Book excerpt: Excerpt from Research on Strategic Groups: Progress and Prognosis Strategic management is a rapidly developing area of research within the management discipline. Much of it is defined and understood in terms of a general paradigm set out in Schendel and Hofer In addition, it draws upon theoretical concepts from certain relatively-mature disciplines (jemison, 1981a), which have been recognized as having a significant impact on theory development and testing in strategic management. These include: industrial organization (10) economics (porter, organization theory and administrative behavior (jemison, 1981b); marketing (biggadike, and financial theory (bettis, 1983; Duhaime Thomas, 1983; Meyers, Somewhat less frequently, strategy researchers also draw upon concepts and research methodological advances from other disciplines such as sociology, psychology. It is an important book that explores the theme of cognitive strategic groups and draws conclusions on the basis of solid empirical research. The findings of the book cut across a convenient academic concept and in so doing, provides insightful and meaningful elucidations of the realites of managerial cognition. Book Synopsis Hybrid Strategic Groups by : Wayne S. DeSarbo
Download or read book Hybrid Strategic Groups written by Wayne S. DeSarbo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of strategic groups has recently emerged as a critical perspective for uncovering firms' strategic postures/recipes and competitive market structures. Firms within strategic groups generally adopt similar strategic recipes and compete more intensely than firms across strategic groups. Building on recent research, the authors develop the concept of hybrid strategic groups, which blend the strategic recipes of more than one group, in contrast to existing conceptualizations of strategic groups, where either firms tightly follow the recipes of a strategic group (i.e., core firms) or firms loosely follow the recipes of a strategic group (i.e., secondary firms). Thus, competition among firms depends not only on the strategic group but also on the overlap of that strategic group with other strategic groups. The authors devise a combinatorial optimization-based classification procedure utilizing a bilinear model that accommodates multiple variable batteries that can estimate hybrid strategic groups. The proposed methodology is illustrated by using archival data on public banks. For this illustration, the hybrid strategic group solution outperforms ordinary cluster analyses and offers critical insights into the nature of competition among firms.
Book Synopsis Cognition of Competitive Environments: A Strategic Group Analysis by : George Panagiotou
Download or read book Cognition of Competitive Environments: A Strategic Group Analysis written by George Panagiotou and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the concept of strategic groups from a cognitive perspective. The aim of this research study was to identify and examine the differences and similarities of managerial cognitions of competitive environments from a strategic group perspective, by investigating closely two distinctive and different strategic groups; the "Big Four" players in the industry and the Internet-based new entrants. As such, it investigates the effect of such cognitions on strategic group dynamics and evaluates the impact of these managerial perceptions on member firms' structure, competitive behaviour and performance and profitability. In the process of doing so, it discusses the dynamics of competitive landscapes and provides guidance to decision makers of what to do in order to ensure organisational strategic fit and competitive advantage(s). The book is relevant to anyone who wishes to increase their understanding in the area of business strategy and it is particularly useful to decision makers in the context of business.
