Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noted theologian Samuel Escobar offers a magisterial survey and study of Christology in Latin America. In Search of Christ in Latin America examines the figure of Jesus Christ in the context of Latin American culture, starting with the first Spanish influence in the sixteenth century and moving through popular religiosity and liberationist themes in Catholic and Protestant thought of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, culminating in an important description of the work of the Fraternidad Teológica Latinoamericana (FTL). Escobar provides theological, historical, and cultural analysis of Latin American understandings of Christ and places liberation theology within its social and revolutionary context. This book is an important step toward a rich understanding of the spiritual reality and powerful message of Jesus.

Book excerpt: This pioneering, monumental work utilizes the visionary legacy of Anne Catherine Emmerich and the spiritual scientific discoveries of Rudolf Steiner concerning various hidden facts of Christ's incarnation. Powell has established the dates and daily events of Jesus Christ on Earth. Further, he indicates their significance for our future. In part one, Powell gives a historical overview. Then, using esoteric sources and his own knowledge of sidereal astrology, he offers startling insights into the circumstances of the Christmas event and the incarnation. In part two, Powell offers a daily chronicle of the three-and-a-half-year ministry of Jesus Christ on Earth, dating the events with an unprecedented accuracy. Also, Powell correlates significant events in Christ's life with upcoming dates in the history of humankind and indicates that the living presence of the Christ is increasingly accessible to us.

Book excerpt: Is Jesus’ promise to live on through his believers true? Can we find the living Christ in today’s complicated, uneasy world? Harold Fickett explores these questions in The Living Christ, a journey throughout the world in search of individual Christians whose daily lives reflect different aspects of the resurrected Christ. Fickett profiles a woman who rescues girls from prostitution in Thailand, a “trucker chaplain” in South Carolina, a visionary living on the California coast, an America priest who conducts a healing ministry in Mexico City, and others who carry out the work of Christ in difficult, sometimes desperate circumstances. Written with narrative flair and offering surprising theological insights, these real-life stories stimulate new and enlightening meditations on Jesus the Liberator, Wayfarer, Contemplative, Healer, and Martyr. Like the writings of Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, and Philip Yancey, The Living Christ will appeal to all who seek a deeper spirituality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosive growth of Pentecostalism has radically transformed Latin America’s religious landscape within the last half century or so. In a region where Catholicism reigned hegemonic for centuries, the expansion of Pentecostalism has now resulted in a situation of religious pluralism and competition, bearing much more resemblance to the United States than to the Iberian motherlands. Furthermore, the fierce competition from Pentecostal churches has inspired significant renewals of Latin American Catholicism, most notably the growth of a Catholic Charismatic movement. However, another and more recent source of religious pluralism and diversity in Latin America is an increasing pluralization and diversification of Pentecostalism itself and of the ways in which individual Pentecostals exercise their faith. By carefully exploring this diversification, the book at hand breaks new ground in the literature on Latin American Christianity. Particular attention is focused on new ways of being Pentecostal and on the consequences of recent transformations of Christianity for individuals, faith communities and societies. More specifically, the chapters of the book look into certain transformations of Pentecostalism such as: theological renewals and new kinds of religious competition between Pentecostal churches; a growing political and civic engagement of Pentecostals; an observed de-institutionalization of Pentecostal religious life and the negotiation individual Pentecostal identities, composed of multiple intra- and extra-ecclesial points of identification; and the emergence of new generations of Pentecostals (children of Pentecostal parents), many of whom have higher levels of education and higher incomes than the previous generations within their churches. In addition, Catholic responses to Pentecostal competition are also addressed in several chapters of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other life has had such an amazing impact upon the human race as did our Savior, Jesus Christ. From His birth in a humble stable until His death upon the cross of Golgotha, He left all of us simple teachings, direct commandments and profound doctrines which have altered the history of the world. He performed astounding miracles that left His disciples and other onlookers stunned and speechless. He condemned the hypocrisy of the religious leaders of the day, who would eventually conspire and arrange His death at the hands of the Romans. The culminating act of His ministry was the priceless gift of His eternal Atonement, which opened the floodgates of the resurrection, ending the final and icy grip of death upon all mankind. One day we too will participate in the glorious experience of the resurrection, when all tears will be dried and fears will cease. In a matter of just three years, His brief ministry changed the course of history. Gone was the harsh and rigid Mosaic law, replaced by the higher law of love for friends and enemies alike. His life is an example to all. All of these magnificent scriptural accounts and doctrines can be found within the pages of Days of the Living Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One objective all Christians hold in common is to grow in maturity and faithfulness. Achieving that goal, however, is a constant and difficult challenge. Ethicist Kenneth W. M. Wozniak shows how the author of the epistle to the Hebrews argued that the mature Christian life is a disciplined one lived consistently in the moral realm of human experience. Although the authority for such living traditionally has been the picture of Jesus as found in the Gospels, that picture is only a partial and incomplete one. It does not include Hebrews' essential depiction of the current, living Jesus--both exalted Son and High Priest--who is the focus of worship and whom Christians claim to follow. Wozniak argues that only the often-ignored Jesus of Hebrews, when coupled with the Jesus pictured in the Gospels, is the complete Jesus Christians must obey, emulate, and implant within themselves if they are to live as mature followers of Jesus; it is to this Jesus that they must respond if they are to live faithfully as those who claim "Jesus is Lord!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their apparent similarities, the cultures of Latin American and North American differ remarkably. These differences sometimes cause misunderstanding and tragic failures in communication. In order to aid in mutual understanding, we need a study to find norms and shared values within different Latin American cultures. Understanding Latin Americans helps readers gain new insights into matters that Latins themselves have explored and describe. Part I presents an analysis of basic Latin personality characteristics, as described primarily by Latin psychologists. Part II explores four aspects of the background and developments within Latin America religious life. Special attention is given to movements within Protestantism. Eugene Nida sought to spur ongoing, productive dialogue between Latins and North Americans. This ambition motivated Nida to speaks meaningfully about similarities and differences between cultures. He explores an array of values that mark many spheres of Latin life, whether religious, philosophical, political, aesthetic, social, and familial. This book encourages readers to rethink cultural assumptions as we learn from one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crosscurrents series highlights emerging theologies and biblical interpretations from Majority World and minoritized communities. The first volume in the series elaborates theologies of land, a theme often missing or ignored by churches and theologians, especially in the Global North. In this volume, four authors who represent Palestinian, First Nations, Latinx, and South African communities examine the intricate relationship among land(scape), migration, and identity. Together with a Malaysian Chinese, the authors deliberate on the complex issues arising out of political domination, as well as humanity's conquest and abuse of land that create unjust space, landless people, and the broken landscape of God's creation.
