Book Synopsis Thrice-Greatest Hermes by : G. R. S. Mead
Download or read book Thrice-Greatest Hermes written by G. R. S. Mead and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 1906 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the edition including all three books. The so-called Hermetic writings have been known to Christian writers for many centuries. The early church Fathers (Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria) quote them in defense of Christianity. Stobaeus collected fragments of them. The Humanists knew and valued them. They were studied in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and in modern times have again been diligently examined by many scholars. G. R. S. Mead has issued a translation of the whole body of extant literature, with extended prolegomena, commentary, etc. There is a wide difference of opinion as to the date at which this literature was produced. Mead believes that some of the extant portions of it are at least as early as the earliest Christian writings, while von Christ assigns them to the third Christian century, and thinks that they show the influence of neo-Platonism. To affirm that they influenced New Testament usage would be hazardous, but they perhaps throw some light on the direction in which thought was moving in New Testament times.
Book Synopsis Culpeper's Medicine by : Graeme Tobyn
Download or read book Culpeper's Medicine written by Graeme Tobyn and published by Singing Dragon. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the writings of Nicholas Culpeper, the 17th-century herbalist, apothecary and astrologer, this updated, accessible introduction celebrates the holistic medical traditions of the West, and places Culpeper in his appropriate context as one of the forebears of modern holistic medicine and a prophet of the NHS. An extensive new introduction to the work comments on the latest research and developments in the area. The book traces the development of the Western holistic medical tradition from its origins in the natural philosophy of Ancient Greece to the work of Culpeper himself. It describes and explains the relationship between the four elements, the four humours and the four constitutional types: sanguine, choleric, melancholic and phlegmatic, as well as explaining the functional relationships of organs and body systems. The book explores the interconnectedness of psyche (mind) and soma (body) and includes a section on herbal medicine and therapeutics with a study of 20 common herbs, dietary suggestions and uses for culinary herbs. It also provides accessible information on astrology and the importance of the horoscope for holistic patient assessment. The book looks at the holistic approach to the preservation of health and prevention of disease, with explanations of the various disease states, their humoral medical diagnosis and treatment. An authoritative insight into the expanding world of holistic medicine, this book is an indispensable resource for medical herbalists, students of herbal medicine and all those interested in Western holistic medicine and its origins.
Book Synopsis Magic in Western Culture by : Brian P. Copenhaver
Download or read book Magic in Western Culture written by Brian P. Copenhaver and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the beliefs and practices called 'magic' starts in ancient Iran, Greece, and Rome, before entering its crucial Christian phase in the Middle Ages. Centering on the Renaissance and Marsilio Ficino - whose work on magic was the most influential account written in premodern times - this groundbreaking book treats magic as a classical tradition with foundations that were distinctly philosophical. Besides Ficino, the premodern story of magic also features Plotinus, Iamblichus, Proclus, Aquinas, Agrippa, Pomponazzi, Porta, Bruno, Campanella, Descartes, Boyle, Leibniz, and Newton, to name only a few of the prominent thinkers discussed in this book. Because pictures play a key role in the story of magic, this book is richly illustrated.

Book Synopsis Mercury's Children - Shamanic and Hermetic Practices by : Mark Stavish
Download or read book Mercury's Children - Shamanic and Hermetic Practices written by Mark Stavish and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mercury's Children - Shamanic and Hermetic Practices is a thorough overview of the common roots and practices of Shamanism and Hermeticism. Shamanism is the foundation of all religion, magic, initiation, and esotericism. Shamanism is about experiencing the physical world as filled with visible and invisible beings of wisdom and power with whom humans may interact if they chose, but to their detriment, often do not. Shamanism is magic in its most powerful, sensual, erotic and illusive sense. However, many modern Hermetic schools have often ignored their shamanic roots, and have removed themselves from a source of important experiences and power. The influence of shamanism on alchemy, and ceremonial practices of goetia, notions of demon and Elemental lovers, folk magic (Brauche and Pow-Wow of the Pennsylvania Germans), Rosicrucianism, and Freemasonic symbols of initiation and resurrection are explored. An extensive set of suggested methods for students of Hermeticism wishing to integrate Shamanism into their practices are provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades our view of Gnosticism has been revolutionized by the discovery of a Coptic Gnostic library at Nag-Hammadi, Egypt. Currently, Gnosticism is seen as a phenomenon extending far beyond Christianity and displaying a strong Platonic influence. The opposition between the two systems was certainly not as sharp as Plotinus claimed. Where, why, and how the ideological lines were drawn is discussed in the light of the new historical evidence.
