Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Words of Christ, Vol. 2 The final "call" addressed to Peter and his brother and to James and John, at the Lake of Galilee, apparently insignificant as an event, proved to have been, in reality, one of the turning points in the history of the world. The "call" of Abraham had given the world, as an everlasting inheritance, the grand truth of a Living Personal God; that of Moses had created a nation, in which the active government of human affairs by one God was to be illustrated, and His will made known directly to mankind; but that of the poor Galilæan fishermen was the foundation of a society, for which all that had preceded it was only the preparation; a society in which all that was merely outward and temporary in the relations of God to man, should be laid aside, and all that was imperfect and material replaced by the perfect, spiritual, and abiding. The true theocracy, towards which mankind had been slowly advancing, through ages, had received its first overt establishment, when Peter heard, on his knees, the summons of Jesus to follow Him, and had, with the others, at once, from the heart, obeyed. Henceforth, it only remained to extend the kingdom thus founded, by winning the consciences of men to the same devotion, by the announcement of the Fatherhood of God; the need of seeking His favour by repentance; and faith in His divine Son, leading to a holy life, of which that of Jesus, as the Saviour-Messiah, was the realized ideal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Christ, Vol. 2: Close of the Ministry, and Passion Week Morning has dawned upon the mountain-top which had witnessed the wonderful night-scene of the transfiguration. Jesus and the three disciples begin to descend. The silence they at first observe is broken by our Lord turning to his disciples and saying, "Tell the vision to no man until the Son of man be risen again from the dead." A few days before, Jesus had straitly charged them that they should tell no man that he was the Christ. The discovery would be premature. The people were not prepared for it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Words of the Lord Jesus, Vol. 2 Thus the Lord is here speaking to His Apostles great words, far-reaching in their meaning; and He speaks them prophetically, even as His Spirit had formerly spoken in the prophets. The progress of His internal contemplation assumes here as every where the form of a perspective view. The present and the immediate are to Him the type of the more remote. In sending forth these, He contemplates all later missions of these Apostles and their successors. The words which He now speaks to the Twelve in such a manner that their literal meaning can only apply to their present object, contain, in their spiritual meaning, truths applicable to their whole future apostolical course. But from this typical starting-point the thoughts and their expression rise more loftily and more freely into words, which they scarcely understand at the time, much less use and follow out, but which must at least have awakened within them the conscious expecta tion of extended developments to Spring from them, and which are given to them now in order that the Spirit in His time may recall and interpret them to their minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 2 of 4: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels While Jesus was fighting in the wilderness with the temptation which met Him under the form of the distorted Messianic hopes of His age, and in this victorious conflict developed the course of His Messianic work, the same hopes induced the Sanhedrim at Jerusalem to send a deputation to John the Baptist. John had made a powerful impression, not only on the people in general, but also on their leaders, the Pharisees, many of whom, as we have already noticed, were so carried away by the popular enthusiasm as to submit to his baptism. Gradually a more distinct judgment had been formed in the Sanhedrim respecting the unquestionable importance of so extraordinary a theocratic undertaking. They had arrived at the conviction, that a man who, on good grounds, could venture to subject the nation to such a purification, which implied a previous excommunication, must be either the Messiah Himself, or one of His forerunners who was announced as Elias by the prophets, or the prophet promised by Moses (Deut. xviii. 15; John i. 25). But if the Baptist by his course of action, set forth such extraordinary claims, it was an official duty on the part of the Sanhedrim to take cognizance of it. and to come to a clear understanding with him. Accordingly this body resolved on sending a deputation to him, which consisted, as a matter of course, of priests and Levites. To the priests was entrusted the sanctioning of religious purification, which included the observance of the laws relative to ablutions, so that those who were sent on this occasion might be regarded as duly qualified commissioners. Book excerpt: One of four books in the ILLUSTRATED BIBLE SUMMARY series, The Life and Teachings of Jesus draws on the four Gospels to provide a single narrative of Jesus' life and teachings. For the pastor or Bible teacher it serves as a concise summary that can be consulted and readily accessed for preaching and teaching from one of the Gospels or on a topic addressed in Jesus' teachings. The Life and Teachings of Jesus begins the prologue to John's Gospel who tells of the Word who was with God and was God. It moves through the announcement of Jesus' birth to the climactic events of his crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension to the Father. The book is colorfully illustrated and uses a number of icons to call attention to recurring features that are helpful in grasping the wonder of this One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Book excerpt: Widely proclaimed a classic work of Christian faith, Life of Christ has been hailed as the most eloquent of Fulton J. Sheen's many books. The fruit of many years of reflection, prayer, and research, it is a dramatic and moving recounting of the birth, life, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Christ, and a passionate portrait of the God-Man, the teacher, the healer, and, most of all, the Savior, whose promise has sustained humanity for two millenia. With his customary insight and reverence, Sheen interprets the Scripture and describes Christ not only in historical perspective but also in exciting and contemporary terms -- seeing in Christ's life both modern parallels and timeless lessons. His thoughtful, probing analysis provides new insight into well-known Gospel events. An appealing blend of philosophy, history, and biblical exegesis, from the best-known and most-loved American Catholic leader of the twentieth century, Life of Christ has long been a source of inspiration and guidance. For those seeking to better understand the message of Jesus Christ, this vivid retelling of the greatest story ever lived is a must-read.

The more general portion is preparatory and figurative the more special is then drawn out in detail and in plain expressions. The former sets out with the paradoxical and awakening testimony There is a water of life! And this is the true gift of God through Me 1 We must observe here the point of connection, and the transition. The connection is with the present, earthly gift of God, the water which supplies the figure. Ver. 7. (first turning - point - the woman becomes attentive to the speaker, and enters into conversation with Him.) Then follows the transition to the true or spiritual gift of God the same in its source, contrasted in its worth not without allusion to the end of the whole colloquy He Himself who was speaking 1 (second turning-point: the woman does not under stand, and opposes.) Then follows a plain designation, though as yet in figurative, preparatory words, of the spiritual gift; and its worth is shown in relation to the permanence of its satisfac tion, vers. 13, 14. There is first another antithesis - He who drinketh this water shall never thirst: then comes the plain declaration - Springing up into everlasting life! (third turning point: the woman begins to understand, but her notion being obscure, she can only speak evasively.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Words of the Lord Jesus, Vol. 7 IT has been found necessary, on account of its disproportion ate bulk, to divide the last volume of the first edition of this work. The question may be asked, why I have not rather retrenched and curtailed it; and my reply is, that I did not think myself justified in dealing thus with a book which already belongs to the public, and has been blessed to the public good: - that the words of the Passion and the Resurrection demand the most careful and elaborate treatment, being of all our Lord's discourses the most weighty, the most profound, and the most unlimited in their consequences; - and, moreover, that they involve more than ordinary exposition of the historical narrative with which they are so wonderfully interwoven. As to the most diffuse of the treatises contained in these volumes - those on Baptism and the Lord's Supper - the necess1ty of our own times has required that they should be rather enlarged than compressed. May the Lord Open for this exposition of His word, based upon a penetrating contemplation of His life, a still more ex tended path Of usefulness and blessing! May it especially be the means Of convincing many that the abstract principle of an authoritative Scripture, even without the strict obligations of Confessions, can Offer something positive enough for a genuine faith in Christ; and of proving to others that even. A more rigorous idea of inspiration may be consistently and intelligently carried out into the details of interpretation, to the satisfaction of every reasonable mind.
