It presents the involved course of the trial in as clear a light and brief a compass as could probably be otherwise secured, and tells the story of the sufferings of Ridley and Lati mer with a vividness and pathos which have given the passage a distinguished place in English literature. The space which these extracts occupy is large, but it was deemed a better service to the historical purpose of the volume, to sacrifice, in part, its claims to originality, rather than weaken the effect of a contemporary record by a modern paraphrase. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hugh Latimer It is difficult to write a life of any of the more important personages of the English Reformation; it is difficult to write without prejudice, and the documents of the last part of the reign of Henry VIII. and of the reign of Edward VI. have not yet been calendared. We have endeavoured to give a brief account of Latimer's life and doings, without attempting to deal in detail with the great critical and controversial questions of the time; some will, no doubt, think this improper, but we should like to point out that Latimer's position in English History is not of the kind to make a life of him a convenient starting point for a discussion of the complicated circumstances of those times. We have to express our obligations to Canon Dixon's History of the Church of England in the Time of the Reformation, especially for the reign of Edward VI. and Queen Mary. The references to the State Papers are to the "Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic," of the reign of Henry VIII. References to Latimer's Sermons and Remains are to the two volumes in the Parker Society's publications. References to Strype's Memorials are to the edition of the Clarendon Press, 1822, and to Strype's Cranmer, Clarendon Press, 1812. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Sermons and Letters of Dr. Hugh Latimer, Bishop of Worcester and Martyr, 1555 That princely prophet David describing the perverse nature and wicked properties of the ungodly and reprobates, amongst other crimes whereof he doth accuse them, he layeth also to their charge, that they have not called upon God. By the which words, he doth manifestly teach, that they which do not give themselves to true and faithful prayer, and invocating of the name of God, are in the number of those which do say in their hearts there is no God. For as the godly, by their earnest and continual praying and praising of the name of God, do declare the reverend fear they bear towards his divine majesty, and their unfeigned love, the which is grafted in their hearts by the gracious and divine Spirit, towards their heavenly and most loving Father, by the which they are encouraged willingly and cheerfully to walk in the way of godliness, and to frame their lives to the will and pleasure of him whom they fear and love: So, on the contrary side, the ungodly in that they do not call upon their God, neither praise him, most evidently declare that they stand not in awe of him, nor love him, but rather despise him as one that is neither able to hurt or pleasure them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hugh Latimer: A Biography He has at all events sedulously availed himself of such materials for his work as were within his reach. His aim has been, if possible, to look at Latimer as his contemporaries saw him; and, setting aside modern fanciful portraits, to reproduce, as far as may be, the very authentic image of the man as he spoke, and acted, and suffered, three centuries ago. Modern authorities, therefore, friendly or unfriendly, have been very little consulted; the narrative has been compiled almost exclusively, in its framework, and in its details, from contemporary documents. Latimer's published writings are rich in autobiographical allusions; a considerable number of his letters have been preserved among the Chapter House Papers in the State Paper Office; in the same invaluable repository, and among the Mss. in the British Museum, many documents have been found which throw much light upon his career; and the works of his contemporaries, especially of his great associates, Ridley and Cranmer, contain frequent references to one who for many years played so important a part in the transactions of the time.
