Should the reader wish to see an account drawn from ancient and com paratively unknown sources, respecting the history, language, and literature of the genuine Gauls, a race cognate with the ancient Britons, he may find something worth his attention in the works of the Author, which are entitled Gomer, Parts I. Book excerpt: This “captivating biography” of the great Roman general “puts Caesar’s war exploits on full display, along with his literary genius” and more (The New York Times) Tracing the extraordinary trajectory of the Julius Caesar’s life, Adrian Goldsworthy not only chronicles his accomplishments as charismatic orator, conquering general, and powerful dictator but also lesser-known chapters during which he was high priest of an exotic cult and captive of pirates, and rebel condemned by his own country. Goldsworthy also reveals much about Caesar’s intimate life, as husband and father, and as seducer not only of Cleopatra but also of the wives of his two main political rivals. This landmark biography examines Caesar in all of these roles and places its subject firmly within the context of Roman society in the first century B.C. Goldsworthy realizes the full complexity of Caesar’s character and shows why his political and military leadership continues to resonate thousands of years later.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Julius Cæsar, Vol. 1 When extraordinary facts attest an eminent genius, what is more contrary to good sense than to ascribe to him all the passions and'sentiments of mediocrity? What more erroneous than not to recognise the pre eminence of those privileged beings who appear in history from time to time like luminous beacons, dis Sipating the darkness of their epoch, and throwing light into the future? To deny this preeminence would, indeed, be to'insult humanity, by believing it capable of submitting, long and voluntarily, to a dom ination which did not rest on true greatness and in contestable' utility. Let us be logical, and we shall be just. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: What actions are justified when the fate of a nation hangs in the balance, and who can see the best path ahead? Julius Caesar has led Rome successfully in the war against Pompey and returns celebrated and beloved by the people. Yet in the senate fears intensify that his power may become supreme and threaten the welfare of the republic. A plot for his murder is hatched by Caius Cassius who persuades Marcus Brutus to support him. Though Brutus has doubts, he joins Cassius and helps organize a group of conspirators that assassinate Caesar on the Ides of March. But, what is the cost to a nation now erupting into civil war? A fascinating study of political power, the consequences of actions, the meaning of loyalty and the false motives that guide the actions of men, Julius Caesar is action packed theater at its finest.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespere's Tragedy of Julius Caesar The text of this edition of Julius Caesar follows that of the First Folio as closely as seemed practicable. The few changes introduced, apart from those universally adopted, are mentioned in the Notes; but it is obviously inconsistent with the purposes of the edition to include any discussion of textual difficulties. In general, the Introduction and Notes are designed to furnish the material necessary for the intelligent appreciation of the play by the student, but not to make excursions into the many interesting fields constantly opened to view. In the preparation of the Notes Mr. Aldis Wright's edition of Julius Caesar was used so freely and gratefully as to deserve particular mention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Julius Caesar and the Foundation of the Roman Imperial System A word is needed about the busts of Cesar of which illustrations appear in this volume. One of these illustrations (p. 78) most probably does not represent Caesar, but some other poniz'fex maxz'mus but it is included in this volume by the particular desire of Mr. G. H. Putnam. The very striking basalt bust in the Berlin Museum is omitted as being somewhat doubtful; though I have the opinion of at least one excellent authority in favour of including it among the genuine busts. The two which are most generally recognised as genuine as well as good works of art, are the well-known busts in the British Museum (p. 18) and at Naples (p. The latter rep resenting a younger man than the former. These two at least present one or two peculiarities of feat ure visible also on the coin, which are the only cer tain contemporary representations of Czesar's face. The very beautiful gem which we have attempted to reproduce (p. 92) may however also be of sar's own time this is in the British Museum, and I have to thank my friend Professor Gardner for drawing my attention to it.
