Book Synopsis History of the Linotype Company by : Frank J. Romano
Download or read book History of the Linotype Company written by Frank J. Romano and published by RIT Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Victorian era to the start of the twenty-first century, the Mergenthaler Linotype Company dominated the typesetting and printing industries. Unlike previous books which have ended with the invention of the Linotype, Frank Romano tells the rest of the story. This book details the products, the people, and the corporate activities that kept the company ahead of its competition in hot metal, phototypesetting, and pre-press technology. Over ten corporate entities eventually formed the U.S. manufacturer, which ended its corporate life as a division of a German press maker. What began in 1886 ended finally in May 2013, when the Linotype Library division of Monotype Imaging was closed down. After 127 years, the last resting place of the history of the Linotype Company is in this book.

Here her story is told for the first time in a dramatic and deeply moving narrative. Researched by both authors from 1965 to 1971, it was written in a first draft by Iris Wilkinson's friend, Gloria Rawlinson; since Rawlinson's death in 1995 it has been revised and completed by Derek Challis, Wilkinson's son. It includes appalling accounts of hidden pregnancies, harsh experience as a solo mother, dependence on drugs, intimate acquaintance with sexism and poverty, mental breakdown, and a perilous trip to China in wartime. There are deep friendships and hurtful betrayals. Always there is a dedicated and determined commitment to writing. ..."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: In Lancashire the cotton mill dominates many a skyline, even today. Stott & Sons is a unique and fascinating study of one of the most crucial architects? practices working in this field. Over 150 illustrations and gazetteer. spinning town in Britain and architects from Oldham came to dominate the business of designing cotton spinning mils in Lancashire. This book traces the history of Stott & Sons, who were one of the oldest and most prominent firms in the business. Stott, senior, set up an office in Oldham and he was later joined in partnership by two of his sons. They were also involved in the promotion of cotton spinning companies and, as a general architectural practice, designed other buildings including houses, schools and a watch factory. The records of the firm have not survived, but the author has used a variety of sources ranging from Building Regulation records to newspapers and trade journals. Most importantly he has looked at the mills themselves in the belief that industrial archaeology has a major contribution to make in understanding the history of the Lancashire cotton industry.
