In order to supply this deficiency, he undertook, more than ten years ago, a translation of the Life of the Saint from the Italian; but various circumstances occurred to retard its completion. In the meanwhile, he learned with pleasure that such a publication was announced in England, in the series of the Lives of the Saints edited by the fathers of the Oratory; but this work, when it came to hand, though it left nothing to be desired in point of fulness of illustration, did not seem fully adapted to meet the object he had proposed to himself, as its length was so great as to prove an obstacle to its general circulation. As soon, therefore, as his occupations permitted, he resumed his undertaking; but thinking that a compilation from the English Life would answer his purpose better than the proposed translation, he was induced to change his original plan, and to prepare for publication the work which is now presented.
