Book excerpt: Each of the 4 volumes in this series contains 46 lessons (supplemented with optional visual aid suggestions and drawings) ideal for home devotions or for a year's Sunday School lessons (allowing for special services and anniversaries). All the lessons have an evangelistic emphasis, and at the same time provide a memorable view of all the major events and doctrines of the Bible. They avoid the presentation of Bible narratives as mere 'stories', so that the Word of God speaks powerfully to the young, pressing home the great arguments and appeals of the Gospel. Mrs Jill Masters has supervised the teaching programme of Britain's largest children's Sunday School for thirty years, and has addressed Sunday School teachers' gatherings in the UK, USA, Far East, Australia and South Africa. These volumes have been greeted with enthusiasm by Sunday Schools and parents the world over, having been translated into several major languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Music: An Introduction, Second Edition is a collection of seventeen essays surveying major African American musical genres, both sacred and secular, from slavery to the present. With contributions by leading scholars in the field, the work brings together analyses of African American music based on ethnographic fieldwork, which privileges the voices of the music-makers themselves, woven into a richly textured mosaic of history and culture. At the same time, it incorporates musical treatments that bring clarity to the structural, melodic, and rhythmic characteristics that both distinguish and unify African American music. The second edition has been substantially revised and updated, and includes new essays on African and African American musical continuities, African-derived instrument construction and performance practice, techno, and quartet traditions. Musical transcriptions, photographs, illustrations, and a new audio CD bring the music to life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest volume in the Studies in Antisemitism Series looks at the interaction between nationalism and antisemitism in post-Napoleonic Europe. Using a framework of major historical events for the period 1815-1945, Shmuel Almog traces the radicalization of national ideology in these years and its relationship to the rise of political antisemitism. Nationalism in early nineteenth-century Europe developed originally as a liberal-democratic philosophy in opposition to existing political, social and economic structures. This coincided with a period of increasing integration of the Jewish minority into mainstream European life, particularly in economic spheres. By the 1870s, however, the continued growth of nationalist aspirations, increasingly allied to an imperialist, conservative and militaristic culture, led to a rise in discord between nations and a concomitant increase in the importance of national peculiarities. This was to have a profound effect on the Jewish communities in Europe, with the Jews being viewed as an alien and even dangerous force within the newly-created nation-states. The book argues that growing extremism in nationalist attitudes afforded a suitable ideological and social background for antisemitic activity, as manifested by calls for discriminatory legislation against Jews, the pogroms of Eastern Europe and, ultimately, the Nazi Holocaust. This analysis is substantiated and reinforced by a series of annotated documents and illustrations. This book is a clear account of the development of one of the key elements of antisemitic ideology in this important period of European history.

Containing recipes, photographs and folklore, it is consistently hailed as one of the best books produced about the city. Remarkably, many of the sites and attractions the WPA chronicled in 1938 are still around today.

Book excerpt: A biography of Sternbuch (1905-1971), who was born and raised in Antwerp as the daughter of Rabbi Mordechai Rottenberg, Chief Rabbi of the Orthodox community. Following her marriage to Rabbi Yitzchok Sternbuch, they went to live in St. Gallen, Switzerland. From 1938 their home was open to Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. Recha also set up a rescue network to help Jews cross the border illegally and then go on to other countries. Notes that Saly Mayer, head of the Schweizerischer Israelitischer Gemeindebund, actually hindered the rescue work. In spring 1939, Recha was arrested and imprisoned briefly for aiding illegal immigrants. In 1941 all charges were dropped, since she also helped Jews obtain visas to other countries, which was in the interest of the Swiss officials. The Sternbuchs then began to send food and medical supplies to Jews in the Polish ghettos and to Jewish refugees in Shanghai, setting up the Hilfsverein für Jüdische Flüchtlinge in Shanghai (HIJEFS). After the war, through this organization, they helped survivors in DP camps, saved Jewish children who had been hidden in non-Jewish homes, and provided aid for many rabbis and Jewish scholars who had survived.
