Book excerpt: Methods and Measures: Thirty college-age students with tight hamstrings (inability to achieve>160° knee extension at 90° hip flexion) participated. Subjects were assigned to 1 of 3 groups, (diathermy and stretch; sham diathermy and stretch; control). Range of motion was recorded before and after each treatment every other day for 2 weeks. Additional ROM measures were taken on days 15, 22, 29, and 36. A straight-leg raise stretch was performed using a mechanical apparatus. Subjects in the diathermy and stretch group received 10 minutes of diathermy (distal hamstrings), 5 minutes of diathermy and stretch, followed by 5 minutes of stretching only. Subjects in the sham diathermy and stretch group followed the same protocol, except the diathermy unit was turned off. Subjects in the control group lay on the table for 20 minutes. Data were analyzed using an ANOVA, an ANCOVA, and post hoc t-tests.

Book excerpt: Pulsed shortwave diathermy (PSWD) is an electromagnetic thermal modality used in the clinical setting. It is believed that temperature increases associated with PSWD in combination with stretch may reduce stiffness and increase tissue compliance. Our objective was to assess the short-term effects of PSWD and stretch on the torque-angle relation of the triceps surae muscles when passive stretch is applied both during and after PSWD treatment. We used a 3 X 4 (Time X Treatment) and a 2 X 4 (Time X Treatment) crossover repeated measure designs in this study. The independent variables were condition (stretching during diathermy, stretching after diathermy, and stretching during and after diathermy treatment) and time (pre, post, 15-minutes post treatment). Alpha was set at 0.05. Data was collected at the University of Texas at Arlington, Department of Kinesiology's Neuromuscular Exercise Science and Research Laboratory. Sixteen males (height, 175.86 +/- 9.13 centimeters; weight 82.30 +/- 17.16 kilograms; age, 22.94 +/- 3.75 years) completed a health history form and signed an informed consent. Dependent variables were energy absorbed, energy returned, peak torque, average stiffness, intramuscular temperature, and average range of motion (ROM). PSWD treatments showed an average increase of 3.51 +/- 0.27°C in intramuscular temperature after 20 minutes of PSWD treatment. Whereas, the control treatment's intramuscular temperature decreased 0.85 +/- 0.30°C after 30 minutes of resting on a plinth. Low-load long duration stretching in combination with PSWD seems to have an effect on and significantly increases tissue compliance. Peak torque and average stiffness decreased (12% and 10%, respectively) from pre to post treatment for all heating and stretch conditions. However, there was a greater increase in tissue compliance during treatments when stretch was applied during tissue cooling. From the results of our study, we now believe that stretch combined with heat does affect tissue compliance and that the best time to stretch is after the tissue has been heated sufficiently and while the tissue is cooling.

Book excerpt: The optimal duration of an acute static stretch of the hamstring muscles to improve knee extension ROM has not been determined and not many studies, to my knowledge, have tested the acute effects of a single bout of static stretch for longer durations greater than 60 seconds in older adults while also testing their physical function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of a single bout of "low intensity" static stretching of the hamstring muscle for 0, 30, 60, 120 seconds to determine which duration of stretching will produce and maintain the greatest gains in knee ROM. Nineteen participants aged 55-80 years were volunteered for the study. Results of the study showed that a longer duration stretch of 60-120-seconds was more effective in producing acute gains in knee ROM than a shorter duration of 30 seconds within the older adults.

Book excerpt: NASM Essentials of Corrective Exercise Training introduces the health and fitness professional to NASM's proprietary Corrective Exercise Continuum, a system of training that uses corrective exercise strategies to help improve muscle imbalances and movement efficiency to decrease the risk of injury. This textbook includes several new chapters that were not included in NASM's previous corrective exercise materials, including the rationale for corrective exercise training, assessments of health risk, static postural assessments, range of motion assessments, and strength assessments (manual muscle testing) as well as corrective exercise strategies for the cervical spine, elbow, and wrist. There are more than 100 corrective exercise techniques in the categories of self-myofascial release, static stretching, neuromuscular stretching, isolated strength training, positional isometrics, and integrated dynamic movements included in the text. These, along with corrective exercise strategies for common movement impairments seen in each segment of the body, make this text the premier resource for learning and applying NASM's systematic approach to corrective exercise training.

Book excerpt: The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book to cover the underlying physiology and psychology of flexibility enhancing techniques, critically assessing why, when, and how we should stretch, as well as offering a highly illustrated, practical guide to stretching exercises. This fully revised new edition not only updates the present information but adds new chapters on areas that have attracted substantial interest in the last 5 years such as foam rolling, vibration, global effects of stretching, alternative methods to increase flexibility (e.g., resistance training) and others. Richly illustrated, and including an online resource, The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching provides an important scientific inquiry into stretching as well as other flexibility enhancing techniques (e.g., foam rolling, vibration, resistance training, and others) and an invaluable reference for any strength and conditioning coach or student, personal trainer, sports coach, or exercise scientist.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study compared the acute and long-term effects of intermittent and continuous static stretching training on straight leg raise range of motion (ROM). Seventy-seven preadolescent female gymnasts were divided into a stretching (n=57), and a control group (n=20). The stretching group performed static stretching of the hip extensors of both legs, three times per week for 15weeks. One leg performed intermittent (3×30s with 30s rest) while the other leg performed continuous stretching (90s). ROM pre- and post-stretching was measured at baseline, on weeks 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and after 2weeks of detraining. ROM was increased during both intermittent and continuous stretching training, but remained unchanged in the control group. Intermittent stretching conferred a larger improvement in ROM compared to both continuous stretching and control from week 3, until the end of training, and following detraining (p=0.045 to 0.001 and d=0.80 to 1.41). During detraining, ROM after the intermittent protocol decreased (p=0.001), while it was maintained after the continuous protocol (p=0.36). Acute increases in ROM following the intermittent stretching were also larger than in the continuous (p=0.038). Intermittent stretching was more effective than continuous, for both long-term and acute ROM enhancement in preadolescent female athletes.
