronomy during the 1960s. He made his way to the prestigious California Institute of Technology to study with some of the biggest names in the field and is now an acclaimed astrophysicist and specialist on how the galaxies formed. When Matthieu Ricard and Trinh Thuan met at an academic conference in the summer of 1997, they began discussing the many remarkable connections between the teachings of Buddhism and the findings of recent science. That conversation grew into an astonishing correspondence exploring a series of fascinating questions. Did the universe have a beginning? Or is our universe one in a series of infinite universes with no end and no beginning? Is the concept of a beginning of time fundamentally flawed? Might our perception of time in fact be an illusion, a phenomenon created in our brains that has no ultimate reality? Is the stunning fine-tuning of the universe, which has produced just the right conditions for life to evolve, a sign that a “principle of creation” is at work in our world? If such a principle of creation undergirds the workings of the universe, what does that tell us about whether or not there is a divine Creator? How does the radical interpretation of reality offered by quantum physics conform to and yet differ from the Buddhist conception of reality? What is consciousness and how did it evolve? Can consciousness exist apart from a brain generating it? The stimulating journey of discovery the authors traveled in their discussions is re-created beautifully in The Quantum and the Lotus, written in the style of a lively dialogue between friends. Both the fundamental teachings of Buddhism and the discoveries of contemporary science are introduced with great clarity, and the reader will be profoundly impressed by the many correspondences between the two streams of thought and revelation. Through the course of their dialogue, the authors reach a remarkable meeting of minds, ultimately offering a vital new understanding of the many ways in which science and Buddhism confirm and complement each other and of the ways in which, as Matthieu Ricard writes, “knowledge of our spirits and knowledge of the world are mutually enlightening and empowering.”
