Book excerpt: British Christianity is embedded with a deep sense history that once discovered, will start to reveal an apostolic linage traceable to the Book of Acts. With the rise of British Christianity in various parts of ancient Britain, it played a fundamental, yet pivotal role in maintaining and shaping the baptismal practice of single immersion in the name of Christ alone. At least from the time of Tertullian of Carthage as testified by the Church Historian, Eusebius of Caesarea to the acclaimed British born and first Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine who oversaw and officiated the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D, the entrance of Christianity into Britain was seen to resist Roman and Papal authority and jurisdiction, thereby minimizing any Roman influence and dominance, resulting in the excommunication of the British Church. The British Church with is religious practices became a thorn in the side of the Roman Church, but continued to exercise its religious freedoms in accordance with the apostolic message. Therefore, contained within this work is reference to an array of literature, publications and prominent figures who noted baptism in the name of Jesus only or Christ alone from within Britain since the ancient period till the present. Great Britain has been home to baptism in the name of Jesus only for centuries and hundreds of years, coupled with theological belief of the British and European people of sabellianism derivative from the New Testament with an Old Testament foundation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Quarterly Review, Vol. 26: July, 1866 However, as the Views and the hopes Of the leaders Of the slave-holding confederacy became gradually revealed, and the influences which were at work in the American mind became understood, and the various terminations Of the civil wars Which seemed possible or probable at different periods opened upon us, the Opinions Of intelligent and impartial friends Of humanity gradually changed, and many who had begun by looking upon the success Of the Confederate States as certain and not wholly undesirable, ended by feeling that by their defeat the world had escaped a tremendous, a - humanly speaking - irreparable calamity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little has been written about the New Deal's effect at the state level. How did the states act before the New Deal? Did the Roosevelt administration promote progressive policies on the state level? Did it destroy state initiative? Was it discriminatory? In what kinds of states did it seem to have the greatest impact, and why? What barriers were placed in the way of New Deal planning? Professor Patterson traces trends in state affairs and in American federalism between 1920 and 1940, focusing on the states in relation to the federal government. Though he pays attention to individual state variations, he searches for generalizations which explain the pattern instead of presenting a routine state-by-state survey. Originally published in 1969. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Meiji Era, of 1868-1912, British influence in Japan was stronger than that of any other foreign power. Although role models were sought from Englishmen and Scotsmen, whether diplomats, engineers, educators or philosophers, the first priority for the Japanese was to achieve a transfer of industrial and technical skills. As important customers, who brought good profits to British industry, the Japanese were accommodated when they stipulated on awarding a contract that their own people should work in office, shipyard or factory. Much new research material discovered in Japan, England and Scotland has enabled the detailed examination of a relationship - with Britain as Senior and Japan as Junior partner - which lasted until 1914. It was on these foundations that Japan was able subsequently to build a great industrial nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines, within a chronological framework, the major themes and personalities which influenced the outbreak of a number of Evangelical clerical and lay secessions from the Church of England and Ireland during the first half of the nineteenth century. Though the number of secessions was relatively small-between a hundred and two hundred of the 'Gospel clergy' abandoned the Church during this period-their influence was considerable, especially in highlighting in embarrassing fashion the tensions between the evangelical conversionist imperative and the principles of a national religious establishment. Moreover, through much of this period there remained, just beneath the surface, the potential threat of a large Evangelical disruption similar to that which occurred in Scotland in 1843. Consequently, these secessions provoked great consternation within the Church and within Evangelicalism itself, they contributed to the outbreak of millennia! Speculation following the 'constitutional revolution' of 1828-32, they led to the formation of several new denominations, and they sparked off a major Church-State crisis over the legal right of a clergyman to secede and begin a new ministry within Protestant Dissent.
