D, Vol. 1 of 4: Comprehending an Account of His Studies and Numerous Works, in Chronological Order IN 1764 Johnson, aged fifty-five, wrote to Reynolds, who was then recovering from a severe illness, If I should lose you, I should lose almost the only man whom I call a friend. Johnson's kind heart and social temper surrounded him with the friendliest acquaintanceships. His uncouth ways, that had their origin in an inherited taint of the blood, his delight in intellec tual wrestle, and his eager overbearing roar of argument, concealed from none who came near to him the tenderness that his own hard struggles had provoked only to helpful pity for the sufferings of others, the manly fidelity, the faith in God that, more than any other feature of his character, maintained to the last a sound mind in an unsound body. But there was hardly any man but Reynolds towards whom Johnson's ready good will went out, without any disturbing under thought, as equal brotherhood of friendship. His love for his old pupil, David Garrick, was touched by imperfect sympathy with Garrick's calling as a player; with young Boswell, to whom he was an oracle, such equal brotherhood was, of course, impossible. For Goldsmith J ohnson's friendship was more fatherly; and among other men with whom he had close ties of affection, it was Reynolds, almost alone, from whom he had nothing to take, and to whom he had nothing to give, but friendship. Reynolds also he could regard as intellectually his equal, and his strength was in an art outside the pale of J ohnson's rivalry.
