Book Synopsis The Art of Tracey Emin by : Mandy Merck
Download or read book The Art of Tracey Emin written by Mandy Merck and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The career of Tracey Emin, one of the best-known contemporary British artists, has become a potent symbol of the relationship between art and celebrity in our time. When it was exhibited in London at the Tate in 1999, her now notorious installation "My Bed" was denounced by conservative critics as a national scandal, but this and her other work have continued to attract ever larger audiences. Whether storming drunkenly out of live television debates, talking tearfully about her abortions, or modeling evening gowns for Vivienne Westwood, Tracey Emin makes headlines. Yet if Emin is now universally recognized as a media phenomenon, her work has also begun to attract serious critical attention. In The Art of Tracey Emin, distinguished critics from Britain and the United States address her achievement in depth for the first time, tracing Emin's influences from Egon Schiele to Judy Chicago and establishing her place in a larger tradition of postmodern and feminist art. Adopting a variety of critical approaches, contributors explore the full range of Emin's work, from photography and monoprints to installation art and videos, showing that, however raw and personal it may seem to be, it actually represents a carefully meditated response to vital issues in contemporary culture and society.
Download or read book Strangeland written by Tracey Emin and published by Sceptre. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intimate memoirs of one of the most acclaimed and controversial artists of her generation. Here I am, a fucked, crazy, anorexic-alcoholic-childless, beautiful woman. I never dreamt it would be like this. 'Frequently affecting...intriguing, almost incantatory' Telegraph Tracey Emin's Strangeland is her own space, lying between the Margate of her childhood, the Turkey of her forefathers and her own, private-public life in present-day London. Her writings, a combination of memoirs and confessions, are deeply intimate, yet powerfully engaging. Tracey retains a profoundly romantic world view, paired with an uncompromising honesty. Her capacity both to create controversies and to strike chords is unequalled in British life. A remarkable book - and an original, beautiful mind. 'As spare and poignant as one of Emin's line drawings' Marie Claire

Book Synopsis Preserving New York by : Anthony Wood
Download or read book Preserving New York written by Anthony Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preserving New York is the largely unknown inspiring story of the origins of New York City’s nationally acclaimed landmarks law. The decades of struggle behind the law, its intellectual origins, the men and women who fought for it, the forces that shaped it, and the buildings lost and saved on the way to its ultimate passage, span from 1913 to 1965. Intended for the interested public as well as students of New York City history, architecture, and preservation itself, over 100 illustrations help reveal a history richer and more complex than the accepted myth that the landmarks law sprang from the wreckage of the great Pennsylvania Station. Images include those by noted historic photographers as well as those from newspaper accounts of the time. Forgotten civic leaders such as Albert S. Bard and lost buildings including the Brokaw Mansions, are unveiled in an extensively researched narrative bringing this essential episode in New York’s history to future generations tasked with protecting the city’s landmarks. For the first time, the story of how New York won the right to protect its treasured buildings, neighborhoods and special places is brought together to enjoy, inform, and inspire all who love New York.
