They were raised up in Providence, for an important purpose; were trained for it by a most extraordinary discipline; and bravely, nobly, did they accomplish their vocation. Their characters, on every account, are worthy of our study. The knowledge and the benefits of their example cannot be too widely extended. I was glad, therefore, when I saw it announced, more than a year ago, that the lives of some of the chief fathers of New England were to be published, in a series of volumes, by the Massachusetts Sabbath School Society. The volumes already published have been well received, and I only regret that the one herewith presented to the public, is so little worthy to have a place among them. Increase Mather was not a literal Pilgrim, but the son of a Pilgrim. He was born in this country soon after its settlement, and here he spent almost the whole of his long and useful life. For more than sixty years together, he was literally a public man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir William Phips Pedantry. Cotton Mather was a writer of excellent quality; he could tell a story vastly better than most men can, and he was not above writing in the vernacular when inspired by the spectacle of action. He is usually thought of as a man of the study, the author of a long list of formidable books and the possessor of New England's greatest library. But it is in the real world that the life of Phips takes place. The story of the treasure hunt, good of course in itself, becomes better by this handling; and so do the stories of the wars and of the mutiny which the Knight of Maine put down. Everywhere in the writ ing there is vigor - the rich, allusive vigor of seventeenth-century prose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the Burroughs Family If any one has a desire or inclination to pursue "knowledge under difficulties" I would suggest to them to try writing up a family genealogy. There are so few people in this country who keep a written record of their families, that it is difficult to gather and write out anything like a correct genealogical record in later years after the members get scattered and each member forms a branch of the family tree. The Burroughs Family is no exception. As the years go by, and time goes on, we shall become the ancestors of the coming generations, and I feel awake to the importance of preserving and carrying forward as correct and complete a genealogical record as possible for the use and benefit of those who come after us. I have been laboring for some years to gather and write up the origin, and line of descent of my own family, and in doing so have been aided materially by correspondence and books of history. I have much in MS. that would help others engaged in the same work in other family lines. The Burroughs name has been numerous along the line of history and includes some individuals of note of whom I will make brief mention. The first I find is Stephen Burroughs, an English navigator of the sixteenth century. He accompanied Chancellor as second in command on his voyage to discover a northeast passage around the eastern continent in 1553. Three years later he had chief command of another expedition equipped with the same object. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the author of A. Lincoln and American Ulysses comes the dramatic and definitive biography of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, the history-altering professor turned Civil War hero. “A vital and vivid portrait of an unlikely military hero who played a key role in the preservation of the Union and therefore in the making of modern America.”—Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of And There Was Light SHORTLISTED FOR THE GILDER LEHRMAN LINCOLN PRIZE • A KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR Before 1862, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain had rarely left his home state of Maine, where he was a trained minister and mild-mannered professor at Bowdoin College. His colleagues were shocked when he volunteered for the Union army, but he was undeterred and later became known as one of the North’s greatest heroes: On the second day at Gettysburg, after running out of ammunition at Little Round Top, he ordered his men to wield their bayonets in a desperate charge down a rocky slope that routed the Confederate attackers. Despite being wounded at Petersburg—and told by two surgeons he would die—Chamberlain survived the war, going on to be elected governor of Maine four times and serve as president of Bowdoin College. How did a stuttering young boy come to be fluent in nine languages and even teach speech and rhetoric? How did a trained minister find his way to the battlefield? Award-winning historian Ronald C. White delves into these contradictions in this cradle-to-grave biography of General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, from his upbringing in rural Maine to his tenacious, empathetic military leadership and his influential postwar public service, exploring a question that still plagues so many veterans: How do you make a civilian life of meaning after having experienced the extreme highs and lows of war? Chamberlain is familiar to millions from Michael Shaara’s now-classic novel of the Civil War, The Killer Angels, and Ken Burns’s timeless miniseries The Civil War, but in this book, White captures the complex and inspiring man behind the hero. Heavily illustrated and featuring nine detailed maps, this gripping, impeccably researched portrait illuminates one of the most admired but least known figures in our nation’s bloodiest conflict.

S: Or a Boston Minister of Two Centuries Ago, 1663-1728 Cotton Mather was born in Boston on the twelfth day of February, 1663. He was the eldest child of Increase and Maria (Cotton) Mather. His grandfather, Rev. Richard Mather, was one of the oldest and wisest of the early settlers of Massachusetts Bay. He was born in Lowton, county of Lancashire, and was a graduate of Brasenose College, Oxford. At Cotton Mather's birth the old patriarch was yet alive, and continued active in the ministry six years longer, when he died, being worn out with toils, dangers, privations, study, prayer, preaching, and all the exhausting though blessed duties of a parish minister. His very presence was a blessing to the opening mind and eyes of the quick-witted boy. Calm, sedate, studious, ever busy, devout, yet pleasant withal, he was an embodiment of the best form of godliness, and from such prayers as his flowed priceless blessings to his grandchild. The grandmother, Katharine Holt, of gentle ancestry, had been taken to heaven. But though one grandmother was gone another had taken her place, for the aged minister had married the widow of the famous John Cotton. She was indeed a mother in Israel.
