Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Linear Reactivity Model (LRM) is a simple nuclear fuel management model that comes with a diskette containing three programs. Consisting of a collection of algorithms and methods, the LRM describes complex core behavior, but it is simpler than the complex programs developed for design calculations. This makes the LRM particularly useful as a teaching tool to explain the basic principles of nuclear fuel management. The LRM mainly focuses on the pressurized water reactor, but it is also directly applicable to the boiling water reactor. Application of the LRM to the CANDU reactor is also covered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A methodology based on the linear reactivity model of core behavior has been developed and employed to evaluate fuel management tactics for improving uranium utilization in Pressurized Water Reactors in a once-through fuel cycle mode on a consistent basis. A major focus has been on the benefit of using burnable poison in conjunction with low-leakage fuel management schemes. Key features in the methodology, such as power weighting of batch reactivity values and correlation of neutron leakage effects with peripheral assembly power, were verified against results generated using detailed state-of the- art computer analyses. A relation between batch power fraction and batch reactivity was derived from a 1/2-group diffusion theory model, and similarly validated. These prescriptions have been used in two ways: to develop analytical models which allow quick scoping calculations; and, programmed into a code, to facilitate more rigorous applications. The methodology has been applied to evaluate fuel management schemes of contemporary interest, such as the use of burnable poison to shape the power history profile, the use of low-leakage fuel loading patterns, and extended cycle length/ burnup, and combinations of these individual schemes. It was found that shaping of the power, history profile in a low-leakage assembly pattern by means of burnable poison, even after accounting for the anticipated residual poison reactivity penalty, has the potential of increasing PWR discharge burnup, and hence uranium utilization by roughly 1%. The overall improvement in uranium utilization for a low-leakage loading over that for the current out-in/scatter scheme, was about 3.6% for current cycle lengths (3-batch, discharge burnup ' 30,000 MWD/MT), and approximately 11.1% for extended cycle operation (3-batch, discharge burnup u 50,000 MWD/MT).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Samuel Glasstone, the senior author of the previous editions of this book, was anxious to live until his ninetieth birthday, but passed away in 1986, a few months short of this milestone. I am grateful for the many years of stimulation received during our association, and in preparing this edition have attempted to maintain his approach. Previous editions of this book were intended to serve as a text for students and a reference for practicing engineers. Emphasis was given to the broad perspective, particularly for topics important to reactor design and oper ation, with basic coverage provided in such supporting areas as neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, and materials. This, the Fourth Edition, was prepared with these same general objectives in mind. However, during the past three decades, the nuclear industry and university educational programs have matured considerably, presenting some challenges in meeting the objec tives of this book. Nuclear power reactors have become much more complex, with an ac companying growth in supporting technology. University programs now offer separate courses covering such basic topics as reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, and materials. Finally, the general availability of inexpensive xv xvi Preface powerful micro-and minicomputers has transformed design and analysis procedures so that sophisticated methods are now commonly used instead of earlier, more approximate approaches.

This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers essential aspects of transmutation technologies, highlighting especially the advances in Japan. The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has caused us to focus attention on a large amount of spent nuclear fuels stored in NPPs. In addition, public anxiety regarding the treatment and disposal of high-level radioactive wastes that require long-term control is growing. The Japanese policy on the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle is still unpredictable in the aftermath of the accident. Therefore, research and development for enhancing the safety of various processes involved in nuclear energy production are being actively pursued worldwide. In particular, nuclear transmutation technology has been drawing significant attention after the accident. This publication is timely with the following highlights: 1) Development of accelerator-driven systems (ADSs), which is a brand-new reactor concept for transmutation of highly radioactive wastes; 2) Nuclear reactor systems from the point of view of the nuclear fuel cycle. How to reduce nuclear wastes or how to treat them including the debris from TEPCO’s Fukushima nuclear power stations is discussed; and 3) Environmental radioactivity, radioactive waste treatment and geological disposal policy. State-of-the-art technologies for overall back-end issues of the nuclear fuel cycle as well as the technologies of transmutation are presented here. The chapter authors are actively involved in the development of ADSs and transmutation-related technologies. The future of the back-end issues in Japan is very uncertain after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP and this book provides an opportunity for readers to consider the future direction of those issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This expanded new edition develops the theory of nuclear reactors from the fundamentals of fission to the operating characteristics of modern reactors. The first half of the book emphasizes reactor criticality analysis and all of the fundamentals that go into modern calculations. Simplified one group diffusion theory models are presented and extended into sophisticated multi-group transport theory models. The second half of the book deals with the two main topics of interest related to operating reactors – reactor kinetics/dynamics, and in-core fuel management. Additional chapters have been added to expand and bring the material up-to-date and include the utilization of more computer codes. Code models and detailed data sets are provided along with example problems making this a useful text for students and researchers wishing to develop an understanding of nuclear power and its implementation in today’s modern energy spectrum. Covers the fundamentals of neutronic analysis for nuclear reactor systems to help understand nuclear reactor theory; Describes the benefits, uses, safety features, and challenges related to implementation of Small Modular Reactors; Provides examples, data sets, and code to assist the reader in obtaining mastery over the subjects.
