Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light Side of Science Carbonic acid gas and its Story - Mechanisms of breathing - Gills and lungs - Their respective functions in fishes. The fact that our chests rise and fall fifteen or sixteen times a minute in the act of respiration or breathing is so familiar that it almost escapes popular recognition through its practically auto matic continuous nature. Breathing is one of those actions, which, while absolutely essential for the maintenance of life, and which, performed for the most part unconsciously, yet lie somewhat under the control of the will. Physiologists call breathing a secondary automatic action, in order to distinguish it from those functions of the body with which we cannot interfere. The duties of digestion, the making of bile, the formation of saliva, the flow of tears, the expansion or contraction of the blood vessels - are acts which proceed independently of our will and consciousness, and they are undoubtedly performed all the more perfectly in that we have no need to concern ourselves about them at all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Light This book is intended as a companion to that on Radiation previously published in this same series, and the first three chapters in that book should be read before commencing this. Light plays such an important part in the life of man that it is only natural that speculation as to its nature and investigation of its laws should have begun very early. But although this is true, yet the ancients seem to have been exceedingly slow in the invention and construction of optical instruments, and to have been completely innocent of any reasonable optical theory. All the refinements both of construction and theory have happened well within the last three centuries. Metallic mirrors are, of course, very ancient. Many of them have been recovered from ancient Egyptian tombs, and they are very distinctly mentioned in the books of Exodus and Job. Burning-glasses in the form of globes of water or of glass were also known at a very early time, Aristophanes mentioning them in a comedy of his which was performed in 424 B.C. The most reasonable of the early theories was also one of the very earliest. Pythagoras, who died somewhere about 520 B.C., considered the sensation of sight to be caused by particles continuously shot out from luminous surfaces and entering the pupil of the eye. This is exactly the theory which Newton developed so brilliantly over 2000 years later, but the other theories were very fantastic and meaningless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Side-Lights on Astronomy and Kindred Fields of Popular Science A prominent theme in the collection is that of the structure, extent, and duration of the universe. Here some repetition of ideas was found unavoidable, in a case where What is substantially a single theme has been treated in the various forms Which it as sumed in the light of constantly growing knowledge. If the critical reader finds this a defect, the author can plead in extenuation only the difficulty of avoid ing it under the circumstances. Although mainly astronomical, a number of discussions relating to general scientific subjects have been included. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder Book of Light Light, though one of the most difficult of all the natural forces to explain thoroughly, contains Within it so many wonders that it can be made attractive to young and old alike. The author has not hesitated, in either this or the other Wonder Books, to employ freely a few of the old, old fairy stories for illustrating some especially difficult point. It is his experience in the teaching of the natural sciences to the young, that the more unusual or out-of-the-way the illustrations employed, the greater the chance of their producing a marked effect on the mind. Book excerpt: This text introduces a logical theory of photographers lighting - one that teaches beginning photographics to predict results before setting up lights. This is not primarily a how-to book with only set examples for photographers to follow. Rather, it provides the reader with a comprehensive theory of the nature and principles of light to allow individual photographers to use lighting to express their own creativity. Numerous photographs and illustrations provide clear examples of the theories delineated within the text, while sidebars highlight special lighting questions.

The astronomer not only weighs and measures these distant worlds, but he even tests their chemical composition almost as definitely as if he held some of their substance in his hand. And the chemicals that he tests are located so many billions of miles away that the mere figures that record their distance seem meaningless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Notes on Light If the importance of having good notes is once accepted, the question then arises as to the form that they should take. Should they be written or printed notes? For a good many years notes on Physics were dictated to the boys at Gresham's School. It was found, however, that this took up a considerable amount of valuable time, which could be saved by having the notes printed and copies supplied to the boys. The result has been a gain of fifty per cent. In the amount of ground covered. At the same time it has been found that the subject matter has been acquired by the boys just as well as through the dictated notes, perhaps even better. Volumes could be written on the evolutionary side of the problem and the structure and uses of luminous organs. These questions can only be touched upon. Neither is it my purpose to discuss the ultimate cause of the light, whether due to vibration Of electrons or to other causes. That problem must be left to the physicist, although it is highly probable that a study of animal light will give important information regarding the nature of light in general, and no theory of light can be adequate which fails to take into account the extraordi nary powers Of luminous animals. A good knowledge of elementary mathematics is assumed. The calculus is used, but I hope that the results Obtained by its aid will be intelligible to those who cannot follow the inter mediate steps, and in any case the greater part of the book is free from it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Science And, indeed, we are led back by psychology to approach logic, physics, and the other sciences we have traced, from a new standpoint. Psychology gives us insight into the theory of knowledge, and leads us critically to examine how it is that we know anything, either by logic or by the senses, or by that fertile union of thawo - which breeds science. Thus, by the road of psychology, we return once more to our starting-point, ready to study fundamental, logical, mechanical, and physical ideas from a. Critical point of view. We shall do well, then, to bend our spectrum round so that the violet theory of knowledge, which lies beyond the blue of psychology, shall be brought near to the purple of logic, where fundamental scientific10 the foundations OF science ideas take their rise and pass into the red of definite physics. We should always be teaching a pupil what he needs and what he can use and a general science course well taught fulfils this ideal admirably. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Light for Students This book has been written to meet the requirements of students who wish to obtain an accurate and comprehensive knowledge of Geometrical and Physical Optics. In many instances results of recent researches are described, in connection with important laws which they elucidate. The mathematical investigations have, in all cases, been rendered as simple as possible, and have been developed so as to direct attention to the physical aspect of the subject. No knowledge of the Calculus is assumed on the part of the student. A number of illustrative experiments which may readily be performed are fully described, and numerous questions, mostly selected from public examination papers, are appended. The first ten chapters are devoted to Geometrical Optics, i.e., to explaining the consequences of the laws of Reflection and Refraction of Light. Some of the most important optical instruments, including the eye, are dealt with. Points which commonly present difficulties to students, such, for example, as the method of achromatising an eye-piece, are explained in considerable detail. The remaining ten chapters are devoted to the development of the Wave Theory of Light. While ample attention is devoted to the more elementary parts of the subject, full explanations are also given of many points not usually dealt with in books of similar scope; as instances, the investigation of the velocity of transverse waves in an elastic solid, and Sellmeier's Theory of Dispersion, may be mentioned.
