Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Pius IX: Down to the Episcopal Jubilee of 1877 It became thenceforth a passion with the author to read every thing that could throw light on the state of Italy, and enable him to trace out the causes of the chronic discontent and unrest to which her populations were a prey, breaking out, as they did, periodically, into sanguinary violence and the fierce manifestations of a spirit so anti Catholic, so anti-christian, so unholy, that it seemed unaccountable to most people, while by others it was asserted to be the natural growth of a soil cursed by priestly government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular Life of Our Holy Father Pope Pius the Ninth: Drawn From the Most Reliable Authorities "The Supreme Power in the Church," says the Council of Trent; "the full power of supporting, ruling, and governing the universal Church," says the Council of Florence, "resides by divine right in the Pontiff of Rome, who, in quality of the successor of the blessed apostle Peter, is the true Vicar of Jesus Christ, the visible Head of the whole Church, the common Father and Teacher of all Christians." To aid him in the discharge of his manifold and onerous duties, the Roman Pontiff has his venerable brethren in the Episcopacy; for they too are divinely appointed to govern and teach in particular churches, though in subordination to the Supreme Head, whose sole right and privilege it is to convoke them in Council, to preside over them personally, or by his legates, in their deliberations, and to confirm their decrees. Subordinate to the bishops, are the priests, the deacons, and other ministers, who have the more immediate care of the faithful. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of Pope Pius IX: A Tribute of Esteem and Love to the Memory of the Saintly and Glorious Pontiff In the year 1871, a song of triumph, praise and thanksgiving - a new song, such as had never been heard by men - was first chanted in the central city of Christendom. Its tones were quickly caught by ears expectant and repeated by joyous throats; and, swelling in their march, they soon resounded in one grand chorus of over two hundred millions to the very confines of earth, hushing all other sounds and filling the rest of creation with awe, surprise and admiration. We may even devoutly and reasonably imagine the angelic choirs in suspense, in wonder and complacence stooping to drink in the novel strains and then re echoing them throughout the celestial realms - And what, pray, was the burden of this new song? The goodness and mercy and providence of God for us His earthly children, as shown in an extraordinary manner in His Vicar and our Supreme Head on earth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Life of Pius the Ninth And it is impossible to doubt that such a bit of autobiography would be extremely interesting. In certain respects, it might also be historically valuable. And, as regards the outer world, it is only the future historian who is at all likely to profit by it. It is hardly to be supposed that any such production will be made public during the lifetime of the present generation. As regards the present volumes, it will be seen that the object of the writer has been to give an account of the public rather than of the private life of Pius the Ninth; and to set forth the character of the man in accordance with the light thrown upon it by his public conduct, and with reference to such portions of it as have been influential in making that conduct what it has been. It has seemed to the writer that this is what it mainly imports the world to know. But it would be disengenuous to affect, that such an opinion has been the only reason why the more private and intimate details, with which a biographer may be expected to gratify the curiosity of his readers, have been withheld. They have been withheld because the present writer has no means of giving such with a consciousness of their truth and authenticity. Very few persons have such means at their disposition. CHAPTER IV. The Civil Affairs Of Eome.--Italy In A FerMent.--The Fundamental Statute.--The Italian War Against Austria.--Defeat Of Charles Albert.--Change Of MinisTry.--Violence Of The Kevolutionists Against The Pope.--The Church In EusSia.--Spain.--France. The position of Pius IX. as a sovereign at last became critical. The vast combination against authority and against Catholic truth was then in full operation throughout Europe. The Catholic Swiss formed the Sonderbund, to save, if possible, their ancient religious liberty; elsewhere the revolutionary party sought the overthrow of existing governments. In Italy, and especially at Rome, these men, after pledging their words at the time of the amnesty, were plotting to destroy alike the temporal power of the Holy See, and the Church. Mazzini and his accomplices had, while praising the liberal concessions of Pius IX. to the popular feeling, stimulated the masses to new and exorbitant demands. Almost simultaneously an insurrection at Palermo spread over the kingdom of the two Sicilies, and extorted from the king a constitution; Austria and Prussia were convulsed by similar movements. In France the Revolution rose against its own work, and weary of the constitutional monarchy established in 1830, now rejected the house of Orleans, as it then rejected the elder branch of Bourbon, and proclaimed a republic.
