The nurse manager is addressed in current research as being in a pivotal position to affect nurse retention. Research has focused on the skills necessary for nurse managers to affect turnover; however, there is little research addressing the pressure placed upon the nurse manager as he or she struggles to maintain the nursing workforce. This qualitative study explored the lived experience of feeling overwhelmed by 6 nurse managers currently working in an inpatient hospital environment. Interviews were analyzed using a modified version of the descriptive-interpretive phenomenological method as described by van Manen. Four essential themes were identified: there is nobody there, caught in the middle, feeling that you are a failure, and the inability to do. One paradigm case exhibited all of the essential themes. The essence of the nurse managerâs lived experience of feeling overwhelmed is helplessness evidenced by constant unresolved conflicts in a complex, chaotic organization with changing expectations, unmet personal fulfillment, and constant turbulence. It is personal conflict related to the desire to impact positive patient and staff outcomes--to make a difference, while feeling that they fall short of the organizationâs and their own personal expectations. Theoretical implications related to Quantum theory, Emotional Intelligence, and Rogerâs Science of Unitary Human Beings are discussed in order to highlight current theoretical literature pertinent to the nurse managerâs experience of feeling overwhelmed. Implications for research, practice, and education are discussed as facility leadership considers the experiences of this group of nurse managers. This study will better inform hospital administrators, nursing leadership, and staff nurses of the lived experience of this group of nurse managers.

Recently, the healthcare systems have witnessed various challenges of pandemics, nursing shortage, limited resources, wars, an increase in the burden of chronic illnesses and psychiatric disorders, and an increase in senior citizens. Nurses, in all practice settings, devote their time to helping people in need to cultivate hope for the survival of humanity. Hence the idea of the 2nd International Nursing Conference came to existence from various discussions between the Faculty of Nursing, at Zarqa University, jointly with the Jordanian Nursing Council and other Nursing Faculties worldwide to shed light on the situation of the nursing profession in present times. Holding this conference is an important station for discussion and exchanging views and experiences on the contemporary issues related to various aspects of the nursing profession in light of the challenges facing the health systems worldwide.

Book excerpt: R.E.A.D.I. to Lead: A Pathway to a Successful First Year as Nurse Manager focuses on the transition into of one of the most challenging jobs in healthcare - the Nurse Manager. R.E.A.D.I. to Lead outlines five attributes critical to leadership success at the point of care. Resolute. Empowered. Authentic. Deliberate. Inquisitive. The Nurse Manager role is a balancing act, full of paradox and conflicting priorities. Nurse Managers juggle an overabundance of balls based on regulatory, professional, environmental and organizational initiatives. The role requires leadership that is resolute and determined. Leadership that is empowered to do what is right, is bold and courageous. Leadership that is authentic and genuine. Leaders that take deliberate action to the manage the changing environment while creating stability and a sense of hope for the future. Leadership that maintains an inquisitive spirit, constantly seeking new knowledge to improve care, fostering the development of themselves and the teams they lead. The pathway integrates R.E.A.D.I. attributes as it outlines the first year of transition in manageable pieces. It addresses how to get started, the first 30 days, 60 days ,90 days, the first 6 months and year in the Nurse Manager role. This book isn't a list of things you should do, rather provides realistic steps to better understand how to move successfully through the first year of transition. Theory, tools and tactics are shared in order to build habits that will create success far beyond the first year. In R.E.A.D.I. to Lead, the typical orientation plan is transitioned from a checklist of items to accomplish into a pathway of continuous development. In R.E.A.D.I. to Lead new Nurse Managers learn a balance of attributes that exhibit strength and vulnerability, determination and flexibility, risk-taking and methodical planning, humbleness and confidence, courage, genuineness, self-awareness, curiosity and agility. They will learn how to lead themselves so they can best manage the business and lead their teams on the relentless pursuit of exceptional compassionate, safe, quality care delivery.

Perfect for leadership/management courses and in health care organizations..." Diana Mason, PhD, C, FAAN, RN Editor Emeritus, American Journal of Nursing Professor of Nursing, Rudin Chair, Hunter-Bellevue College of Nursing Too often, both nurses and patients witness major breakdowns in the health care system-ineffective communication, unrealistic nurse-patient ratios, tension among staff, abuse of authority, and most importantly, managers drawn away from patients due to administrative duties. This inspiring guide presents engaging, real-life stories of nurses, managers, and leaders who have experienced failures of the system firsthand, and have been motivated to critically examine, address, and resolve them. This collection of narratives includes practical methods, models, and strategies that nurses can apply to enhance and expand their own practices. Readers will gain a wealth of insight on how to overcome narrow-mindedness and egocentrism, to improve their management, leadership, communication, and organizational skills, and ultimately to bring real reform to health care practices and patient care. Key features: Presents stories of actual management issues and how nurse leaders/managers, nursing staff, and patients have handled them Identifies harmful trends in the health care system that can be analyzed and remedied Encourages nurse managers to shift the prevailing "system-centered" orientation to one that is "patient-centered" Provides a phenomenologically based leadership/management model for resolving nursing issues institutionally and individually Includes methods for addressing cultural and religious barriers among staff An engaging, enjoyable read, this book will empower readers to learn from these narratives and to dramatically transform the health care system at large.
