Book excerpt: St. Augustine says there is “no other reason for men to philosophize but to be happy.” Obviously, the Recuperation of the Theological Ethics of Happiness versus Logicism and Phil-Ideology is grounded in Book 1 of this author’s trilogy because, without metaphysics, there are no superior goods, and without the possession of such goods, there is no happiness. The most original and philosophic parts of this essay are the studies regarding the possibility of a science on happiness, the analysis of love, and the metaphysical study of the law which, in Kant and logicist strands, becomes ultimate reference point for morals. Epistemology shows that the law is an elaboration integrated by “universal concepts” and, therefore, should not be the ultimate point of reference, supplanting the supreme, singular-personal good. Love is focused in relation to happiness. Love is not desire but connaturality or adaptation to the good. Equipped with an appropriate notion of love, it is possible to delve into the act of creation and into the need of intellectual creatures to achieve the end of creation. There is no happiness without rationality and internal freedom. The last third of the book turns more theological, explaining that only under the action of the Spirit can the arduous good be desired, leading to “freedom from the law.” The New Law is the very presence of the Holy Spirit according to Aquinas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Logicist Tribulation of Sophia is a trilogy that attempts to confront idealism, positivism, secular humanism, as well as decadent and sterile Thomism. Since the most important parts of Book 1 are the result of the author's personal interpretation of Thomas Aquinas, the work is unexpectedly original. Logicism is a kind of animism invested of rationality. Animism is the unscientific tendency of transposing outside the mind interpretations of our cognitive apparatus. In general, all errors in science are related to logicism because they are human errors and, consequently, a product of or related to the way we feel and think. "Whoever ignores his own cognitive limitation falls into some form of logicism (or animism) for he ends up projecting his own ideas or mental schemes upon reality. Human science is always perfectible. Each new progress frequently uncovers the traces of previous logicism" (Book 1). The trilogy has unity in spite of its variety and amplitude. The relentless attack against logicism is the spark that kindles the flame of its unaltered leitmotiv and preponderant weapon: epistemology. This aims to foster the development of critical and analytical abilities. Hence the dedication: ERUDIENDIS ABSQUE DOLO SEU FICTIONE IUNIORIBUS PRAECIPUE (to those who are to be taught without fiction or deceit, especially the youth). Book 1 develops the essentials of an epistemological technique discovered in Aquinas, thus providing a scientific procedure for philosophy. It is the foundational section of the trilogy. Book 2 is titled Recuperation of the Theological Ethics of Happiness against Logicism and Phil-Ideology, and Book 3 is Recuperation of Theological Principles against Ideo-logicist Incompetence. A.J. Bueno is a Catholic priest from Venezuela and Colombia, who studied at Princeton University and at the Universita Lateranense in Rome. He now lives in Trinidad. Book excerpt: This Recuperation, based on the epistemology of Book 1, confronts the logicist destruction in theology. The preface enjoins: “Logicism is deleterious in all sciences. We shall see how it can destroy Theology trying, for example, to replace reality with sacred texts, that is, with testimonies of Revelation.” The logicist sub-epistemology certainly favors the identification of Revelation with Bible, of faith with articles of faith, of enuntiabilia and concepts with reality. Writing his theological thesis on Bonaventure, J. Ratzinger was pleasantly surprised to discover that no one in the thirteenth century called the Bible the Revelation. But this does not mean that logicism began afterward, with Descartes, for example, reaching its apotheosis with the German idealism. This book explains how a peculiar symbiosis of nominalism (Ockham) and logicism impairs the sincere and orthodox initial search of Luther, who ends up developing a theology of the nomina-logicist sort source of ravings. Erasmus perceives it and tries to refute him, but is a victim of similar epistemological blunders. The book’s second part focuses on the issue of the integral education of young people and leads to the need of sacred theology. Is it advisable to teach young people metaphysics and ethics in a strictly philosophical way in order to provide a fundamental view of reality, a Weltanschauung, perhaps? The explicit answer of Aristotle and Thomas is a resounding no. Aquinas advocates teaching metaphysics within theology.

Book excerpt: 'A highly readable and spiritually uplifting book about a dream come true' Wanderlust 'Touching and memorable ... one for armchair travellers and bike freaks' Daily Mail From London to New York, Ewan and Charley chased their shadows through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia, across the Pacific to Alaska, then down through Canada and America. But as the miles slipped beneath the tyres of their big BMWs, their troubles started. Exhaustion, injury and accidents tested their strength. Treacherous roads, unpredictable weather and turbulent politics challenged their stamina. They were chased by paparazzi in Kazakhstan, courted by men with very large guns in the Ukraine, hassled by the police, and given bulls' testicles for supper by Mongolian nomads. And yet despite all these obstacles they managed to ride more than twenty thousand miles in four months, changing their lives forever in the process. As they travelled they documented their trip, taking photographs, and writing diaries by the campfire. Long Way Round is the result of their adventures - a fascinating, frank and highly entertaining travel book about two friends riding round the world together and, against all the odds, realising their dream.

Book excerpt: The deployment of a large number of soldiers, police officers and civilian personnel inevitably has various effects on the host society and economy, not all of which are in keeping with the peacekeeping mandate and intent or are easily discernible prior to the intervention. This book is one of the first attempts to improve our understanding of unintended consequences of peacekeeping operations, by bringing together field experiences and academic analysis. The aim of the book is not to discredit peace operations but rather to improve the way in which such operations are planned and managed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the personal accounts and reflections of nineteen mathematical model-builders, whose specialty is probabilistic modelling. The reader may well wonder why, apart from personal interest, one should commission and edit such a collection of articles. There are, of course, many reasons, but perhaps the three most relevant are: (i) a philosophicaJ interest in conceptual models; this is an interest shared by everyone who has ever puzzled over the relationship between thought and reality; (ii) a conviction, not unsupported by empirical evidence, that probabilistic modelling has an important contribution to make to scientific research; and finally (iii) a curiosity, historical in its nature, about the complex interplay between personal events and the development of a field of mathematical research, namely applied probability. Let me discuss each of these in turn. Philosophical Abstraction, the formation of concepts, and the construction of conceptual models present us with complex philosophical problems which date back to Democritus, Plato and Aristotle. We have all, at one time or another, wondered just how we think; are our thoughts, concepts and models of reality approxim&tions to the truth, or are they simply functional constructs helping us to master our environment? Nowhere are these problems more apparent than in mathematical model ling, where idealized concepts and constructions replace the imperfect realities for which they stand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of apokatastasis (restoration), most famously defended by the Alexandrian exegete, philosopher and theologian Origen, has its roots in both Greek philosophy and Jewish-Christian Scriptures and literature, and became a major theologico-soteriological doctrine in patristics. This monograph—the first comprehensive, systematic scholarly study of the history of the Christian apokatastasis doctrine—argues its presence and Christological and Biblical foundation in numerous Christian thinkers, including Syriac, and analyses its origins, meaning, and development over eight centuries, from the New Testament to Eriugena, the last patristic philosopher. Surprises await readers of this book, which results from fifteen years of research. For instance, they will discover that even Augustine, in his anti-Manichaean phase, supported the theory of universal restoration.

The Invisible Committee's The Coming Insurrection was a phenomenon, celebrated in some quarters and inveighed against in others, publicized in media that ranged from campus bulletin boards to Fox News. Seven years later, The Invisible Committee follows up their premonitory manifesto with a new book, To Our Friends. From The Invisible Committee: In 2007 we published The Coming Insurrection in France. It must be acknowledged that a number of assertions by the Invisible Committee have since been confirmed, starting with the first and most essential: the sensational return of the insurrectionary phenomenon. Who would have bet a kopeck, seven years ago, on the overthrow of Ben Ali or Mubarak through street action, on the revolt of young people in Quebec, on the political awakening of Brazil, on the fires set French-style in the English or Swedish banlieues, on the creation of an insurrectionary commune in the very heart of Istanbul, on a movement of plaza occupations in the United States, or on the rebellion that spread throughout Greece in December of 2008? During the seven years that separate The Coming Insurrection from To Our Friends, the agents of the Invisible Committee have continued to fight, to organize, to transport themselves to the four corners of the world, to wherever the fires were lit, and to debate with comrades of every tendency and every country. Thus To Our Friends is written at the experiential level, in connection with that general movement. Its words issue from the turmoil and are addressed to those who still believe sufficiently in life to fight as a consequence. To Our Friends is a report on the state of the world and of the movement, a piece of writing that's essentially strategic and openly partisan. Its political ambition is immodest: to produce a shared understanding of the epoch, in spite of the extreme confusion of the present.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to set forth the history of the U.S. Coast Guard in its battle with the rum runners.Probably no other era in American history has been more controversial than the prohibition period, extending from the middle 1920's through the early 1930's. As one of the law enforcement agencies charged with the suppression of the illegal liquor traffic, the United States Coast Guard was deeply involved in what has come to be known as "The Rum War." It was a hard, unremitting war with few of the rewards normally accompanying performance of such duty. Under the law, the Coast Guard had no alternative but to conduct it with zeal and dedication, utilizing all the resources at its command. The story of the "Noble Experiment" is in large part a Coast Guard story. In this carefully researched, well documented history, students of this turbulent chapter of American history will find rewarding reading.

Book excerpt: The Visio Pauli and the Gnostic Apocalypse of Paul is the first modern collection of studies on the most important aspects of the Visio Pauli, the most popular early Christian apocalypse in the Middle Ages. The volume starts with a short study of the textual traditions of the Visio Pauli, its Jewish and early Christian traditions as well as its influence on later literature, such as Dante. This is followed by studies of the Prologue, the four rivers of Eden, the place of the Ocean, the relation between body and soul, the image of hell and its punishments, and the connection with fantastic literature. Finally, a codicological, comparative, and textual re-evaluation of the Coptic translation attempts to correct earlier errors and to rehabilitate the value and interest of this long neglected version of the Visio Pauli. The book is concluded with a study of the earthly tribunal in the fourth heaven of the Gnostic Apocalypse of Paul. As has become customary, the volume is rounded off by an extensive bibliography of the Visio Pauli and the Gnostic Apocalypse of Paul and a detailed index.

Book excerpt: By describing the fabric of relationships indigenous peoples weave with their environment, The Land Within attempts to define a more precise notion of indigenous territoriality. A large part of the work of titling the South American indigenous territories may now be completed but this book aims to demonstrate that, in addition to management, these territories involve many other complex aspects that must not be overlooked if the risk of losing these areas to settlers or extraction companies is to be avoided. Alexandre Surralls holds a doctorate in anthropology from the School for Higher Studies in Social Sciences and is a researcher on the staff of the National Centre for Scientific Research. Pedro Garca Hierro is a lawyer from Madrid Complutense University and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. He has worked with various indigenous organizations, on issues related to the identification and development of collective rights and the promotion of intercultural democratic reforms.
