Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume features essays written in honor of Ernst Mach. It explores his life, work, and legacy. Readers will gain a better understanding of this natural scientist and scholar who made major contributions to physics, the philosophy of science, and physiological psychology. The essays offer a critical inventory of Mach’s lifework in line with state-of-the-art research and historiography. It begins with physics, where he paved the way for Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. The account continues with Mach's contributions in biology, psychology, and physiology pioneering with an empiricist and gestalthaft Analysis of Sensations. Readers will also discover how in the philosophy of science he served as a model for the Vienna Circle with the Ernst Mach Society as well as paved the way for an integrated history and theory of science. Indeed, his influence extends far beyond the natural sciences -- to the Vienna Medical School and psychoanalysis (R. Bárány, J. Breuer, S. Freud), to literature (Jung Wien, R. Musil), to politics (F. Adler, Austro-Marxism and the Viennese adult education), to arts between Futurism and Minimal Art as well as to social sciences between the liberal school (J. Schumpeter, F. A. von Hayek) and empirical social research (P. Lazarsfeld und M. Jahoda).

Book excerpt: Many people live as if life were just a series of disconnected events, containing no real meaning and offering no real fulfillment. But you can find satisfaction in life -- if you're willing to change your perspective and take action. That's what this book is designed to help you do! In these pages, you'll learn to live a deeper, richer, more rewarding life. Not a life of random events, occurring to seemingly- disconnected people, but a life in which you are deeply important and involved. A life that will give you joy, meaning and purpose -- every moment of every day. The LifeWork Principle is an action-oriented approach, not another "pie-in-the-sky" theory. Somehow you know instinctively that there's more to life than just your physical existence. But how do you discover it? How can you fill that gnawing emptiness inside? How can you move from listlessness and confusion to joy and satisfaction? This book will point you in the right direction. The LifeWork Principle will help you develop a new perspective on life, and show you how to live each week, each day - each hour! - to its fullest. You'll start to see your life as a unique and unrepeatable role created just for you. And you'll begin to experience true joy, real fulfillment and deep satisfaction like you never thought was possible.

Book excerpt: Billy Apple (born Barrie Bates in Auckland, 1935) is New Zealand's most internationally significant living artist and a pioneer of pop and conceptual art. At the Royal College of Art in London from 1959&–62, Apple studied with key contemporaries &– notably David Hockney &– and staged one of the earliest solo exhibitions in the new &‘pop' art after changing his name, in 1962, to &‘Billy Apple'. In 1964 he moved to New York. There, he worked as an art director, developed his art, exhibited extensively with leading artists (notably in the 1964 American Supermarket exhibition with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and others), and established one of the first alternative art spaces &– &‘Apple' &– which hosted some of the new ephemeral activities that enlivened the New York scene in the 1970s. He returned to live in New Zealand in 1990 where he continues to produce his particular brand of conceptual art. Apple's work is held in permanent collections from the Tate to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.This is the first substantial book on Billy Apple's career. Based on over a decade of research all over the world and unprecedented access to Apple's own archive, Billy Apple&®: Life/Work chronicles an extraordinary sixty-year career and the art scenes that have sustained it in London, New York and Auckland. The book includes more than 200 illustrations in colour, with a generous selection of reproductions of Apple's works as well as other illustrative material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a series of personal recollections concerning the life and work of a leading American–Israeli environmental and agricultural scientist, whose wide-ranging personal and professional experiences span eight decades and some 40 countries around the world. It recalls a family's journey in 1932 from California to Palestine, and the events that led to his taking part in the establishment of the first modern settlement in the highlands of the Negev Desert (later joined by ex-Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion), and helping to innovate and apply efficient methods of soil and water management in irrigated and rain-fed farming. Over the years, Daniel Hillel has taught hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students at major universities in Israel and the US, authored over 200 original research papers and ten definitive textbooks that have been translated and published in several languages, initiated and edited eight multi-author books (including the Encyclopedia of Soils in the Environment), and served on advisory and research missions (sponsored by UN's FAO, IAEA, USAID, Canada's IDRC, and Germany's ZEF) to some 40 countries in Asia, Africa, South America and Australasia, and was environment and irrigation advisor to the World Bank. He has helped initiate and conduct research at NASA/Goddard Institute and Columbia University on the potential impacts of climate change on regional and global food production. Dr Hillel's life-long goal is to enhance the application of science toward the efficient and environmentally sound development of human, biotic, land, and water resources. For his multiple contributions to the science and the practice of enhanced and sustainable food production, Dr Hillel was awarded the World Food Prize in 2012.
