Book excerpt: This is Dominic's fifth novel about the adventures of Carl Brecht, an anthropologist, who lives with his wife, Barbara, in an Illinois suburb. Their relationship becomes strained when Carl's Nepalese colleagues from the University of Chicago invite him to go on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet during the month of August in 2013. Barbara is disturbed by her dreams about Carl travelling to Nepal and trekking in Chinese occupied Tibet during the monsoon season. Her fear escalates after reading in the newspaper that 60,000 Hindu pilgrims from India were stranded in the Himalayas due to the monsoon. She was also worried about Carl flying from O'Hare on Qatari Airlines because the Taliban had recently opened an embassy in Doha, where the plane would have a six hour layover. Barbara was also concerned about their son, Mark, getting a divorce from Corrine and the future of the grandchildren, Sammy and Emily. At the last minute their daughter, Kathy, a medical doctor doing residency at Rush University Hospital, was selected to do an International Rotation in Nepal. She joined her father on the flight with his friends. Challenging adventures take place on the twelve hour flight to Doha and again after their arrival in Kathmandu. Carl noticed that several roads were rutted and unpaved due to the slow recovery of the country after the Maoist Revolution, the removal of the monarchy, and Royal Palace being turned into a museum. While Kathy went directly to work at the hospital in the nearby city of Patan, Carl toured Hindu and Buddhist temples with his friends for a few days before departing for Tibet by bus. On the nine day trip to and from Mount Kailash in land cruisers, be prepared for landslides in the Himalayas, the meeting of outlaws, spending the night with Tibetan nomads, and more adventures while trekking up and down Mount Kailash and before returning to Kathmandu. The biggest surprise takes place at the end of the novel in the garden of the Kathmandu Guest House.

Book excerpt: Mount Kailash is a holy mountain on the western edge of the Tibetan Plateau in China. Over recent decades, this eerily symmetrical mountain, holy to Bonpos, Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, animists and New Age seekers, has emerged as a globally important site for pilgrimage and tourism. This mountain lies close to the point where the borders of north India and western Nepal meet China. What has been relatively little known to the general audience is the central role that transborder interdependence has played in shaping the lives, livelihoods and culture of the communities residing in these borderland regions, in the proximity of Kailash. In the monsoon of 2016, an international team of social scientists, artists and members of the local community undertook a difficult 300-kilometre-long trek from district Humla, western Nepal, into the Tibetan Autonomous Region, China. The aim was to document and understand the contemporary rhythms of livelihoods, material culture and perceptions of the sacred among the communities living along an ancient southern route to Mount Kailash, which had been in use for transborder trade and pilgrimage for several centuries. This book, studded with lush photographs, brings to life several individuals and scenes encountered during this expedition-stories of the past, of change, of aspirations, of the sheer beauty and vulnerabilities of life in one of the least accessible but most sacred corners of the world.

Book excerpt: Kailash - The Heart and Soul of Tibet There are few places on Earth comparable to the mysterious, stunningly beautiful and completely isolated Mt Kailash, which lies well hidden in a remote and deserted region of western Tibet. In order to understand the importance of holy Mt Kailash it is necessary to know that it is considered the legendary abode of the gods. One circle around the mountain (54 km) is symbolically one revolution of the wheel of life or the cycle from birth to death. This, simultaneously, brings about the purification and forgiveness of all sins committed in this lifetime. This is the land of the Sun. In this spot I started to understand the difference between the world that I was coming from and the one that was standing before me. This is without doubt the most beautiful spot on Earth. This is Shambala! These were moments of great happiness, when all the struggles of travelling are forgotten and replaced by sheer joy. This is the physical and spiritual climax of the pilgrimage because the Drolma La pass is considered the most holy spot on the trail and arrival there marks the beginning of a completely new life.

Its shape is unmistakable: a symmetrical cone marked with striations and graced with perpetual snows. Four rivers emanate from it, nourishing the entire region. Mount Kailash is the center of the spiritual universe. It is sacred to four religions: Buddhism, Hinduism, Bön, and Jainism. For Hindus, it is the home of Shiva. All of these statements are true of this magnificent mountain, but the truest is what my teacher said to me before I left to do prostrations around Mt. Kailash: “The center of the spiritual universe already exists in your human heart. Meet your mirror.”

Book excerpt: The groups of people from various walks of life who travelled with Mohanji to experience this enigma called Kailash. This is their story. This book could open up doors and windows and bring new light into the minds of spiritual seekers, curious thinkers, travellers to Kailash or even a casual reader. Mount Kailash – the most powerful energy portal of earth. Kailash stands tall in the horizons of various religions and spiritual paths as an ultimate goal and destination for its seekers. It challenges man to test the death of his spiritual conviction. It literally moves mountains in endurance. Man versus Kailash could mean the ultimate realisation that every man is indeed Kailash - in depth and mystery. The mystery and power of the yogi God, called Shiva overwhelms a man to take up this journey of a lifetime against all odds. This is a life changing expedition. This is the ultimate test of faith. This is the ultimate pilgrimage of man to his own eternal abode. The idea of this book was conceived after this group of pilgrims made the most important journey of their lives - the Kailash Manasarovar pilgrimage - which was made more sublime with the presence of their spiritual teacher, Mohanji. This is an unusual format for a book wherein different people from all walks of life came together to share their experiences after the pilgrimage in July 2012. It has taken nine months, the full term for a human life to take birth, to compile and rewrite this book. In the course of this period it was written and rewritten in three different formats. A note from Mohanji is followed by the significance of Kailash-Manasarovar and a complete narrative of the journey written by the editor, Aparna Sharma. Chapter 5 is in the words of all those who came together to create this book, some fellow pilgrims and some who did not attend the pilgrimage but were connected, in spirit through mystical chords of love.

It attracted me too for years, and I finally could make this journey only in 2015, traveling for 21 days, crossing the formidable Himalayas through the high Himalayan Lipulekh Pass into Tibet. The book is a compilation of my personal experiences in this journey through the classical route followed by a lot of pilgrims and holy men in the past. I have tried to capture the minute details of this life-changing journey as best as possible in the various chapters. A day-to-day account with illustrations provides the reader a flavor of this journey in great detail. A section of this book is devoted to help future travelers with the preparations they need to do, both physical and mental, and the safety aspects to be followed. It also has a few lines on High Altitude Illness. While preparing for this important pilgrimage, I could not find a lot of vital information and facts initially. I tried to collect this information from various sources, and after reading them and understanding them, I felt very confident to do this yatra.

That's the question Kavitha and her cousin, Pallu, ask themselves as they trek through Himalayan pine forests and unforgiving mountains in Nepal and Tibet. Their goal: to reach Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. The two women walk to ancient monasteries, meditate on freezing slopes, dance on the foothills of Kailash, and confront death in the thin mountain air. In Kailash and Manasarovar, the holiest of Hindu and Buddhist sites, they struggle to reconcile their rationalist views with faith and the beloved myths of their upbringing. Remarkably, it is this journey that helps them discover the meaning of friendship. Walking in Clouds is a beautifully crafted memoir of a journey to far-away places and to the places within. It mixes lyrical, descriptive storytelling with stunning photographs to bring to life a unique travelogue.

Book excerpt: Embark on a soul-stirring journey of love and transformation-where every step is a leap towards the endless embrace of self-compassion and universal love. *** "Receiving a heart-calling to travel the holy path around one of the world's most sacred mountains, Tracey Alysson takes us on this thirty-four-mile path not by walking but by doing endless prostrations. Travelling a path filled with rocks and boulders, a path often underwater or covered with ice and snow at higher elevations, requires more than physical stamina. Here we are brought to the essence of a spiritual journey as she and we learn that the physical body alone cannot accomplish this task; yet, the physical demands strip away all illusions and all defenses to lay bare the emotional, psychic, and spiritual bones of her being. It is a heart-rending and heart-felt pilgrimage." -Barbara Meyers, MSW, author of Common Ground, Uncommon Gifts: Growing Peace and Harmony Through Stories, Reflections, and Practices in the Natural World and Fables for Wisdom Seekers Young and Old *** Tossing and turning for an hour, sorting things through in my thoughts. I am so afraid. I am so afraid to set my foot on Mount Kailash. Why did they invite me? I don't want this much vitality, this much ability, this much blessing. All my life, I just wanted to be left alone and to be ordinary, and now, I come and accept an invitation like this. It's not going around the mountain. I think I can do that if I choose to. It's that if I go around the mountain, it never stops. There is no escape from all this love. There's no escape, and that's what terrifies me. MotherFather Kailash, receive me, teach me in the way I need to be taught. Despite my ignorance, despite my blindness, I have come to you. I have come. I have come to receive your blessing and your teaching and your empowerment. I have come to love you. I have come to love me. (page 67)
