Book excerpt: Sprinkled with humor, the vignettes of The Lost and Found Collection will open minds and hearts to remarkable possibilities for conquering life’s simple stressors or major struggles. Witness the proof that “it’s never too late to be who you might have been.” Just don’t try to go it alone. Learn how support may come from the kindness of a stranger or helpful coincidences that just might be God acting anonymously. The Lost and Found Collection will clarify the difference between happiness and joy, as well as disclose the mystery of paradoxical joy from adversity. Aspects of the often surprising essays in The Lost and Found Collection are easily identifiable, but the metamorphosis from agnostic to believer will be a personalized, individual experience. Along the way, discover “The Treasure of Hope” that comes from only one source. Each candidly poignant vignette from The Lost and Found Collection reaches a memorably uplifting finale that will leave significant messages to ponder. Highly recommended! The Editorial Board of The Columbia Review “The Lost and Found Collection: The Treasure of Hope” by C.B. Wallis is an inspiring non-fiction work with a strong literary tone and a high spiritual message. Part memoir, part inspirational advice, the book combines deep human insights, rich Christian wisdom, and an authentic voice that shares personal experiences in stories and contemplative memories, poetic and scriptural nuggets, and faith-based witnessing. Much of the book is told in the first person, recounting the author’s experiences that carry relevant messages of overcoming challenges, recovering from calamities, and sustaining hopes for the future. In an eerily appropriate scene, the author recounts the beginning of her spiritual journey as she picked up a new Bible on New Year’s Day and opened it to see the words: “Let there be light!” (Genesis 1:3). Indeed, this book sheds light not only on the author’s eventful life’s journey, but also on life itself and the ways in which the modern world challenges one’s sensibilities and sensitivities. Perhaps the most valuable thread in “The Lost and Found Collection: The Treasure of Hope” is its message of optimism in the face of hardship. The author’s personal journey mirror that of the scriptures’ advice she appropriately quotes: “[…] when troubles comes your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For […] when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” (James 1:2–4.) Drawing on her own life’s trials and tribulations, as well as joys and gifts, the author discusses a wide spectrum of subjects of great relevance to all—fears and worries, love and care, generosity and dignity, mental health and physical illness, adoption and family, friendship and enmity, life and death, and even war and peace, as they apply to survivors and veterans. In summary, “The Lost and Found Collection: The Treasure of Hope” by C.B. Wallis is an uplifting, spiritual memoir, sprinkled with gems of wisdom and faith. Readers will enjoy this book and benefit from it on several levels: It is a fascinating journey of personal growth and empowerment, a series of well-told, memorable stories, intriguing insights into life’s most trying moments, and invaluable guidance when confronted with an unexpected crisis. Highly recommended!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Monday morning in April, a middle-aged writer walks into her living room to water the plants and finds a woman standing beside her potted fig tree. Dressed in a navy blue trench coat and white Nikes, the woman introduces herself as "Mary. Mother of God.... You know. Mary." Instead of a golden robe or a crown, she arrives bearing a practical wheeled suitcase. Weary after two thousand years of adoration and petition, Mary is looking for a little R & R. She's asked in for lunch, and decides to stay a week. As the story of their visit unfolds, so does the story of Mary-one of the most complex and powerful female figures of our time-and her changing image in culture, art, history, as well as the thousands of recorded sightings that have placed her everywhere from a privet hedge to the dented bumper of a Camaro. As this Everywoman and Mary become friends, their conversations, both profound and intimate, touch upon Mary's significance and enduring relevance. Told with humor and grace, Our Lady of the Lost and Found is an absorbing tour through Mary's history and a thoughtful meditation on spirituality, our need for faith, and our desire to believe in something larger than ourselves.

Book excerpt: Larry has worked his way up to his first big assignment as a manager. But now the work is piling up on his desk. His people can’t seem to make decisions—certainly not the right ones. His mentor has been fired. Worst of all, his boss sends him out for leadership training. Larry never thought he needed all that “people skills” stuff to perform, and spouting buzzwords doesn’t seem to work for him, anyway. I’m doing my job, Larry thinks. What does this company want from me? He truly feels lost. After alienating his staff even more and incurring costly time delays, Larry is sent on a forced vacation, which begins with a comic but poignant fishing trip misadventure. Finally, miles from home and work, Larry opens his mind to new ways of thinking about leadership. He learns important leadership lessons in his daily life: planning a family trip, watching his son play ball, fishing with his daughter. He realizes that everyone needs to KNOW, GROW, and OWN, and that being a leader means helping and enabling people to fulfill those needs. At last Larry has a credo that he can believe in, three powerful principles that all managers can use to get the best from themselves and the people around them. Praised by executives and business experts, Lost & Found reveals the core of leadership through the power of an engaging and wonderfully told story. Managers will recognize parts of themselves and people they know in Larry Parks, a smart worker temporarily stymied by a new type of challenge. At the end of the book the authors provide tips for putting the KNOW-GROW-OWN credo to work in different types of jobs and in different kinds of companies and organizations. Combining inspiration and practical advice, Lost & Found will help talented workers transform themselves into great leaders.

Book excerpt: "Lost and Found offers a new understanding of modern Japanese regionalism by revealing the tense and volatile historical relationship between region and nation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Aizu, a star-crossed region in present-day Fukushima prefecture, becomes a case study for how one locale was estranged from nationhood for its treasonous blunder in the Meiji Restoration, yet eventually found a useful place within the imperial landscape. Local mythmakers—historians, memoirists, war veterans, and others—harmonized their rebel homeland with imperial Japan so as to affirm, ironically, the ultimate integrity of the Japanese polity. What was once “lost” and then “found” again was not simply Aizu’s sense of place and identity, but the larger value of regionalism in a rapidly modernizing society. In this study, Hiraku Shimoda suggests that “region,” which is often regarded as a hard, natural place that impedes national unity, is in fact a supple and contingent spatial category that can be made to reinforce nationalist sensibilities just as much as internal diversity."

Book excerpt: Well known for his imaginative treatment of environmental issues, Kevin Dann presents a natural history of the Lewis Creek watershed in Vermont's Champlain Valley, told largely through the lives and thought of three individuals, whose investigations brought them into close contact with the area. Congregationalist minister John Perry (1825 - 1872) conducted paleontological research on the region's Paleozoic rock and attempted to negotiate his era's confrontation between science and religion. Rowland Robinson (1833 - 1900) was a Quaker farmer and author/artist whose historical fiction often dealt with issues of human impact on this watershed. The first plant-hunting expeditions of another Quaker farmer and noted plant collector, Cyrus Pringle (1838 - 1911), took place in this watershed as well. Dann's account of these three men, whose lives span nearly a century, graphically illustrates contemporary human-nature relationships at the same time that it suggests the limits of science in circumscribing our experience of the physical landscape. The experience of pain and loss is documented along with the stories of success and celebration, since, as Dann writes, "Genuine places, like human hearts, have dark recesses within them, and by examining these recesses within the Lewis Creek watershed, we take a small step toward demythologizing Vermont."

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • A “profound and beautiful” (Marilynne Robinson) account of joy and sorrow from one of the great writers of our time, The New Yorker’s Kathryn Schulz, winner of the Pulitzer Prize “I will stake my reputation on you being blown away by Lost & Found.”—Anne Lamott, author of Dusk, Night, Dawn and Bird by Bird LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD • LONGLISTED FOR THE ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, NPR, The Washington Post, Publishers Weekly One spring morning, Kathryn Schulz went to lunch with a stranger and fell in love. Having spent years looking for the right relationship, she was dazzled by how swiftly everything changed when she finally met her future wife. But as the two of them began building a life together, Schulz’s beloved father—a charming, brilliant, absentminded Jewish refugee—went into the hospital with a minor heart condition and never came out. Newly in love yet also newly bereft, Schulz was left contending simultaneously with wild joy and terrible grief. Those twin experiences form the heart of Lost & Found, a profound meditation on the families that make us and the families we make. But Schulz’s book also explores how disappearance and discovery shape us all. On average, we each lose two hundred thousand objects over our lifetime, and Schulz brilliantly illuminates the relationship between those everyday losses and our most devastating ones. Likewise, she explores the importance of seeking, whether for ancient ruins or new ideas, friends, faith, meaning, or love. The resulting book is part memoir, part guidebook to sustaining wonder and gratitude even in the face of loss and grief. A staff writer at The New Yorker and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Schulz writes with curiosity, tenderness, and humor about the connections between joy and sorrow—and between us all.

Sarah won the 2012 Cheshire Prize for Literature with her short story Udumbara in Lytham St Anne's, and it's in this modest seaside town that Lost and Found begins. Reading through the stories in this collection, the reader will find many things: surreal flotsam on a desolate beach; a love letter mislaid for decades; turns of phrase in a classroom; relationships shaped in unusual settings. But to find something means simultaneously to acknowledge the possibility of loss. And loss figures largely in the anthology, too: from beloved relatives, to despised spouses, and from inconsequential objects to an individual s very sense of self, life's losses are portrayed here in a variety of humorous, dark, and frequently surprising ways. The Cheshire Prize for Literature was inaugurated in 2003 as the High Sheriff s Cheshire Prize for Literature. It is funded by the Bank of America Europe Card Services and is administered by the University of Chester. The 2012 competition was for short stories, and this collection contains 24 of the shortlisted entries, including those of the eventual winner.
